  • City bike for a newbie

    Hey

I need your help in deciding which bike to get... I have driven gearless scooters like activa till now so its gonna be my first bike.
Below are my requirements/usage details and my inferences for the same :
Mostly city driven:- Need a bike which can handle 60-70 max without vibrations ....No need for more power . Looking at 125-150 cc ones ?
Light weight:- Its gonna be my first bike so need an light easily drivable one .
Mileage:- Would like it to return 50+
50-60K budget:- I can put in upto 70-75K but only if the bike is a true VFM for the features it offers but will ideally like to not go more than 60-65K .

    Bikes I have shortlisted
    Pulsar 135ls : 64K OTR Light weight + mileage + decent power. Maintenance ???
Yamaha sz-r: 65K OTR decent power + decent weight. Mileage/less bhp than pulsar ????
Yamaha ss125: 60K OTR light weight + mileage

B/w i am 5 8" and 75kgs ..average build. Any other bike you guys can suggest ?

        Me thinks Gladiator
        Fit and Finish-Top notch.
        Fuel Efficiency-Good.
        Looks-Good.
I do not know about vibrations et al but since your initial requirements states that power should be adequate, then I think it is a good choice but if want awe-inspiring acceleration, then Pulsar it is

Pulsar 135LS, without a doubt. It returns better mileage figures among the selected bikes. Obviously has better performance, it's lighter of the three bikes with about 120kg kerb weight. You might already know that Bajaj's spares are dirt cheap and so maintenance will not be an issue. So, it fulfills all your selection criteria. I've used this bike for about 10k kms before selling it due to my overseas deputation. Issues nil, completely satisfied with it's performance & handling. You can also check P135LS ownership thread, it's almost two years now since it's launch and there aren't any serious problems reported on this bike, so I wouldn't raise any doubts on reliability of the bike.

Thanks for the replies guys ... I don't wanna go with twister or anything less than 125cc.

Not very interested to go for ss125 mostly as spending 4-5K more i am getting a 150 cc bike. I am fine with a 125 cc only if I am getting a substantial diff. in price like with the slingshot which is ~55 OTR .Howz it ? . I am still to see one on the roads ..Also Is there any other decent 125cc ~55K which scores on the features I mentioned ?

I am mostly looking b/w pulsar and sz-r as they are literally pitched together in price.
Pulsar has more power even being 135 cc and has a good mileage also.. but are there any areas where sz-r scores over pulsar except being 150cc ??

^^^ probably engine smoothness, can't think of anything else. But overall, P135LS is loaded & fun, there is no doubt about it. You can go for Slingshot, but make sure that you have a service centre near by.

Surely go for either one, pulsar 135 or yamaha sz. Since you are expecting just 80-90kmph max both will do good. Pulsar is overall good value for money and its real easy within city. But the sz on the other hand has great build quality and looks like a bigger bike (150cc) so if you want looks get the sz.

Slingshot, well have to say I've been impressed with suzuki gs-150 and the access. Cant say anything wrong with either, so may be suzuki slingshot is a reliable bike, but as the case with suzuki they havent had good sales figures. I've hardly seen more than a couple of those on the street. Personally I wasn't very happy with the looks but i don't question suzuki reliability. So It's up to your personal choice! good luck
Been obsessed with momentum ever since i was born, but 0 - 200kmph took 30yrs! This will do for now!

P 135 and read my review

Definitely Pulsar 135 outclasses both your above options easily in both power and mileage. Szr would give you max 42-44 in city so you can easily discard that out. Gladiator I personally don't like. Pulsar 135 has the fun to ride factor and power matchable to 150cc bikes and mileage matchable to 125cc bikes. Also it has 4-valves which is a high technology which leads to high-revving motor. If you want a sedate bike I would suggest to go for Shine rather than SS125. SS125 has spares problem from my knowledge and looks dated. Test ride Pulsar 135 and Shine both are the most selling bikes and you would buy either of them (probably P135) and reply to me with thanks

You can either go with either Yamaha SS 125 or Honda Shine both are good commuters in the city. If you are looking for a 150 Cc go for either Unicorn or SZ. These bikes have great reliability and handling is equally good in the city.
All these bike are not overpowered they are tuned as a city commuter.... Test ride the bikes and choose your steed

                        hello

my suggestion wud be go for the p135
                        fresh looks
                        good styling
                        good performance
                        good mileage

its like the best of both worlds(from 125 and 150cc)

i wud also suggest the discover 150

its torque and power are similar to p135 and the max torque and power figure is achieved at lower rpms

it is cheaper than p135 by about 5-8K bucks

its also a maintenance free bike

the only con is its looks are just ordinary and it doesnt have those digital speedo and goodies

p135 and discover 150 provide almost similar mileage

infact i too am looking for a new bike and confused between the 2

Mayank close ur eyes and go for Pulsar 135. Discover is also good but looks aren't exciting but good buy for a budget. P135 looks sporty and revs like anythng. mileage is also superb in the city. Bajaj ASS is quite awesome from my earlier experience.

ASS?? u mean the ASC right??

well yes my eyes are glued on p135 and i keep comparing all the bikes within that price range to p135 to see if i can find a better bike....

yes discover looks very ordinary and is a budget bike and i learnt riding on it(just rode it in building compound) and found the clutch a little hard...p135 is way beter but quite confused why bajaj priced it higher than d150? with just a little more plastic,a digi concole and 2 extra holes in the engine head :P

actually i read somewhere about bajaj launching a new bike somewhere in may it wud be a commuter and hence posibility of adding it t the discover series is high so i was comparing..i they launch a better bike than p135 i'll go for that however it'll always be a concern that it wud be a bajajnew bike and p135 has be testest and prooved over tha last 2 years...only thing keepign me interested in it is they said the new tech developed by bajaj in developing p200ns might be employed in the new bike...

^^ That's because P135LS is a far better bike when compared to Disco 150, it's not just goodies, but the top end performance is something that the Disco 150 is not designed for. Where as P135LS thrives at top end, keep it at 100kmph as long as you want, it doesn't complain.

Yes, new launches from Bajaj are around the corner, probably May/June would be the time. If you got patience, just wait it out. If Bajaj's progress is any indication, waiting is a smart thing to do.
