  • Quick Q- Acceptable price for a 98 blade!

    Hi guys,

Ive located a 98 blade in fairly good nick and would like your thoughts on the price i should quote.

    Some details:
    -1998 cbr900rr
-Blore registered with a printed RC(bike is in the current owners name)
-Definately not a clean bike(with regards to duties-Undervalued)
-The only other available paper is a copy of a huge sheet of paper thats either a bill of lading or some duty calculation paper. it basically has the breakup of the costs and duties applied. again, its a photostat and not the original paper.
-New set of tyres will be given with the bike.
-The engine is smooth.. no knocking when cold or very hot.
    -Doesnt overheat
-Clutch plates and front brake pads would need to be replaced but not immediately.
-Front fork oil seal is busted(one)
-She goes in a straight line when the handles are left.
-Batt is around a year old
-Bike has definitely not been crashed but i noticed some tell tale signs of it being dropped at a very slow speed.
    -Bike seems mechanically sound.

Now the paperwork doesnt really worry me much but the price does! he is quoting 3.5L for it and i feel its a bit too high. Or as Rossiter put it- Its a LOT and a LOT is an understatement!! LOL

I intend on keeping this bike for a long time and would be working on it pretty much by myself.

Do chip in with your thoughts.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the prompt reply, Armeet. I agree with all the points you have stated. I had a 900rr for a while back in 2007 but it never belonged to me! It was the easiest bike to work on and very forgiving while being ridden.

The good thing bout this particular bike is that the front wheel has been swapped out with a 17incher which will reduce the chances of encountering a tank slapper.

How much do you think i could quote? a ball park figure would help!

TBH, depending purely on the age of the bike, i would not value it above 2L. Since you will be spending another 50-60k to give it a proper once over once you get it in your hands.

Did it get an overhaul recently? By recently I mean around 2-3 years back? And how much has it run already?

Considering a very modest 1 Lac kms running and no recent complete overhauls (since you didn't mention it) I think he should get around 2-2.5 Lacs.
Because by the time you get it repaired and overhauled, it would take your amount to around 4-4.5 Lacs anyways. Engine parts are never cheap.

Think about it man- you can't give 3.5 Lacs for a bike that requires further (un-estimate-able) work on it... can you?

However, if there's no major overhaul required in future, 3L should be an acceptable price.

Thanks, Samarth! The bike needs a bit of work but maybe to the tune of 10k. No mech will be involved as ill be doing the work myself!
I picked it up this morning for a price similar to what you quoted. Its from a known person and was barely used. Its done around 20 genuine kilometers!

Busted fork seal and non-alignment of handlebar with bike direction indicate it's definitely been dropped, probably to the left.

Everything can be fixed given the right mech, and I guess Bangalore has quite a few of them. However get someone to go over the papers and verify them. 3.5 lakhs may be a lot for a bike like that but what's an option to that? Crappy RDs exchange hands for 2+ lakhs nowadays...
Who needs more than 70 bhp when you don't need to slow down for the corners?

Vivek, one oil seal is busted and the tyre is practically gone! I was given a set of tyres with the bike and just need to put them on. I checked the handlebar alignment and it was proper.(although a mech can fix this). The bikes goes in a straight line but feels heavy to turn under braking. I guess ive been spoilt by the agility of the newer bikes.

A good 900rr is quite hard to come by now a days. Crappy 400rr's are going for 2.75-3L still! Would've loved a husky but the only one left was well out of my budget. Might get one when PV/Crazy get bored of the bike!!

Congrats on the purchase buddy...as far as the little mechanical issues are concerned they will continue to pop up every now and then..its a part and parcel of owning such vehicles. In my experience till now (been thru quite a no of bikes thru these years, from an early 80s model to as new as 2008) maintaining these rides is not an issue if you have a good mech and access to world wide web...yes cost is always an issue but i guess you would have already considered that in your budget...for oil seal check out pyramid parts (ebay seller is p-k-n trading), its the cheapest online vendor..only issue is they ship it via royal mail..hence 2weeks of delivery time, i myself order a pair for my 600, it costed me 10pounds including shipping and arrived exactly after 2 weeks...

Well this bike belonged to a friends back in 2007 and i had ridden and worked on it a lot. I find this bike rather easy to work on as compared to the other sbk's ive been around(mostly newer efi ones).
As soon as i got her home, i washed her and voila! she wouldnt crank 2 outta 3 times! Started cleaning all the couplings and connectors in the wiring and the switches! Since the bike was used about once in 3-4 weeks for a short spin, most of the connectors and switches had started to corrode(coastal weather). Cleaned and lubed the connectors and put em back! Havent had a problem eversince!

Ive spoken to Joe @ blore for the oil seals(2k) and oil filter(1.2K). Will probably order the parts tomorrow and start dismantling the front end once i get back from office. Does anyone know of someone who stocks and sells these parts at a more competitive price?

2k is rather steep for oil seals, the landed cost at my doorstep was Rs780 for a pair...i have mentioned the seller in previous post, have a look at it..
