  • help to buy my very first bike

hello guys....i recently joined xbhp and found it very interesting and helpful.

i own a honda activa which has run 47000 kms + (by my brother)

it is giving a lot of problems(i pay more for its repair than for the petrol to ride) and i am considering to get rid of it for good..

i am planning to buy a new 2 wheeler what do u guys suggest a bike or a auto gear scooter...i daily travel around 10-15 kms mostly for going to college or helping mum to go vegetable shopping or general purpose work....

i have no experience riding a bike(as activa doesnt count :P )... however i know how to drive a car...is it any similar?

suggest me some good options in the range of 60K rupees...a little up or down is fine..

    imp factors
-it will be my first bike to own and ride so a bike for a beginner...however not so "lalu" bike too

    - good build..not to heavy not to light...low on maintenance and after sales service ease of finding replacement parts and ease of finding authorised service centres

-decent mileage of around 55 to 60(not so rigid..a little high or low is fine)

-not so costly replacement parts...i dont want to burn holes in my pocket

-70% riding time solo...30% with pillion

    what do u guys suggest?
    thanks

Honda CB Unicorn fits all your requirements. Amazing 150CC for a beginner, if you can stretch your budget a little bit. Wiser choice than getting a 100CC and upgrading soon after.

You can consider Bajaj <=150CC bikes as they are better in mileage and ther n+1 number of service centres and any local mechanic can service them. Hero-(Honda) can be the next preference but their spares are not as low cost as Bajaj's. But in current market Hero's bikes have better resale value compared to Bajaj's.

Since you have not included "Looks" in your important factors, you might easily settle down with <150CC high efficient bikes.

I would suggest a Pulsar 135 or a Honda Twister (100 cc). But if you want a 150cc option, the SZ-R and Pulsar 150 fit your bill.

              As per your requirements :
              1) Good Build --> Almost every bike is pretty well built these days. You can never sell a substandard bike, unless it is Honda shine (Couldn't resist that one here)..

              2) Mileage between 55 and 65 --> Any 100,125,135cc bike currently in our market would give you a mileage around these figures.

              3) Spares --> Spares are not a problem except for Suzuki and Honda, but cheapest spares are for Bajaj

Yamaha SS125, Pulsar 135, Discover series, Hero Mota Splendour/Passion (Pro,Plus or whatever variant), Honda Twister should be the best one's you look out for.
These are the bikes that conform to your requirements. Take a test ride of each and buy the one that you like. Don't buy something just because someone else likes it. Always remember that one man's food is another man's poison.

Spares are not a problem with Suzuki if you live in a city with a service center because Suzuki spares are only sold at the service center to maintain quality standards.

for 60k...sz-x or sz-r is the best. much better than shine and pulsars.....smoothness equal to unicorn....ergonomics better than other competitive bikes....and yamaha quality is better than rest. mileage is 50-55. pick-up is mind blowing considering that its just 12.1 ps.

After riding SZ-R All of my friends said that this bike has best pick-up than their bikes (pulsar, unicorn, hunk etc.)

thanks a lot guys for the help....very much appreciated...

i am better off with a 125 cc bike...good for a beginer(assuming) and good for city commuting too...looking at the fuel expenses these days...

i shortlisted ss125 and p135 till now...the 98cc passion pro seems too little and hero seems to be lacking in the 100 to less than 150 cc good options..

twister has those very thin tyres(looks weird...dont know abt handling though)....how is it compared to the above 2???

honda and i assume all those japanese company bikes give a very big bill for each little spare or repair work....(personal experience..any1 else like me?)

                    any other suggestions?

i heard pulsars have those "engine" and "gear slipping" problems and require high maintenance..

or i guess i shud wait till the autoexpo 2012....

think twice before going for p135 because quality is not like honda and yamaha.

SZ is better than p135 as a package and the bike is also lightest in 150cc.
Yamaha spare is very reasonably priced and overall the build quality of the bike is superior than other bikes similar priced.

You should look one at finishing of yamaha, honda and bajaj products and you will know the difference.

Considering that we don't know where the TS resides, and also considering that the GS150R thread is full of owners who have reported issues with spares. I'd rather suggest restraint when it comes to Suzuki, no way implying that Suzuki bikes should be avoided.

@Anandsharma. Why are you cluttering every thread suggesting people to go for SZ-R because you think it is the best bike in the market and/or own it? When suggesting something, please try to make it relevant to the Requester's requirement, rather than your own experiences.

I would suggest you to go through the most recent 1000 pages of the GS150R thread and count for yourself how many issues about spares do you encounter.

It happens. Generally a satisfied consumer promotes the product. And i suggested SZ considering his needs as it falls withing the budget and told that it gives mileage of 50-55. If u think sz dosent suit the stated req. then reply.

I would rather suggest the Thread starter to check if he has a Suzuki showroom nearby, if at all he decides to go for a Suzuki bike. Why you taking it personal? You a Suzuki employee?
