  • [Ownership Thread]: 2011 Classic 500 Desert Storm

    Hello PetrolHeads,

Prelude: In 2001 after my graduation my dad got me a splendor and it was the most comfy bike for me back then. Used to ride it like a cycle, was so easy and never had any major accidents. Couple of years into owning a splendor, I had to leave the country for further studies and came back to India in July 2008.

My dad had by then sold the splendor and was badly in need of a bike so booked a Honda Unicorn without much consideration, didnt even test drive it. My dad had to use his political influence get it delivered within 2 weeks(while the waiting period was more than 3 months).

Took delivery and from the get go I didnt enjoy the drive. In 18 months of ownership I had driven a bare 1000kms, all the time using the car to get around even the corner stores. My initial feel was the clutch was tight and my hands were in pain even after a short drive. End of story.

My wife wanted an activa, so sold the unicorn for 55k and booked activa. Drove the activa for 3 weeks from home to office and back but my back started aching after taking the activa for the longest drive. Velachery - parrys (around 40kms to and fro). Back taking the car for everything.

Recently went to Vijayawada (Machlipatnam) to witness the birth of a close friends first child. He had a Teal Green classic 500 with 3k on the odo. Took it for a spin and loved it but I didnt want to make the same mistake. So I planned for a short drive around the coast of machlipatman. Drove around 160 kms that day in various road/no-road conditions and was very comfortable for me.

The Saga: Came back from AP and took a look at the royal enflied site and loved the military green. Called the dealer(RE Brand Store, OMR) but he said the green is not for sale in India. Also like the DS so told him I will come tomorrow to book.

OCT, 6th 2001: Called Kamal Pandey(Incharge for the OMR store) and confirmed that he is available and went to book around 3pm with a friend. When I first looked at the DS on display, I didnt take my eyes off for the next 30 seconds. Kamal was telling me the specs but was all blanks for me. It was amazing, It was nothing else I have seen already. I have seen a lot of bullets in movies/neighbours but my AP friend was the first friend who had a bullet and that was first time I was driving. Now seeing DS was like an another experience.

Spent the next half hour listening to Kamal explaining the features and the specs. He was very courteous and explained every single question silly or otherwise with patience. Now he wanted to start the paperwork. I wanted to sit on the bike for some pics. He didnt mind and I kicked it and even used ES. Took it off the center stand and started the bullet...It ROARED (Closed space ?)

So now the paper work started. WHAT AN AMAZING FEELING TO BOOK A BULLET. He treated me like some guy who came to book the new Audi/BMW. Totaly awesome. The owner booklet was also very smooth and classy. He took my personal details, collected the 1000Rs and gave me a questionnaire. Happily filled everything and came home anxious.

Posted the above pics on my FB and was happy to hear everyone congratulate me and say how the bullet looks awesome. 15 mins after posting the pic, got 6 phone calls from friends and their friends asking abt the specs of the bullet. Shared it with glee. All of a sudden, I am mini celebrity now.

Everyday at work, spent most of my free time reading thru posts about bullet on teambhp, bcmtouring and xbhp. All my collegues wanted to know my fascination abt the bullet. Eventhough there were lots of reasons I told them only one thing "gethu la" (means prestige in colloquial tamil).

When I went for booking the bullet Kamal did not even have a single TEST RIDE bullet at the OMR store and also he did not mention that there is an option to book a test ride for a weekend. I came to know abt 2 weeks after I booked and called Kamal Immediately to let him know my disappointment. Next day he called me with a test drive vehicle. A 20k on the odo teal green classic 500.

Happily took it home saturday evening only to find that the wheel alignment was total not right. When I hold her straight, it always went to my left. So drove it on the local streets, added 50kms on the odo and returned it monday morning.

Thatz my brother on the bullet. Now its 29th OCTOBER 2011.

Time to go home now. Will post the rest tomorrow.

Btw I booked on oct-6th and got it delivered nov 22'd. The expected delivery date Kamal wrote on the booklet was May 2012 )

Sorry for the long post. Sunny expected an essay and here it is )

    Thanks,
    Nags

      Congratulations

First of all let me congratulate your DS.It seems that you and I share the same bikes even I had a splendor witch got stolen in feb and my dad owns a activa,I use to take my splendor for long drives and I was very attached to it so when it got stolen i was very dissapointed and i had no choice but to use my dad's activa but its not good for long rides, even I am considering to buy the ROYAL ENFIELD CLASSIC 350 and will be booking it in a few days the only problem is that the waiting period is of 8-10 months over here in mumbai.
I would like to ask you one more thing, what did the store manager told you about how to maintain this bike as you may have heard that enfield bikes are known as rust buckets as well.

