  • Spare parts to store - RE CI Bullet

Well the bike prices have already gone up for second-hand CIs, quoting almost demonic amount, as if the bikes were purchased to make a profit. I guess that might happen to spare parts too some day, although not too soon.

I own a CI, a 2009 Electra 5-speed and rode it only for a few months, where it was covered by free services. The only part that I knew required frequent changes was the speedo cable. Lost 3 of those with harsh road conditions.

Please pitch in to suggest what parts should be stocked up for the CI. I am no sure about the differences between the CIs and the later models, hence do contribute.

On Bulls, yes. For sure not on 2-strokes, its very much alive & kicking here on xbhp. If only you had an RX or an RD, the answers would have been instant.

        Just kidding.

I dont see any reason to stock up parts for the Bullet. There are too many on the roads and too many manufacturers making various spares.
Max you can do is keep some items that go kaput routinely.

@diffuser911, if the bike is a 'keeper' its helps getting mostly model specific wear/consumable parts to start with- engine gaskets, cables & tricky electronic bits -tci etc followed by small failure prone items- oil pump worm, kick start/ shifter springs etc.

As of now most advantage is about saving time upon requiring a part & it'll soon turnout to be a rewarding hobby- collecting spares for bullet

@yamdoot, there's a couple of basic issues if one opts OE- availability & price. With aftermarket suppliers most aren't atleast as good as factory packed.

And i must add that many times even the brand store service resorts to after market items for something as common as gasket or seal for lack OE supplies with them or outside. Thats a perishable/ wear part, forget counter sales they can't get some for shop usage. How about this in a city known for bullets - Coimbatore or the big city in its state -Cochin

In my opinion, as yamdoot said, there is no need to stock the spares. The main components of bullet are not prone to damage unless your bike is being used by many people, and or used really harshly. If its a single hand careful drive there shouldn't really be a problem.

Regarding the quality of local spares, they indeed are not at par with the companys spares but mind it they arent bad at all too. Depends on where you buy these things, which in our case i guess for our beloved bikes we wouldnt opt for anything really that cheaply made.

The cables, wiring's, and other electricals are not expensive. The main component being the crank, which tends to crack under too rough riding. And believe me rough in the literal sense as the original cranks do not break unless really abused. So that could be stocked.

Rockers, pistons, chain sproket assembley, tappets, clutch plates, magneto & rectifier (only for cdi versions i.e electra and later) are the ones to be stocked. (again these do not give up so easily unless not properly mantained. There are a lot of local silencer assembleys made, which are really annoying. I believe in your bike you have the short muffler silencers, the originals are easy to find but if kept for a long time without usage they tend to rust. That goes for the mudguards too.

Getting your tank and headlight dome, the anti rust treatment is a very good idea. Try avoiding the double horns if they require a relay to work. The relays are the real culprits to damage the batteries.

Well those are just suggestions though......Regards and Cheers !!

                  I too second it.

you don't really need to stock any major bullet parts.

if you regularly head out for short rides out of town then simply keep ABC cables (accelerator, brake, clutch) with you along with a spare tube.

and if you do ride really long distances or bad terrain (like Leh), then additionally keep 0.5L engine oil and clutch plates.

apart from that, almost all bullet spares can be procured very easily, both from the authorized service centres and from the after-market spares shops in any city.

True that one need not stock Major parts but there are very many Minors which may give up with no warning, grounding the machine & then wasting time- effort hunting parts.
Though a bit OT: If on longer ride better to carry extra bits like pushrod adjusters, rocker arms, oil pump worm, spring kits for brake& g'box, ignition electrics, wheel bearings, & a set of apt size piston rings. These come at minimal costs and also makes the difference between stranded & (atleast) limping on to safe ground.

Poka-yoke didn't exist when bullet was designed
