  • Need Advice Buying a Scooter for wife

Hi. Need to pick up a scooter for my wife. I do not have a short-list yet.

The important thing is that it should be Easy to Handle/Ride for a short person (5 feet tall). The scooter will do just about 10 km a day (max) in and around Electronic City, Bangalore. Mileage can be ignored. Budget, about 60k or less.

Looking for advice/suggestions on which scooter would be a good option.
    Thanks

A lighter scooter like the Deo or Scooty might be better than the Access and Activas.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Add Mahindra Rodeo and Yamaha Ray to this list.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Been taking a few TDs for a scoot for a friend of mine and now zeroed down to either
        1. TVS Wego - Light weight, very flickable. Also, fuel filling is easy since the inlet flap is on the outer side of the bike.. 110 cc & 8 ps.. weighs 104kg
Costs a little less than 60k on road.. No waiting period..

        2. Suzuki Swish - A great combination of power and weight.. 125cc & 8.7 ps.. weighs 110kg
Costs almost 63k on road.. No waiting period

-- She doesn't like the Honda Dio (I dunno why) and no to Activa as she owns the same back at her hometown

-- Hero Maestro was also considered but the waiting is 30 days.. Plus I just didn't like the customer service at the showroom.. But this bike looks good and part of the speedo is digial (km reading an all)

-- Haven't ridden the Yamaha Ray yet .. Its specs is same as that of the Wego.. 104 kg in weight and 110 cc.. 8 odd bhp

Yamaha Ray!! Good looking small and stylish especially the blue one (personal preferance) you can try a test ride.
It's a Yamaha and you can trust its build quality.
The downside is that its recently introduced so you cannot find so many on the road.

I do a lot of shot trips on the TVS wego - it has adequate pickup and feels really comfy - but dont feel like its light weight - it feels lot heavier - the one i use is just 10000kms old and its started smoking already and the speedo cable is also not working - tvs service is not upto the mark - i would go for the yamaha eyes closed .

I would suggest you to go for either Yamaha Ray or Honda Dio they are peppy scooters with good refinement and reliability to their name. They are the best handling scooter in the market and it makes easy maneuver for ladies.....

                Hero Pleasure looks bit outdated...
I personally feel Suzuki Access/Swish, Honda Aviator/Activa, Hero Maestro are too big for ladies

Bought a White Activa yesterday from Ghaziabad, U.P.

For 58,600 with all the accessories they provide, teflon coating, full insurance cover for 1 year, etc.

Activa is a well known to Indian roads. I think you should go for it reconsidering your other issue's with it.

The Price without accessories is some 4-5k less !

Hey ladies need some style too...Activa though its time tested and reliable is a little bit outdated. It's best to be used as a unisex scooter.
So it's again a Ray as it has style with a Yamaha reliability. It's a fact that most people who have used a Yamaha seldom switch to other brands, I think that's because of the quality they provide.

Thanks for all the valuable comments
@dinesh.p, yes Ray and Dio are on the short-list.
@sarbanoxley, thanks for warning. Most reviews for Wego have been positive, so will include that on the list as well.
@rxdude, isn't 7.1PS (at 7,500 rpm) too little? But then I guess since I am not the one riding the biking, I will let wifey take a call on that.

Looking at Wego, Dio and Ray. Will finalize after TD - in a week or so. Anything specific to keep in mind? Let me know.

Yes Honda Activa is tried and tested machine in India and highest selling scooter in India but for ladies its a bit too heavy and I have seen most of the ladies balancing the Activa in toes or will balance with one leg.... So scooter with low height and weight is the best proportion for ladies.... As rxdude mentioned person who used Yamaha will always have other brands as a second thought because of the reliability and brand image they have.....

So for ladies its better to go with either Yamaha Ray or Honda Dio

Slim girls like to ride TVS Scooty or Hero Pleasure. While little matured or healthy girls feel comfortable to ride Honda Activa or Yamaha Ray. You can also try the stylish Honda Deo.

I think you should go for scooty because it is lightest among all so is the easiest to handle and enough power (actually more than enough for ladies & older) , pick up, fuel efficiency and cheaper (approx. 5-7 k, Why should you WASTE 5-7 k INR when you have no NEED of more power and pickup? ).
And yes scooty is reliable and time tested (The oldest moped).

As most of the ride will be in cities, i think that's enough of power. In city rides torque is more important than top speed. Ask your wife to test ride one. After all, scooters are best suited for city rides than on highway especially considering the engine capacity of current scooters. I dont think there are any scooters in India that's meant for highway cruising.
(Off the topic)In India the people who want powerful motors go for bikes, we dont have that high capacity scooter culture, so even manufacturers are not willing to introduce powerful scooters here. Remember the fate of Kinetic Blaze!!