Thanks Amit. Yes Splendor was very easy to handle plus it had given 100kmpl few times. I would probably never bought that unicorn had my dad not given away that splendor.

Sorry that ur bike got stolen. It seems all RE dealers are saying 8-10 months to be on the safe side. I have not read anywhere in xbhp that someone has waited that long. Usually they will give it, 3-5 months time. RE dealer didnt mention much abt maintenance. He just insisted that I do all the free services at a A.S.S so I dont void the warranty.

In the last 10 days, one week it was pouring down here. So far I have not seen any rust forming except for in the bottom of the center stand. My car clearner, usually dusts the bike every morning and wipes down the rimes and spokes. Before getting on the bike, I usually just wipe down the engine and the body. Looks sparking now.

            Continued .......

So after returning the test drive CL 500, i am even more anxious now. Couple of days dreamt like riding one.

Having never used a helmet in the last couple of years, I started thinking like I need to get a helmet right away and get used to it while riding the Activa. So went to Pioneer Helmet shop in Adyar and got a Ninja Concept black for 650 Rs. Since the OMR dealer is very nearby I drove there straight.

Kamal was surprised to see me(As I usually call him before dropping in at the dealer). Did not want to pester him too much, so never asked to status of my booking. I just told him that I was around the neighbourhood to buy a helmet and thought I would drop in.

Luckily I spotted a DS in the parking lot with 600kms on the odo. Enquired abt it with the security and he said, its here for the 1st service. Took a couple of snaps of it and left the dealer.

Now I have set these pics as my wallpaper in lock screen on the iphone and admiring it the every chance I get.

Two days later I get a call from Kamal and the first thing he says is "Good News Sir". I am at work in the middle of a deployment but my heart started racing. I had no words so just said "Yes, wassup". He says the DS is ready he wanted to me to apply for the loan and he said within the next 15-20 days I should have the DS delivered. Great. I called the HDFC guy and handed over the papers to him the same evening.

Three days later I got an SMS that the loan is approved. Went to the dealer and gave kamal the rest of the amount as a DD.

As usual HDFC guys take their own time to send the approval letter to the RE dealer. Once Kamal got the approval letter, he called to inform that the vehicle has been allotted and if necessary he will find out the engine no and let me know but I was no more anxious like before so told him that its not necessary.

Now everything is done. When will I get the bullet? It seems HDFC takes 3 -4 days after sending the approval letter to transfer the amount to EICHER's account. So waited 3 long days. Called Kamal after 3 days requesting to see my bullet. He promptly gets the bullet from their Kalashetra warehouse to the Adyar Showroom but I was stuck with work that day and could not go to see my bullet.

Its 21st Novermber and my bullet is going for registration. Applied for leave the day before and called Kamal about 10am. To my disappointment he said they are not able to connect the RTO website to upload docs so it cannot be done today. With disgust went to office late only to be stopped by everyone at work asking abt my bullet and if they can see it. Told everyone that I am getting it tomorrow and spent the whole day at my desk.

Its 22nd November, texted kamal to know if the bullet has gone for reg. He replies positively. Since the RTO is close to my house, decided to go there with my bro. Looking at my bullet for the first time

Met with the RE guy at the RTO and requested him that I drive the bulet back to the showroom. He didnt say a word and he was completely ok with it. Took 10 mins to inspect the bulet for rusts and scratches and there was none. On my way to the showroom(12kms) I filled up the tank as the fuel indicator was on.

Standing in front of the showroom.

Next 10 mins Me and Kamal spent inside the showroom going over the Pre Delivery checklist. Came out and he showed me how to turn on, off, sidelock, air filter box, fuel indicator, Engine Malfucntion lamp, toolbox etc and finally handed over the bullet. Thanks Kamal

Took few pics of it before sending off my bro in my car and me getting ready to leave to ECR/Mahabalipuram.

Drover 100kms that day and was very happy with the way it handled. All throughout the day I was nervy putting her in 1st gear and rleasing the clutch and I had the feeling that she is leaving and I have to hold on to her if I wanted to be on top of her )

Congratulations and best wishes, dctmfoo. RE DS looks like a magnificent warrior in uniform. So, no 'Made Like A Gun' sticker on the tank in the new Desert Storm, which used to be there in other RE models.

One week and 250 kms on odo, I went to the A.S.S to get the new upswept silencer fitted. The mechanics struggled to remove the old one from the bent pipe. THe pipe was shaking and I was nervous. Finally they removed it and opened a new angular (their lingo) silencer from the box but it was not fitting properly into the pipe.

