  • A bike for Petrol Prices

    Hi all,

I am looking to buy a bike in the next one or two months. Here are my requirements.

    1. Easy handling in city traffic and comfortable on highways (Bangalore traffic.)
    2. Can cruise at 90 - 100 for extended times (Not bothered about the top speed though)
    3. No Pulsar (No offences but everyone has one!)
    4. Visit to service station only for periodic service

I am 6 foot 2 and 75 kg. I have a Discover 125 2004 model at my home town in Tamil Nadu. Here I ride my brother's Pulsar 150.

Almost all the bikes satisfy the fourth one. As for the other requirements, there are a lot of bikes. Me being attracted to technology found R15 to be impressive. People told me I ll get adjusted to the riding position soon and then it ll be very comfortable. I took my friend's R15 for a spin and I felt pretty comfortable. So finally decided to get it but then came the shocker. Petrol prices up by Rs. 5.

This made me add one more requirement and that is fuel efficiency of at least 45 in the highways at near three digit speeds. I am not sure how much more the petrol prices will increase but this is really worrying.

What bikes fit the requirements now?
As far as I know, a Pulsar 135, Joeled R15 and Suzuki GS150R. Bringing my Discover is also possible but that is very uncomfortable right from 80kph.

    Suggestions please guys.

And oh, sorry for setting a question paper instead of asking a question

pulsar 135 despite saying no pulsars. you're contradicting :P
only joeled R15 and GS150 can give you that much mileage and yet be comfortable at 3 digit speeds. But the GS150 is heavy and has larger turning radius. pretty uncomfortable in city conditions. get an R15 and get it joeled

The GS150 and R15 are two completely different animals. You'll feel a lot more relaxed on a GS. The R15's stance is sporty.

The CBZ hits a sweet spot with good performance, city handling, highway poise, fuel efficiency, trouble-free maintenance and easy serviceability. The RTR can cross 100, so consider it if speed is important. The Karizma R goes faster, turns more lazily, is more stable (wheelbase) and is more thirsty.

I am not recommending the P135 considering that you already ride a 125 cc bike.

Get the R15, its the only bike in India at this price point, to have a sensible ECU which has no issues reported on yet.

As far as my knowledge if you place the bike within 7K rpm it will for sure deliver a decent mileage of >40Kms. So ideally you get a super smooth cruising experience at 90-100Kph in top gear.

May be others can do the same, but I would say R15 is more reliable on mileage figures due to its ECU. Also the smooth cruising experience with amazing handling is not worth comparing to any bike priced below the R15.

Just test ride an R15 at 90-100Kph you will be more confident in flicking the bike unlike any other. I have seen many cribbing on Back pain issues with R15, its all mere Bullsh*t. If you are fit enough and regular with your workouts, for sure there is nothing going to stop your heavenly biking experience.

Also "Joeling" is another main reason for choosing an R15, you can keep it stock as far as you can and when you starve for more performance, No need to replace the bike, just replace a few parts from Joel, like the 165 block, ECU, FFE etc that should take care.

Only one bike can satisfy your need here is Suzuki GS150R. Top class in 150 CC commuter segment, amazing mileage, 6 gears, very comfortable at high speeds all thanks to Engine Balancer Technology and its weight, super smooth engine, comfortable riding position. Other GS150R owners can certainly put some light on it.

Please do take test ride of it, also you can consider Dazzler but you being 6 foot 2, I guess Dazzler will be short for you, but still you can test ride it.

Hunk and New reformed 2011 CBZ Extreme are also at your disposal to take a test ride.

            Cheers!

RTR 160 is the bike which can do all of that in stock form.
RTR 160 is the MOST FUEL EFFICIENT bike in India when cruising at a constant 100kmph on speedo. At that time, it will easily return 45 kmpl. (Personal experience)
Top-End is a decent 125kmph alongwith good low-end pull. The perfect city bike.
RTR 160 also is a very fun bike to ride anywhere in India. I know you have a much bigger budget, but this is what I felt I should suggest (since nobody else is).

The only issue is that of your height, it WILL feel small under you, but that is a non issue because so will the R15. Do take a test ride before deciding.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

@Eliksir: Bro I just said P135 can do that. But I will not get it anyway

@HarishK, shv18, RhythmRana99: Thanks guys, I ll get an R15 and try it at high speeds. Can I fit the ECU from Joel after some 5K - 6K on the stock engine and remap it later when needed? Big bore can come later.

@lsp2310: I shall TD a GS and let you know.

@antz.bin and Satyamzma: I have ridden the Apache and feel its pretty comfortable. Will go for it if the others fail.

Can someone tell me if the Avy 220 fits my new requirement?

I shall keep the thread updated. More suggestions are always welcome

The R15 is the best machine for the best balance of power, looks and handling. total VFM. With just my bigbore kit and exhaust, you can get a sureshot increase of nearly 10% in fuel efficiency. Which means you make more power and still get more FE than stock. The R15 is an engine in its own league with my custom parts. Most lower cc engines wont be able to match the efficiency and power after the mods.
All the work can be done on a brand new bike. Infact its a common myth to not Mod a new bike. Its basically a mind affair only. The newer the bike, the better the quality of internals and the more reliable and friendly the entire mod job is, instead of a battered 2-3yr old engine. All the parts can be swapped from day one.

Harish: I would suggest a joelled R15. A close alternative would be a joelled RTR 160.

Having ridden both R15 and the RTR's, I would say that R15 is more "stretched out" and RTR feels somewhat like "cramped". I'm 6 feet 1 inch tall. R15 felt "just the right amount" of sportiness needed in the riding position.

Handling wise, both are good. I actually did a knee down cornering on a R15, but when I tried same thing on the RTR's, its stock tyres were not giving me enough confidence to do it. Tyres can be changed though.

Don't go for a Avy 220 though, it won't be gentle on mileage. Moreover, slow speed riding requires more effort than others, just like it is for every cruiser.
You can expect Avy to give 30-35 kmpl under sane riding.
