  • Biker fatalities account for nearly 30% of road accident deaths in Delhi.

New Delhi: Three fatal accidents on Thursday again highlighted the vulnerability of motorcycle riders in Delhi’s traffic. While in the first case a teenager died after crashing his bike into the divider near Kirari Phatak in Sultanpuri, Sadatpuri Extension resident Udayveer Singh was killed near Nigambodh Ghat when another vehicle hit his bike. In the third accident, Shakurpur resident Divesh Vats (30) died after being hit by an unknown vehicle over the Sagarpur flyover on Pankha Road. The three accidents occurred in the daytime, between 1.10pm and 5.30pm.

Although biker fatalities are down this year, in line with the overall downtrend in accidents, police say the proportion of bikers killed in accidents remains high. “Records have shown that those on a two-wheeler are the most vulnerable after pedestrians,” said joint commissioner of police (traffic) Satyendra Garg, adding that biker fatalities account for nearly 30% of road accident deaths in the city.

Till October 31 this year, 1,471 people had died in road accidents in the city, of whom 443 were bikers, both rider and pillion. Police say motorcyclists are vulnerable not only because of the way they are treated by drivers of heavier vehicles but also their own tendency to break rules. “Most other vehicles don’t give motorcyclists any space to travel and they have to squeeze in,” said a senior officer

I'm not surprised; just a random browse through Delhi Traffic Police Facebook page, I got my answers!!!

    Few samples...
A big daddy's son tore a Delhi traffic challan in front of 3 cops in Green Park Main Market and challenged the authority. He mentioned the word "speaker"in his argument.

I'd still say...THE WORST IS YET TO COME!!!

Not just in Delhi, anywhere in India, one thing is bikers unnecessarily break rules and ride in worst possible manner and then drivers in bigger vehicles also really don't care if they hit a biker.

In India, life is priceless in the literal sense.

Traffic in every metro cities are big chaos . Every one is in hurry always seems every one works for fire department.pedestrian jumping over mid of the road .Every modes of commuter needs basic awareness .its not always bikers at fault and breaking rules and even agreed yes, they do oftentimes.Personally faced terrible time with vehicle hitting me over in traffic by auto , mini tempo traveler and despite of launching complaints in police in Bangalore they don't took any further action stating me "leave it sir, you are safe".

i think every mode of commuter need learn or needs basic awareness of traffic sense.

thankfully atleast somebody understand that bigger vehicles don't show much respect to two wheelers. and biker fatalities account for nearly 30% of road accidents.........means ........fatalities in 4 wheelers are much more.

I think whats paramount is that people understand that the indian roads were not handed over to their fathers as dowry with their mothers. And laws of physics when broken, the applicable penalties are automatically collected in form of life, limb or at the least money. Simple.

LMV & HMV drivers should give space & consideration to two wheeler riders. But they prefer honking at them & squeezing them in extreme corners or cut them by few inches at 100kmph. I remember an old guy riding a scooter with a woman holding a kid as pillion. A punto driver overtook them from close left at high speed and the old man shook vigorously and somehow maintained his balance. I don't even want to imagine them falling down on that busy road. People need to respect two wheeler riders safety, maybe just for the sake of humanity. But that doesn't mean that two wheeler riders obey all the rules. Infact they are the worst lot of traffic on road, riding on footpaths, not following lanes, overspeeding, zig zag riding, stunting and what not. I know many new riders who just want to ride fast but lack experience & the most important of all "Instinct". Such irresponsible riders are just a pity. And then there are the pathetic trend setters, our so called Bollywood heroes. Everyone of them riding swanky superbikes in movies without even a helmet, let go other protection. And some idiots (including themselves) find them cool too.
