"We know how to draw a line between Growth and Greed" -Rajiv Bajaj.
Bajaj Auto remains the most profitable automobile company. How did you manage that?On global play, you have substantial exports but mainly to developing economies. What are your plans on this front? What is your plan for KTM, where you picked up a large stake? Then why did you remove the Bajaj brand from all your products? Hamara Bajaj was also a heritage brand in many ways. How difficult was it to make this transition from dumping scooters to becoming a motorcycle specialist? Now that the scooters market has revived, will you get back to scooters? With RE 60, you are trying to upgrade three-wheelers. Given the price sensitivities involved in this segment, how will you make it a profitable product? Was the Tata Nano an inspiration for the RE 60? The Pulsar and Discover have seen a tremendous growth rate. How confident are you of maintaining that pace of growth?
If we are smart enough to create them, there is a good chance that we are up to the task of keeping it going.

What are the key challenges you see for Bajaj Auto, given the uncertain economic scenario and less spending power for consumers?
Stay true to strategy at all times.

We know how to draw a line between growth and greed: Rajiv Bajaj

    --
As usual, we can see how clear Mr. Rajiv Bajaj is with his opinions. There's no dilemma, confusion or uncertainty in the opinion whatsoever. In this interview, he has answered to all the questions in such a way that clarity of opinion is obvious from each and every line.

However, his approach on the product line is somewhat unclear: its ok to have fewer but great products, but how will Bajaj achieve it, by having so much on its plate? KTM, Kawasaki, Bajaj's own twin brands, etc, etc.?

But otherwise, the future is somewhat predictable in case of Bajaj Auto: they have set their eyes on being the No. 1 Motorcycle company in the world, in terms of volumes and presence. And with a focus that strong, its only a matter of time before they achieve it. Now, that time could be decades or years who knows, because that's the unpredictable part.

so the ktm stake is for marketing only ,no technology, but bajaj is using them anyways.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

#i don't subscribe to co-incidence,either it is the rider or the other moron on the road

(:)people keeps on saying add spark to life, bajaj got hold of that idea and added an extra spark to bike.

To start with the twin brand strategy (so to say) is only consequential. BAL did try to have newer brands and they faded (more like fa-DEAD), Kristal, XCD, Platina, Boxer, Avenger, do feel the brunt of the awareness on the "Pulsar" and Discover.

In my opinion while it is working for Bajaj, now might be a great time to work on the brand Boxer and the brand Avenger. Some work is still happening on Boxer with the BM150, but none what so ever for the Avenger.

The sub 350 cc Cruiser market is still a very hot segment... and with the REs reknowned reliabliity BAL can make a quick home run here with little or no effort.

A little bit of revamp on styling, and some cosmetic after market kits and the base of the 180 and the 220cc mill and it could sell in grand bulk.

they may plonk the new 200 engine into avenger, but you are right about 350 cc cruiser segment.
development on boxer brand will be meant for african market imo, people are not accepting boxer here that good bajaj would have expected to be.

To start with there were many brands which are dead (in India) now..
              4S Champion
              Caliber
              Aspire
              Boxer AT/CT
              CT100
              BYK
              WIND 125
              XCD (125/135)
              M80
              Sunny (Zip/Spice)
              Kristal

and am not even mentioning the Chetak/Super series of geared scooters. But it is the learning from these failures that has led to this "Less is More" mantra.

The Boxer is a brand which is for markets like Nigeria in Africa (where there is no point selling lifestyle commuters like the Pulsar or Avengers).

Hmm.. actually the Royal Enfield models are NOT CRUSIERS.. they are "Old School/Classic/Retro/British (1940's-60's styled) Bikes. And that is exactly where the USP/Charm of Royal Enfield bikes reside (even with the doubts over its reliabilty) .

The Thunderbird defintely was an attempt to make a "desi cruiser".. but with the real mcoy (Harley Davidson) available in India right now.. the Thunderbird comes off as just an attempt to make a cruiser.. and definitely not an authentic cruiser.

I do agree with you that there is definitely a scope to expand the small capacity cruiser segment in India with the Avenger Brand (which has more authentic "Cruiser" touches than the Royal Enfield models).

to an average joe, all these machines are cruisers. Just like no matter what the KTM is a dirtybike

I know quite a few people who still want to buy an Enticer (a low capacity) cruising bike, and some of these are also women wanting comfort over power. And this is a pretty sizeable market to tap into! Makes some sense to have the pulsar engines from 150 to 220 to live in the Avenger so that the legacy of DTSI lives on once the D3SI takes over

^^^+1, there is certainly a market for low-capacity cruiser style bikes and Bajaj has got everything ready to capture that market. They got engines, they have a platform & if I may say so, they got a brand "Avenger" which is reasonably noticeable if not famous. I'm sure they would have done their research, may be that was not so promising to push Avenger brand further!!

a million thumbs up to that ! I am holding back on an RE just because of reliability concerns and hoping against hope for a new avy from bajaj.

The RE's are not known to be reliable whereas the Avengers are decently reliable.
