  • Discover150/P135/Yamaha SZ - Budget 60k

    Guys,

    After going on the search for Bullets, pushing downwards to HH Splendors and finally floating on Discover 150, pulsar 135, Yamaha SZ. i'm now confused... :|

    What kind of bike i am looking for :

    Good for city zipping and decent on highways
    Decent mileage, above 50.
    Reliable
    Sporty(maybe!)

    I've narrowed down to Discover 150, pulsar 135 and the Yamaha SZ.

    What pulls me to the D 150?

    Affordable price tag, good looking ride fitted with disc brakes.

    Pulsar 135

    The name! Sporty look

    Yamaha SZ

    Yamaha itself, Affordable!

    What do you think i should go for? Do you suggest any other alternatives? i'm looking specifically at the 150cc segment, i don't have many alternatives for my budget do i?
    Why Biking?
    Because all other sports need only one BALL!!

      When deciding for my first bike I test drove the later two. Found SZ far superior in terms of engine refinement, smooth gearbox and ride quality. My uncle drive D135 and I find it good so D 150 should be at least as good. I would suggest go for SZ.

        Now is the time to take test ride of the short listed bikes!! welll D150/P135 both comes with front disc and P135 comes with all the goodies such as digital console & led tail lamps and stuff. There is an SZ-R that comes with front disc, but I don't think it comes for 60K. Though on the paper it looks like D150 offers the best bang for buck, it's actually P135 that is best VFM here.. it's got excellent top end performance. SZ is a smooth operator, got decent top end.. but it doesn't offer any advantage over the other two. If you are concerned with brand Yamaha, you can go with this. Otherwise it should be D150(commuterish seating position)/ P135LS (slightly sporty). My call would be P135LS.. it's a pleasure on highways, very zippy in city (of course other two are also zippy inside city).

          My friend owns a p135, to be honest, i like it. i asked him about the bike and he advised me against it!! Its likely to boil down to the d150 or the p135.

          How good is the D on highways? i'm looking for comfortable seating position too.

            I haven't got a chance to ride D150, but I owned P135 for 10 months before selling it as I was travelling overseas. Did about 9500kms on it and just loved it. Good mileage, I got 55+ consistently.. even got 60-65kmpl when I rode it sedately. Excellent pick up, right up there with 150cc's.. sharp handling and very good top end are the main positives and couple that to the price it's retailing at makes it a great VFM buy. Only negative I can think of is that performance goes down with heavy pillion, even then if overall weight is about 120kgs, it would still be great.. but anything about 135 or above it, you can notice that bike feels a bit strained at topend (after 90kmph). It won't do the same top speed as with single rider.. I was able to do 122kmph(speedo indicated) while I was riding alone. But with pillion it falls to more like 108-112 kmph (speedo indicated).

            But overall, if I have to pick a bike in 60k even now, I would go with P135LS blindly. Forgot to mention that I only had to spend for oil changes & fuel.

              I too would sugest you P135. My friend owns one and i have riden it a lot The four valved engine is amazing, as said in prev post you will feel the performance drop with a pillion and it is totally acceptable for a 135cc engine. The top end is good and on highways it can easily cruise at 90-100Kmph. How much ever you rip it, it never gives below 50kmpl.
              The only thing i hate to the core of the bike is its suspension, the suspension is damn stiff. Long ride with a pillion? there cannot be anyother hard way to torture anyone. The seat is also so hard you will feel like you are sitting on a stone bench. If you are buying for city rides and solo long rides blindly go for it.

                  That's a close competition there. All three bikes are good and deliver the best at their respective price points. Test ride all of them and go for the one you like. But if you are going for the SZ, it should be the SZ-R (With a Front Disk Brake) that you should be opting for. Going for any of these three bikes would be a decision you wouldn't regret. But if the age old adage "No replacement for displacement" goes, It should be either the D150 or the SZ-R.

                    Go for Yamaha 150cc bikes, P135 is afterall not a 150cc bike it vibrates after 60kmph, personally I feel P135 styling is very awkward (even amateur mechanics will do better styling in their garages). Bajaj is comparing D150cc with Splendor in their ads, so be careful. D150 may be sacked soon and replaced with boxer 150cc as the sales are poor due to launch of D125.

                      @ Thread Starter - I have read in many places about the blistering performance of the P135. So far haven't heard of any serious issues with it either. I only rode it for like 2 mins in a confined area so couldn't test its real potential but it felt good.

                      Go for P135 if you like good performance (believe me, it counts) and don't just look at fuel efficiency (which is not bad on P135 at all though).

                      So go for P135.

                      The only downside for P135 was its short handle but I guess it's a clip on handle which can be adjusted to some extent. It's a good package.
                      Signals which are timed for 50 Kmph are also timed for 100 Kmph :)

                        Thanks for the inputs everyone.

                        My friend owns a p 135, he hasn't maintained the bike so well but still that was enough to have a look at the performance. I also took a test drive at a local showroom. These are from both the bikes.

                        Pros
                        1. Pick up was awesome.
                        2. Braking was smooth
                        3. Turning and zipping thru traffic was amazing!
                        4. I clocked around 75kmph on the speedo before i had to slow down! Didn't really vibrate.
                        5. The two piece handlebar did exceptionally well. There was no strain for the driver.
                        6. Disc brakes, electronic speedo.

                        Cons

                        1. The gear shift lever isn't perfectly placed. Good footwear should negate this effect.
                        2. really hard seat.
                        3. Small fuel tank, should have been around 12 litres.

                        I also took a D 150 for a test drive.

                        Pros

                        1. Simple bike.
                        2. Good mileage
                        3. Decent Pickup
                        4. Good price

                        Cons

                        1. All down gearshift... well i'm not a fan of it.
                        2. Pick up seems to be a bit lower than the P135.
                        3. Really heavy handlebar - Not useful for zipping in the city.

                        @cmahajan

                        I'm not really looking for fuel efficiency but still, this one is capable of around 55-60 plus i liked the short handle

                        @lsp2310

                        The review i read said that although it was a 150cc bike, its power wasn't as much as those bikes. Unfortunately i don't remember where i read it.

                        @Youngking

                        wow!! 50kmpl no matter what?? awesome!! Long rides, yes. With pillion, maybe. What if i change the seat or something? the seat is something that i don't like!

                        @vrugonnab

                        I don't think i would be doing breakneck speeds with a pillion rider! I would be more than happy to run at 60-80 with a pillion rider. And you touched 122?? wow! I've touched 114 on an apache 150 and a Yamah FZ and i was under the impression that those speeds were high. A friend actually touched 140+ on a P220, but i'm not that kinda speeder

                        So guys, i think i've finalized on the P135. Going for the red color, a personal choice again, i'm not a fan of black. I spoke to the showroom and they told me that you could expect immediate delivery so i don't think it would be of much trouble

                        Thanks for all your inputs guys!

                          Congrats! it's an awesome ride and you will love it. Not that the other two are bad, but P135 is simply the best for 60k.

                            Ride safe, get a very good helmet before you take a delivery of the bike.

                            Cheers!

                              If your budget is 60k, why don't you try Yamaha SS125. Yeah, it's not a 150cc. But the ergonomics and performance are simply awesome for a 125cc bike. And it does look bigger and stylish than some of the 150cc bikes around.

                              I have owned a Gladiator before. I loved it. SS125 has improved version of Gladiator`s engine. It`s so refined and the ride is butter smooth. DO take a test ride before you finalize.

                              Note: Not the YBR 125. But SS125 which has 5 gears and disc brakes.
                              Thanks,
