Yamaha's strategy: Big Products, Small Cities. An Interview with Hiroyuki Suzuki.

''We'll penetrate smaller cities with top-end products'': Q&A with Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO & MD, Yamaha Motor India.

Yamaha Motor India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Japanese two-wheeler major Yamaha, has an ambitious target of selling one million units in the next couple of years. Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO and managing director tells Probal Basak they plan to invest $10 million by 2012 in capacity expansion and extend its reach in smaller cities with top-end products to achieve the sales target. Edited excerpts:

Q: You are planning to enter the scooter segment as your parent company Yamaha Motor Corporation is developing the product for the Indian market. How will that improve your position in the Indian market?

A: We are planning to launch scooters next year. We will share the details at an appropriate time. We definitely see our foray into the segment as something that will strengthen our foothold in the two-wheeler segment. We are hopeful our entry will provide an impetus to rev up sales and increase our market share.

Q: Did the tsunami in Japan impact your Indian business?

A: Most of the components are imported from Indonesia, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries, so, we did see any impact on our operations here.

Q: You sold about 250,000 units last year, and are eying a market share of 10 per cent in the next couple of years, which means you have to sell more than one million units (as 11.8 million two-wheelers were sold in the country last year). How will you achieve that?

A: We will launch top-end products since we are doing quite well in the premium and deluxe segments where we aim to achieve 20 per cent share by the end of this year. We see a high demand for such products in the B and C category towns and in rural markets. We also aim to achieve one million unit sales by 2013 and look to invest $10 million by 2012 in capacity expansion as well as in new product development.

Q: You have 13 models under your portfolio. Which are the ones doing well in terms of sales and what segment is going to be your focus to achieve the sales target?

A: Speaking in terms of sales, our premium and deluxe segment models (150cc+) YZF-R15, FZ series and SZ series have done extremely well in the Indian market. We have been able to achieve a market share of 14 per cent in deluxe segment over the last two months. We will continue to focus on this segment, particularly in B and C category towns to increase the penetration levels. However, our focus will not lessen in the entry-level segment as this segment has also been instrumental in driving sales.

Q: There were reports you are coming up with a third plant? Do you have any location in mind?

A: We have facilities at Surajpur in Uttar Pradesh and Faridabad in Haryana. The Surajpur plant can roll out 600,000 motorcycles a year, which can be expanded to one million units, while the Faridabad plant can manufacture engines and other components. So, there is no immediate need. But yes, we will start planning for a new factory by the end of this year.

Q: What is you growth strategy for this year?

A: We plan to sell 500,000 motorcycles this year (domestic 350,000 units and export 150,000 units) and look to achieve overall 10 per cent market share over the next few years with new product offerings, enhanced sales and service network and strong marketing initiatives.

As usual with Yamaha, there's no news about any new products. They just say they're going to use existing products to penetrate small cities. They did a one time research, made a product from it and they won't move on it seems, until the demand stops for their existing products.
It's a good business strategy, equivalent of crushing the sugarcane until its juice it out.
Neither are their products fastest, nor the most fuel efficient. Neither the most reliable and nor the cheapest. Where is their USP I wonder?
Don't they really need some good products rather than just C-class town penetration and marketing?

They really need to improve dealer networks and conduct dealership training. The one dealer in my city is pathetic, charges a lot of money for services and spares. Owners are at his mercy.

You should write the specifics of the dealer on this forum and mail it to Yamaha too! They are THE most responsive manufacturers I have come across with. And this I say despite having a very bad ownership experience!

I read that. And I said "there's no news about any new products" and it stands. Do you have "a news about a new product" from this article? Which product?

They just 'hinted' and hinting is the thing they have been doing since years. Remember, that video interview than 'hinted' at R6's CKD launch. Where is the R6 after 2 years of that video? That old man who said that, took the media girl on a ride on his R1 later, but actually we were taken for a ride by his loose 'hinting', which never came true.

Maybe he just meant an R15 update as the top end product. Maybe top end products mean 150cc bikes and their remixes like FZ, FAZER, etc. Maybe a Fazer with new colors might come?

I hope he would have said something assuring like "we will launch a 250 or 600cc bike by the end of 2011." That would be news, not these loose statements that could mean anything...

Yamaha Sold 0.25 mn units last yr and wish to grab 10% of market share by 2013 i.e. 1mn units in next 2 years which means 100% growth rate for next 2 years. It sounds unrealistic.
To make it happen Yamaha will need to drastically expand its dealer network (when they are talking about focus on B & C catagory town and rural market where they have very less pressence)
will require many new successful launches very soon (it takes time for a new product from to gain momnetum of that sought)

The only thing they have to achieve this is production capacity :-D, does Yamaha thinks they can achieve the target just by this???

good news.. But things would be better if Yamaha concentrates on service and support too.. This may increase the chances of customers staying with yamaha when upgrading their bikes

Nice to hear something different from launching low-end products for market share!

Its the attitude of the general Indian towards motorcycling.Complain everything to YAMAHA.that is the only way out.Like Satyen said YAMAHA is very responsive.i have first hand experience of several issues and they do respond promptly.

Hmmm.... wonder where those guys who were predicting the demise of R15 with the advent of CBR250 are... the CBR250 was suppose to massacre R15 sales.... what happen to their Nostradamus prophecies... oh I get, they have gone back to reading the tea leaves and coming back with a plausible excuse...