4 mechanics surrounded my bull and were discussing why it might not fit? Syed, another mechanic was called upon and he started making the`ENTRY SIDE of the new silencer big by using a hammer and flat screw driver. Also applied some kind of lube to the inside of the new silencer. But still its not going inside the bent pipe.

THey complained to the spare parts/service manager and he gave them a new one, but the same thing happened again. This time they did not try to make the opening big. After couple of mins they got the 3rd new upswept silencer and it fitted perfectly and it was fitted properly in the next 10 mins.

I asked them why.....and they just gave a wry smile. Anyways initially I thought they did not know how to fit the silencer and was very nervous but when I found out that the quality was sub par, I was even more nervous and scared to get anything changed from RE dealers.

I have read so many people's experience abt sub par parts and shody service and I am experiencing this for the first time. Hope its the last time.

Amazing snaps of an amazing bike, please bro do take care of her.

Good that you were present at the time of changing your up swept silencer or else they would have fitted the first silencer by hammering or god knows how to your bike

                      Thanks Amit and Sai.

Did my first service at 480kms. They opened both primary and secondray drain plugs below the engine and drained as much as 2 L and filled up exactly 2 L of the specified Motul engine oil. They checked the brakes, chain, replaced engine oil filter, cleaned air filter, cleaned both spark plugs did waterwash, applied oil in clutch, break leavers, straight and side stands. Other than that they did nothing as mentioned in the manual. When I asked them showing the manual they ticked everything in their checklist paper and said everything was done.

I dont know if RE is being too specific in their manual or the mechanics at the A.S.S are lethargic.

Eventhough they filled only 2L engine oil, during billing they charged me for 2.75L and 50Rs extra for consumables. I noticed this only after reaching home and didnt bother to call them up.

2 days after first service, I am starting to have issues which I never faced before.

Issue 1 : whenever I change gears/release clutch and turn the accelerator, I have to give extra acceleration to get it going....It feels like engine is dying if I dont give that extra acceleration and this does not happen all the time. Also I dont think this is because of engine cold issue as this even happens after riding for 15-20 mins.

Issue 2: while driving, sometimes to reduce speed in traffic, I just hold the clutch ( in any gear) and not give any accelerator and when I release the clutch after 3 -7 seconds the engine is dead. I have to quickly downshift to 1st and Electric start. This has been happening quite frequently since last couple of days.

Can someone please throw light on the above two issues?

                      Thanks in advance.

I think taking it easy about the 'things to do' in the manual is a bad thing for the bike. Why dont you get in touch with the regional engineer and tell him about this and tell him you are not satisfied(always behave in a friendly way with the RE guys and in a serious way with the ASC guys), build up a rapport with him...

I'm not good at technical stuff so cant say anything much...
But have one doubt, cant you use the electric start in any gear? or is it restricted only to neutral and first gear?

I made a good rapport with a particular mechanic when I went earlier to change my silencer. So I believe he has done enough to my bullet during the first service and when he said "Dont worry sir, everything is fine" I am taking his word. He even gave me his mobile number incase I had any queries or issues regarding the bike after this service. So I am trust him instead of the management guys.

Yes I believe u can ES in any gear but usually when the above issue happens I am going around 40kmph so thatz why i change to 1st gear before using ES.

Also today I left the bullet idling in the morning for 2+mins and did not face Issue 2. Earlier I gave only 30 seconds idling.

@dctmfoo: Did the problems got rectified? When can we expect a detailed ownership report of this beauty??? I'm planning to get the DS in 1-2 months.

First thing I did was Subscribe this thread. I have already booked RE DS from Mumbai showroom on my birthday 29/11 and awaiting its delivery and saving money simultaneously

I can very well understand how you must have felt after first seeing the DS in flesh. Even I was awestruck. The showroom is just next to the highway where they have kept the DS and Chrome on display. Every biker passing from there slows down to have a look at these beauties. Even the pillions keep gazing like they have never seen such a thing before. I had called up my close friends to book DS on my birthday and they all appreciated my decision.

Congratulations dctmfoo for buying the illusive DS and I really like all your pictures. You have already started touring on it. I wonder how you could resist not overspeeding the run-in limits. Regarding issues with the bike, I guess its a part and parcel of owning a RE. I know their service is below average and rust is a common issue but still the comfort and handling made me fall for it.

Keep posting your experience with the bull and I hope other DS owners also start posting their bit soon !
