  • Hero MotoCorp of India in Talks With Bankers on Possible Ducati Purchase

(Reuters) - The Italian private-equity owner of Ducati is looking to sell the motorbike brand for up to 1 billion euros ($1.32 billion), three times its initial investment, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

Investindustrial, which is backed by the Bonomi family, had sounded out a Hong Kong public listing for Ducati in 2011 but a sale to a rival or large car group was more likely now, the FT said.

People close to the situation told the paper that possible buyers could include Indian motorcycle group Mahindra (MAHM.NS), as well as Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and BMW (BMWG.DE).

"Ducati is now a perfect company but the further growth it requires needs the support of a world-class industrial partner," Investindustrial's chairman Andrea Bonomi told the paper.

"This year, we will work towards that partner."

In November, Ducati chief executive Gabriele Del Torchio said the motorbike maker had raised its share of the markets where it operates around the world to 10.7 percent, up from 8.5 percent in 2010.

A spokesman for BMW said the motorcycle manufacturer best known for its R 1200 GS Adventure enduro and the S 1000 RR supersports bike was not interested in a purchase of Ducati.

Volkswagen declined to comment. VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech, who said he drives Ducatis himself, admitted a few years ago that he regretted not having acquired the brand back then when Ducati could have been bought "for peanuts." ($1 = 0.7582 euros)

        SALA!!! what an explosion

I just pray that M&M manages to grab the share. What I could understand from the statement is the whole Ducati company is not for sale. A considerable amount is up for grabs, right?

          Hi RX,

Yes. Some Investment firm which had invested in Ducati by buy purchasing its shares is selling their stake (Shares). Many investment firms or even investors like Warren Buffet do this. They invest in growing companies and when these companies perform well and their share prices rise these investors sell their stake and make money.

          Slight OT (Rather big OT)
Can I buy this stake in Ducati?? Is somebody ready to give loan to me. Its only 5000 Crore Indian Rupees. I promise that person a 1199s and a Diavel.

I really wish Mahindra or some other Indian company would purchase it. But seriously speaking, does Mahindra have the immediate budget for Ducati?

We're talking of about 77 Billion Rupees and even a fraction of it is seriously big money! Yes, with 7.1 billion dollars, they have the capability but whether they're liquid enough is another matter though.

But, with the Panigale and the recent other releases like Streetfighter 848, etc. Ducati's definitely in its best position ever..

Which Indian will not love Ducati to be owned by an Indian company. If Mahindra is really in the fray its a very good news for all of us.

But sincerely does Mahindra have so much of budget available to buy a two wheeler company when its basically a four wheeler (SUV) company. They have never invested such a large amount even for its bread and butter business of SUV's.

But as nothing wrong in Dreaming Ducati becoming an Indian brand. Go Mahindra Go...

PS: Is Bajaj not interested in acquiring Ducati as couple of years ago when they were on the search for acquiring a western company they were looking for Ducati, Triumph and KTM. And now everyone know where they invested finally

Cool it guys, I know everyone is wishing that an Indian company grab this opportunity, I don't think Mahindra is up to the task, what are they in motorcycles category?? literally nothing. Don't think anyone in Ducati will entertain Mahindra's bid. By no means i'm saying that Mahindra group lacks brand management skills, they excel in that category. If it's about just money, Ducati may well go public and raise the required money. But, I believe this is more like strategic sale, so I don't think Mahindra stands a chance here.

^ I don't suppose you have any idea about what a PE firm does. It is selling its holding in Ducati.
Ducati itself is not deciding to whom the PE's stake will be sold.
It's clearly mentioned that Mahindra is among the buyers at the top of the list. Hence there is a good chance of this happening.
