  • Honda CR 125 engine on its way to India!

    Hi guys!

I've been looking for a liquid cooled compact 2-stroke engine for a long time now and i have finally bought a Honda CR 125R 1984 (yes its very old, as old as me). But it packs quite a punch. Stock motor gives out 31hp, but this one here probably gives out half :P. It has a lot of work, but i'm planning to rebuild the engine (atleast the top end) with a Wiseco or ProX piston, check the clutch assembly and i really hope the crank and con rod are good, cause its a big job to open up the crankcase on these engines.

Once i do this, I'd like to bring it back to India (i live in Bangalore and i'm studying in Sweden presently), and use the engine on a project bike. I dont intend on using this engine on the road due to legality issues, but would be pretty cool to do so!

I have two options with regard with customs:

    1) To bring the engine as a whole, as its very compact (probably 20kgs, haven't weighed it yet) by keeping it in my suitcase or getting it in a carton as a second luggage piece.

    2) To bring it in parts with the crankcase unit as a whole and other parts like the head, piston, radiator, carb etc through my friends baggages.

I dont want to get into trouble with the customs guys but I do intend to use this engine only for private use in a go-kart or in a farm. Does anyone know about the customs formalities on engines or spares, for private use (non-road use), something like ATV's in private property.

I will be reaching India at the New Delhi Airport in October where I will go through an immigration check and I will be moving to India for good so i can avail Transfer Of Residence for my belongings (not a complete motor vehicle).

I am also following cool_dude_sunn_y's progress at :

...on his engine import, but he has still not brought any parts to India yet.

Here are some pics of the bike and guys please help me out as i have just one month to do this and i really want this engine!! any help would be appreciated. and yes, I am familiar with two strokes and stripping engines.

Money is not really a problem, but again, I wouldn't wanna go overboard.

as per rules, motorcycle parts can'nt be brought as a part of baggage. if cought you have to pay duty and fine. you can bring as parts in different bags, again illegal, but less chance of getting spoted in the scan

I suggest you bring it in parts. and keep paperwork ready to show that its purpose was study material there, and you are bringing it with you for same. Maybe a letter from the HOD of your college etc will help.

I have decided to pack it in a box and parcel it to my friend in India and label it as parts. And it'll be all dismantled so it shouldn't be a problem. And a discussion of the similar topic on another forum suggested that i dont label it a 'old' or 'used' since it will attract more attention.

I will start to dismantle the bike tomorrow and post some pictures for you guys.

Pretty difficult to do that, no way of getting any letter from the profs

Hi guys, I still haven't left Sweden, but the radiator and carburettor have reached India safely :P.
I am planning to send the crankcase assembly by parcel since it is cheap, and will be taking the engine head and electricals in my luggage.

In the meantime, i'm trying to sell the rest of the bike in parts here. I wish i could bring back everything, but i'll probably get arrested...

                      Keeping my fingers crossed!!

                            Finally Home!

                            Hi everyone!

Sorry i haven't put up any updates for a while. Was really busy with finishing my final report and moving to India.
So thanks to the inefficiency of Indian Customs, i got the whole engine through . The crankcase weighing 16kgs was sent by normal post to my address in Bangalore, and i brought the engine head and electricals in two suitcases, all neatly packed in paper and plastic.

I got a new piston and sleeve, NGK's and a few other spares from the US last week. All i need is a new clutck kit and a packing kit and i'm ready for a rebuild!!

I dont have a cam yet, so i will put up pics soon... i can already see the 32 horses materializing )
