  • Planning a bike trip from Chennai to Thrissur

    Hi guys,
    I am planning to do a bike trip from Chennai to Thrissur.
    I have three routes in mind

    1) NH 45 and Salem-Ernakulam Hwy -via Salem-> Erode-> Coimbatore-> palakad

    2) NH 45 -via perambalur-> karur-> dharapuram ->pollachi

    3) NH 45 and NH 67 - via perambalur-> karur-> koduvari-> kurichi-> palakad

    ( From google maps of course )

    I haven't travelled on any of these routes before, so no idea about the road conditions.

    So please suggest which route would be better.

    Thanks in advance

      Best route - Chennai - Chengalpet - Tindivanam - Villupuram - Ulundurper - Kallakurichi - Attur - Vazhapadi - Salem - Sangagiri - Perundurai - Palladam - Kangeyam - Pollachi - Kollengode - Nenmara - Vadakkanchery - Thrissur

      Chennai to Perundurai - 4 laned; rest is all two laned, scenic with low traffic
      Watch out for big potholes in the last 15 Km at Vadakkanchery.

        The first route is very good. Upto Ulundurpet, there will be a lot of small villages passing through NH45, so in some places, we have to slow down. After taking the right from NH45,(8kms before Ulundurpet), the road is with very low traffic. Sometimes the road is two laned too from Ulundurpet to Vazhapadi. Just in Salem, the bypass is little crowded. But after that till Perundurai(I went upto that only), its good.

          Really? News to me. Can you tell me where those "villages" appear up to Ulundurpet? It's been 2 months since I've taken that route & hence asking.

            oh, I meant the junctions tht will be present near the villages. there will be checkposts near the junctions where we have to slow down. also people will cross the roads suddenly. And I took a trip last week.

              Mulli je, if you think I know astrology, then I don't know. Unless you specify the names of the places, it appears to me that you're totally confused or you don't know what you're saying

              I've been through that stretch atleast 6+ times & know that stretch as back of my palm & hence was wondering where I slipped. If you mean the stretch after Attur up to Vazhapadi, it's a negligible 10 Km shorter distance compared to the Vellore - Ambur - Vaniyambadi - K'Giri stretch

                Im not a living map like you,Sir! No, im not talking about the Attur to Vazhapadi stretch. And even that stretch has been finished and the Kondalampatty bypass is finished too.
                In NH45, not all villages or towns have a overhead bridge so that we can completely avoid the people or vehicles crossing. I was pointing only that. Considering the OT poster is new to this route, I said to him in layman terms.

                  You can consider it OT, but, I want to learn which is that stretch I missed out noticing

                    Thanks for the suggestions.

                    I am very familiar with the potholes at Vadakkencherry so to avoid them i would go through Palakad -> Ottapalam -> Shornur - > Wadakanchery then thrissur.

                    Any idea about the stretch from Perundurai to Palakad via MG Pudur - Avinashi - Walayar - Palakad ?

                    Since i live in Wadakkanchery I can avoid the potholes in Vadakkencherry all together !

                    [ FYI : Wadakkanchery & Vadakkencherry are two different places. If you are planning to go to Thrissur or Ernakulam or Trivandrum or forward, i suggest you take Palakad -> Ottapalam -> Shornur - > Wadakanchery then thrissur if you wish to avoid the potholes in Vadakkencherry, but never during peak hours because Thrissur town will be crowded !! ]

                        Perundurai - Perumanallur - Avinashi

                        Still the 4 lane is not completely done, trouble comes for the pending overbridges in few places, but do able with less hassles.

                        L&T byepass - Take this by pass to avoid getting into coimbatore. Its in good shape.

                        After L&T byepass - Walayar - Palakkad

                        Its still worst with more dust, pending 4 lane works, two lane highway.

                        As aargee suggested you can either take the Pollachi - Palakkad route is far better than walayar route, (but it adds additional ~30+ Kms)

                          Saar...I did not suggest Pollachi - Palakkad route; kindly read again, Pollachi - Govindapuram - Kollengode - Nenmara - Vadakkanchery - Thrissur

                              I didnt get the fact why I can't avoid Vadakkanchery's life threatening potholes (3 km stretch till thrissur ) if i can take Palakad -> Ottapalam -> Shornur - > Wadakanchery route. !!
