  • To Buy My First Bike - Need your Suggestions - Budget around 85k

Hello frnds..Its really great to have such a forum for bikers and I really feel good to join this site...I'm gonna buy a bike next month and want ur suggestion...

This is MY first bike (I used to ride my Dad's Bajaj-CT100 before)..I'm not a leaner - I ride well...I don't have particular limit in budget but anything below 85k is good. These are my requirements:

    1) I have to ride in traffic daily to go to office..so approx would be 12kms a day.
    2) I really like going somewhere alone on my bike for a few hours..I mean, I just ride it for fun when I'm free....So approx. on a saturday, I would be riding 80kms, atleast.
    3) Mileage is concern here..as I don't want to burn my pockets..So, I'd prefer atleast 45 kmpl..anything below 45 would make me sad (in some way).
    4) The big thing here is, I'm only 5'4...So I don't want to scare my gf with inability in balancing the bike..Anyway I don't mind if the bike is somewhat heavy like 140kg.
    5) I'm not a speed freak, but I always enjoy crossing 85kmph on my bike.
    6) Last but not least, let those spare parts be available for a normal price..(not cheap not costly)

There were few options given by my frnds and others, like :
FZ16 : Looks like a beast and I love this one...I test driven it twice,..really good for my height and felt light weight..but mechanic said that mileage is only 32kmpl.
P150: Good but didn't like it for no reason.
My cousin's TVS Sport: Very light weight (like a bicycle) and short for my height. Its 60+ mileage was good. But speed and power were disappointing. I like to have a better one.
P135: Good for power, mileage and really its light weight. But I felt it somewhat taller for me..I could touch my 2 toes on the ground!!!
And I didn't try other bikes...

I would be looking for ur suggestions... p.s. consider not only the bikes I mentioned here, but also I'd be happy to know if there are any other 'better' bikes too.

Faster, faster, faster, until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death.

Life may begin at 30, but it doesn't get real interesting until about 150.

      1. I guess P135 meets your requirement. Power, fe, cheap spares.
      2. You can also try Apache 160/180. A180 if ridden sanely would return 45km/hr but it will shoot your budget by 5k.
      3. Try Suzuki GS150R but as you mentioned height be a concern for you.
      4. Honda Dazzler/ Unicorn - Honda reliabilty with decent power and average.
      5. Yamaha SZR

dazzler is ok but honda will not spare u in the matter of spares........ toooo costly and rarely available.. keeping all the factors into consideration apache 160 will be ideal

Based on your requirement you need a bike giving 45+, cost of spares must also be cheap, but you need to frequent highways once a while so you need speed.
          Try these:
1.Yamaha SZR (I own this, must say it has awesome low end torque, good ride comfort, but not so good tyres and bit low mileage)
2.Honda Stunner (costly but quality comes at a price, good mileage of 55+ but this bike doesn't really have cheap spares)
3.Pulsar P135 (excellent power from 4valve engine, bit odd look and the seats are hard and dont feel good for long ride)

          4. WAIT FOR THE NEW KTM DUKE 125 engine Pulsar 2012.

There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

AFAIK Duke is going to launch 200cc bike and not a 125 cc in 2012.

yes...I agree that p135 seats are harder...
I just had a doubt, can't we make any changes to the seat..? sorry if my qstn was dumb..just got a thot..

Friends, I m not saying that spares shud be cheaper...suppose if a cheap spare is Rs.100 for a bike and costly spare is Rs.500, then I could spend upto Rs.300...I think you got the point..

Go through this link : http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/news/206...specs-out.html

I am not very much sure but Unicorn should suit your height. Also cheap spares do not mean the local ones. For example : ZMA's front fairing would cost around 3k whereas P220's fairing would cost less(I am not sure how much but less than ZMA).

Yes, I think you can adjust the Unicorn for your height but not much, since mono shocks have limitations, but rest assured even short ppl ride it comfortably.

The KTM 200 is the exact bike of KTM brand that will be launched as it is. But Bajaj is also planning for a launch from its Pulsar brand and I thought it might be this 125 KTM, but only time will tell this.

I do understand what you mean. For example consider the Accelerator cable in HH Karizma. Its a pair of 2 cables and both the cables including fitting charge comes down to 700rs! Whereas a Fz cable costs about 200Rs. and pulsar even cheaper!

No question is dumb as far as i see it!

Changing seat entirely or re stuffing cushions, will soften ur butt but the seating position and ride setting of shocks make you feel the hardness remaining on long ride. You can ajdjust shocks to soft suspension but you will compromise on stability and road handling of bike, what i mean is while taking curve on highways makes the suspension wobble. This damages ur shocks itself. Bad decision!

Also the Nitro Shocks are all for name sake. No wonder other companies don't use them. The Nitro gas usually leaks out of the chambers within few months, max 1 or 2 years.

I came to know from a friend that on his pulsar when his shocks became too hard, then they just manually adjusted the setting. When he asked what happended to Nitro gas, they said due to rough usage (indian road conditions) his bikes gas shock had become less effective and recommended to use it as it is or buy a new pair of shocks (this was when he had done 18,000+km or 1.5yr which is decent enough but I except shocks to last longer).

I would have recommended the Pulsar 180 but then it has engine issues so its best you drop any ideas of current ver. Bajaj Bikes. The Hero Honda (Hero Motocorp) bikes like CBZ will give you nightmare when it comes to spares and service. Mileage is so so.. Hence why would I buy that unless I was a fan of them. The TVS is just a recommendation, the spare quality and availiabilty of TVS is poor.

Test ride Yamaha SZR, Honda Stunner, Unicorn, TVS Apache and decide.

Bro!! as per your requirement, try Honda Dazzler or Honda Unicorn. It will come within your budget. Both the bikes is very good in terms of power & FE. It got looks as well. In Dazzler you will get both front & rear disc brakes whereas in Unicorn only front disc. Both the bikes are not heavy also. IMHO we give a test ride to both and decide which one you like.

2)Suzuki has a 150cc bike i dnt remenber its name..
3)u can consider discover 135 as well..as its not very expensive..will be 85 without much trouble..and is fuel efficient as well.
4)u can go for Honda Stunner or Honda Shine..they r good bikes..but hondas will have a long waiting period
You Do Not Need a SuperBike to Have a SuperCrash

Bro, do you know what you are recommending??
                              1. Apache service is pathetic with its issues ranging from engine to transmission, Its a mean machine which needs weekly care!
                              2. Its called Suzuki GS150R and its a very good bike, only issue here is availability of spares takes a long time and its more like for high ways with its six gears.
3.discover 135 ?? The model is stopped, why would some one go for a pathetic discover which vibrates like anything and gives flimsy grip and sure as anything the price of discover is not more than 50K!
4.Honda Stunner is a strict NO! Read the stunner ownership page and owners opinion well that its a bad piece of Honda product! Moreover you are just paying money for the plastic faring and nothing more, it looks like bicycle with lots of plastic. Rather I would prefer the Honda Unicorn or the Twister.
There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.
