  • Mahindra & Mahindra optimistic about scooter segment, to relaunch Stallio

KOLKATA: Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), which recently forayed in the two-wheeler segment, is optimistic about the opportunities that the scooters segment presents, a company official said.

"The scooter industry is growing at a very fast rate and we see a good demand growth", M&M Vice President (sales and customer care Dharmendra Mishra told reporters here today.

"We expect a double-digit growth in scooter industry this fiscal", he added.

The scooter industry had almost become dead a few years back, but it is reviving now. The demand for scooters would emanate from the rural and semi-urban regions, he said.

The company had also ventured into the motor-cycle segment with a 125 cc engine displacement model and has started to export two-wheelers to South East Asia and African countries in a small way.

With a capacity of five lakh units per annum, the company sold 1.70 lakh units last year, Mishra added. The company enjoys nearly 10 per cent market share in the two-wheeler segment.

KOLKATA: With an eye to the fast growing motorcycle market in India, Mahindra Two Wheelers Ltd (MTWL) Monday said it will relaunch its 110cc bike Stallio later this year.

"We will be relaunching the Stallio during the festive season this year. Earlier, we had made a soft launch of the bike. We have made some modification and it is ready for launch," Devendra Shinde, marketing vice president of MTWL, told reporters here.

The Mahindra Group company , which entered the two-wheeler market in 2008, has registered a 53 percent growth in eastern India during April-June this year over the same period last year.

The company, which currently deals in 125cc scooters, is working towards expanding its portfolio.

"We have a strategic intent to be an end-to-end player in the two-wheeler market. Over a period of time, we will have presence in the motorcycle segment as well," said Shinde.

He added that the company's participation in this year's Moto GP would go a long way in creating a brand space for itself in the motorcycle market.

Mahindra Racing, comprising German rider Marcel Schrotter and British racer Danny Webb, will be participating in the 125cc class of the 2011 Moto GP championship.

Italian design house Engines Engineering, which the Mahindra Group acquired earlier, has been working on the designs of the bikes.

"Although our major emphasis is on scooter market, with increasing demand in the rural and semi urban markets, we are also committed towards the motorcycle segment. Work is on developing 135cc and 155cc motorcycles," Shinde added.

The Mojo was supposed to the "item number" which bring in crowds to the theatres (sorry showrooms).

But with Honda CBR250R already in India, the revamped Yamaha R15 expected soon and the KTM 200 Duke hopefully by the year end.. the Mojo (sheesh..!!) in the form which was unveiled last year, coupled with a very nascent after sales supprort makes very bad business sense.

M&M not pursuing stake in Scooters India: Pawan Goenka

NEW DELHI: Mahindra & Mahindra is not pursuing buying a stake in state-run Scooters India Ltd., its President Pawan Goenka said on Monday.

Earlier this year, local media had reported that utility vehicles maker Mahindra & Mahindra and three wheeler maker Atul Auto were looking to buy a controlling stake in the loss-making firm.

It seems Mahindra 2Wheelers had earlier decided to purchase the Scooter India Ltd, a firm going in loss, but they now changed their mind.

What does the "Scooters India Limited" do? I've seen no product of theirs! Why are they buying a dysfunctional company?

This is a government company that used to make a scooter in the earliest 60's or 70's IIRC, called "Lambretta". It was a successful (only?) scooter back then, but time changed it.
Then, the government decided to disinvest and sell the company because its assets weren't generating anything, being a defunct company that it is.

Atul Motors and Mahindra showed some interest, out of which Mahindra backed out.

@ deadpiper: No idea where Mojo disappeared. It's design was heavily critisized by Xbhp and other bikers, thus raising a question on its potential itself. Personally though, I was hoping it to be a second Karizma in terms of touring.

little correction here, lambretta was first produced by innocenti of italy, then it was produced by "Automobile Products of India" under liscence from Innocenti. my dad had a lambretta scooter and it had a logo in front mentioning API. i don't know what happened after that.

may be as the website of "scooters india" claims that it was later purchased by them. may be it was the time production and sale of lambretta scooter ceased and and a new model was launched called "lamby", lamby was very much similar to lambretta, with some changes like front mudguard was smaller and side panels had locks with handle inside cover. also stephney design was changed.the new lamby was a bit smaller and less wider by a few cms, then original lambretta. the footrest design was also changed a little bit.

while origianl lambretta produced by API had around 30-40 % parts "made in italy", like H.T. coil, switches, headlight reflector, and some engine parts. the lamby had all parts made in india.

there is some information delebrately hidden on "scooters india" website, as my father purchased lambretta in 1976 with API logo on it.

as far as i remember, when i was in school, may be in 5th or 6th standard scooters india was producing "Vijay Super" scooter.

What was the issue with Stallio?

                      Guys,

I would like to know as to what the issue with Stallio when it was originally launched? I heard that it was an issue to do with the gearbox. How come they didn't find this out during testing. A gearbox issue is a major one.

ya the second one is SYM - and considering that mahindra already has a colaboration with SYM for scooters, we can expect it in india soon.

and regarding the first one- "diablo" the report says its 300 CC producing 25 BHP.

                              but Diablo sure looks good.
