  • Auto Expo 2012: Triumph Motorcycle now in India!

    Dear Readers,

The iconic British legend finally lands on the subcontinent as Triumph Motorcycles India. Ashish Joshi, Managing Director, announced a brilliant lineup of some of the best motorcycles from their stable that any bike lover would crave for and wish to have in his garage. And Ashish Joshi himself proudly presented the India Triumph stable as the bikes were unveiled at the Auto Expo 2012. In the rather bleak and dreary Auto Expo where there was not much to write home about regarding exciting 2-wheeler launches, this famed manufacturer came in thunderously.

And what was clearly striking was the price bracket:

The bikes that were launched were as follows:

    The Triumph Tiger XC

Guideline ex showroom pricing (NCR - Delhi): 11.4L

    The Speed Triple

Guideline ex showroom pricing (NCR - Delhi): 8L

    The Street Triple

Guideline ex showroom pricing (NCR - Delhi): 5,75L

    The Storm

guideline ex showroom pricing (NCR - Delhi): 17L

    The Bonneville

guideline ex showroom pricing (NCR - Delhi): 5,5L

    Daytona 675

guideline ex showroom pricing (NCR - Delhi): 7L

    Rocket III

guideline ex showroom pricing (NCR - Delhi): 22L

Mr. Ashish JOSHI, Managing Director had the courtesy of taking time out and talking to xBhp. I was fortunate enough to be talking to this man as he laid out Triumph's plans for India:

"Triumph did a meticulous study of the Indian market and we have decided to enter a field with calculated measures and with a vision that Triumph is here to make a mark and Triumph is here to stay long term."

How many bikes are you planning to bring?

"As of now we are clearly launching 7 bikes. The sub 800cc categories are in homologation."

What were the main plans of Triumph entering India?

"Triumph wanted to come and stay long term. Which is why we have chosen a path that would make the bikes affordable to Indians. And the only way to do that is to get the bikes via the CKD route. And when we took the CKD route, the bikes have become much cheaper. Besides, if you look at our choices, there are bikes that would appeal to the Indian bikers in all segments."

When can we expect to see Triumph motorcycles on the roads?

"We are planning to open around 3 dealerships initially."

Where would these dealerships be located?

"We are in the process of planning that out. It would be in the major metro cities where people have developped a motorcycling culture. It would take us another few months to iron thing out with after sales service, spares backup and rest."

Thank you Mr Ashish JOSHI for your time. It was a pleasure interacting with you.

Some Excerpts from the Official Press Release:

The iconic British motorcycle marquee, Triumph Motorcycles today brought out its 2012 lineup for the Indian market at the 11th edition of Auto Expo. The diverse portfolio of seven bikes, from each of its four prominent model families, is all set to give Indian motorcyclists the definitive riding experience.

Subsequent to the announcement of its entry into the market, the motorcycle models put on display represent exemplary British engineering dovetailed with distinctive design and looks.

Triumph’s India model range guideline ex-showroom pricing to start from INR 550,000. The lineup will include the Modern classic; Bonneville followed by the iconic naked sports bikes Speed Triple and Street Triple. Alongside these will be the off-roader Tiger 800XC and class-leading supersport bike Daytona 675. Closing the circuit would be the power cruisers of the family; Storm and the Rocket III Roadster.

Tro reiterate its seriousness to Indian consumers, Triumph will be assembling few of its bike models in India. The CKD assembly facility would enable duty savings to be passed on to the end-consumer.

In the first year of its operations, Triumph will look at establishing about 3-4 dealerships with the plan of setting up at least 10 to 12 dealerships within the next 3 years.

except for the unusual headlights (again aesthetics are contested matters) the triple has received all over positive reviews recently from practical point of view

& the 675 is simply drool stuff

@ken: would the tiger be a good substitute for the hallowed 1200GS as far as india is concerned?
    {seems more in the "budget" so asking}

You know what? Ashish threw me the gauntlet by saying that "Try the Tiger. Then you tell me which is the better bike! The Tiger or the GS!" And then he was smiling at me.

Ken, I do not comment or post too much but Triumph got me started. If one has ever experienced riding with their dads back in the days when Delhi roads were empty and specifically on parallel twins; you cannot forget that distinct sound among the trees on ridge road crusing at 80. In-line 4s are good but a parallel beats the pants of them when it comes to a more manly sound. The T100 and the Norton Dominator 650 or 500ss topped my list but this is as close as it gets whose engines and power i Have been more familiar with more recently. Ken thank you for posting - my dreams a step closer.

Since Chennai is metro (though not qualified ), we should be having one here. Otherwise, nothing to worry, Bangalore will come to save us
