  • Is it wise to buy a CBR954 now?

    Hi,

Need some help in buying a CBR 954 at 5L.
    Details of the bike:-
    1. condition - average, 2004 made, I've rest ridden it, runs well, but some noise comes from the drive chain. The mechanic says it's because of the loose chain & could be fixed easily. Some screws & bolts are missing. Looks like the bike has not been used for a long period, may be around 6-8 months. Brakes working fine, the shock-abs are fine too. headlamp(the middle bulb) not woking, but could be fixed.

    2. DRI clean bike, ownership can be transferred. Price - 5L - non nego.

    My concerns:-

a> Is it adviceable to buy it? Later on, if I want to sell the bike, could it be sold for such price tag(with a little depriciation)?

b> Can an underseat exhaust be fitted to it without any damage/threat to the engine?

c> Can the headlamps be modified with angel/eagel(telescopic projectors) eyes?

d> Are the spare parts available for this bike in the market now-a-days?

Please leave ur advices, need serious help.

    Thanks in advance,
    samir, Pune

954 is a brilliant bike and will always be iconic
Can not really comment on the mechanical problems on the bike , but I would suggest taking it to a reputable Honda work shop and get their verdict , the guys who own Honda super bikes can help you with finding a person.
My point of view is , all you have to worry about it the engine and shocks ,and also electrical components , sany bike you buy will give you some problem or the other , what I mean is , you should be prepared to spend some TLC and money on it , so if you are not mechanically inclined , do not buy a used bike , but if you are prepared to work on the bike and if this bike talks to you , buy it .
This is just my point of view

Regarding spares , you bring a very good issue , which might help every super biker on this forum.
Why not create a sticky thread for wanted spares , am sure there are enough people on this forum who either live outside India or have contacts in India , who can direct you to the right source and the right price.I think the mods should make this facility available for our forum users , we will try different countries and see which one works well , and if we have enough people we can hook up some spare part dealer to sponsor xbhp and they will send out spares for a better rate
LEt me know what you guys think
drive safely... if not for you then for the sake of others!!

I'd take it. A "clean" 954 for 5 lakhs. I'll take it in a heartbeat.
A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel.

Replacing a loose cam-chain is not an easy job for indian mechs and goofing up on the factory valve-settings will lead to irreversible engine damage.

Did you verify the bike had clean papers (did you show them to a good RTO agent) or did you just take the mech's word for it?

Have you ridden another 954 or comparable bike to see if this performs just as well? I'd rather own a R15 that performs at 100% of its capability than an import that can perform at just 40% of its capability.

The 954 has a huge spares base outside india (Singapore etc.) and Honda engines are usually bullet-proof, and fixing this stuff would be cheap as far as spares are concerned but difficult as far as the mech's knowledge is concerned. Most foreign-bike cutloos here don't deserve to be trusted with servicing indian mopeds leave alone imported superbikes.

And the local honda dealer will most probably know nothing about this bike. They won't care either.

I would recommend you take up this ownership experience only if you are prepared to do most of the maintenance work yourself (if it's a good bike, maintenance will just be limited to routine oil-changes and filter-cleaning, and occasional spark-plug inspection/cleaning/replacement). A bad bike will be a poser, just like the "cool dude" in your profile pic.

Who needs more than 70 bhp when you don't need to slow down for the corners?

954 is a brilliant bike, but be sure of the papers...i have seen a few bikes in pune which were being sold as DRI cleared by showing their dri clearance letters. But actually these bikes were never impounded by dri and never issued any clearances, some smart chaps in pune got hold of a DRI letter made copies, put in their bike details and are trying to sell them clean bikes. You can approach the DRI office in Marine line Mumbai and get clarification from them.

As far as the spares are concerned almost every thing is available online, though a bit expensive but if you can afford to spend 500k on a used bike i am sure you can afford spares worth couple of grand. I am sourcing all my spares from ebay for my Honda CBR 600f2..they only issue is if you opt for the cheaper shipping modes it takes usually 2weeks for the spares to reach.
