  • [Ownership Thread]: Hyosung GV650 - Aquila Pro

This is my first purchase of a superbike. And my first post in this forum too :-)

Have been waiting for the GV650 for almost 2 years now, and bought it a month back.
Done 1000 kms so far. Mix of city rides + one long trip of 400kms x 2.

So far the experience has been good. I have owned (and still do) an avenger (180) the last 6+ years, so my comparison notes will be mostly with that.
Below is short summary of my ownership/riding experience :

    Riding comfort:
The riding position is very well designed, and is the highlight of this bike i feel. In fact after riding this when i switched back to my Avenger - on which i have done many long trips comfortably - it felt extremely awkward - as if riding a TVS-50 :-) The forward controls are as if they are custom designed for me! (i am 185cm). The handle bars help to maintain an upright body position. The tyre specifications are sporty - due to which the ride is stiffer than i would like it to be. Did not feel the engine heat much in the sitting position, as compared to the Iron 883 that i did test ride. Stability and maneuverability are outstanding. I could zip through in traffic very comfortably, while at the same time enjoy great stability during long rides. Also i feel lot more safer to brake on this, than on my Avenger. Same while taking turns as well. The ground clearance is quite good - speed breakers were never a problem. Except when riding doubles - some of the monster bumps can scrape the bottom. The cramster saddle bags that i bought for my avenger fits on this. Though care must be taken not to scrap the paint.

    Looks:
It definitely has a unique styling considering the traditional/classic cruisers - blend of cruiser with sports-styling.
So one does not have to grow big moustaches or paunches to ride this :-)

Not all parts have been chromed - intentionallly not done (vs the ST7) - e.g the radiator - seems like a good idea, as it is likely to get lot of dirt/mud and keeping the chrome shining there would have been painful. However the wheels did not look that great to me and are in fact a turn-off. I wish they still had the 2007 model wheels which looks more beautiful. http://www.bikez.com/pictures/hyosun...%20Hyosung.jpg

    Controls:
Definitely hated the digital speedometer, but i guess the blended design could be an excuse for this. This has been stated in the reviews i read as well : the switch controls look very cheap. One has to go through multiple button presses to view/reset the trip meter. In avenger just turn of a knob would reset the trip meter. The indicator switch also very cumbersome to toggle. One more irritant i found is the petrol tank lid. Even to close it, i have to turn the keys - than a simple press to close. The light is very powerful.

    Speed:
Havent crossed 100kmph so far, due to run-in period. Besides, i am not a big fan of high speed riding. I want very good stability and comfort at 80, max 100.
The bike is extremely smooth with no vibrations until 85. No vibrations in the mirror, or on the foot pegs. I get small vibrations in the footpegs between 85-100. I think beyond 100 may have vibrations more pronounced. Considering its advertised max speed is 195, this is a slight disappointment. However as advertised it has got a very powerful pick up.

    Mileage :
The fuel gauge is slightly misleading - one expects it to start blinking when it reaches reserve. But apparently it blinks much earlier than that. The bike takes only >=91 octane petrol. Something to keep in mind during long rides outside metros. Now here i had a tough problem to figure out the octane in various outlets. Each station gave a different answer. The Hyosung service center said BP Speed should be fine. I couldnt get conclusive data for this online either. Only in Shell they gave me a consistent answer across multiple pumps - i.e the regular itself is 91 octane, and Premium is also 91 + some performance additives.

    Issues so far :

    * Rode to chennai. There was no problem during the ride. As soon as i reached chennai traffic, within 15 minutes engine started heating up. The temperature gauge started blinking (the manual instruction is to stop the bike). I had to stop in the middle of traffic, wait for sometime and restart. This happened 2 more times. Arent liquid cooled engines supposed to handle the heat better?
    * The fuel pump sometimes take much longer time to go off, once you turn on the keys. The manual says it should take ~3 seconds - and engine should be started after that. It has happened a few times that the pump kept running for 10-15 seconds as the signal turned green and created a painful situation. I dont see this happen after a cold start ever though.
    * Gear shift became a bit hard. After the 1st service this is better.
    * The bike manual is not well structured. Even has grammar mistakes :-( Every page is littered with "caution" and "warning" it makes it quite painful to read, and also one gets a feeling there are too many things to watch out !

    Will post some photos shortly.

ps: My first post in this forum so please pardon any violation of conventions/formats :-)

Congratulations, wish you thousands of happy miles. The GV gives the feel of a great performer the moment you see it. One thing I found completely out of place was the rear backrest. Does not go well with the lines of the bike at all, hope you do something about it.

        Congratulations !!

Here are couple of things which are helpful to you.

        1. Vibrations - there are couple of power points , say b/w 4.5k-4.9k rpm and 7.8k-8.3k rpm where power kicks in during these rpms you might feel some vibrations in foot pegs and engine roughness and also around 11.5k rpm apart from these engine will run smooth, so no need to worry.

        2. Fuel - always use Speed or performance petrol and for long rides , do carry octane boosters which can be mixed with normal petrol , i always do that OR mix with speed petrol with ordinary where its not available

        3. Heat - 600+ cc always heat engine , but avoid using normal petrol which will cause engine to heat more than speed petrol

        4. Gear shift - for first 2 service it will be hard , infact after 1st service it will be butter smooth

        5. treat it as normal bike and everything will be simple , just take care of petrol and periodic maintenance.

I own GTR so i know these things ... and Njoy your ride ...

        do post few pics

You don't have to wait for the fuel pump noise to stop. The pump is just priming (pressurizing the fuel lines).. so you can crank the engine and ride away without any harm.
Depending on the pressure in the hose, the pump will prime for 1 sec or 10 sec.

Thanks all. I have benefited immensely from the reviews of the forum, and hope what I share is useful for future buyers.

Teejay – thanks for the tip. The dealer still hasn’t received the back rest yet. It does come as part of the bike, but it is out of stock.

Nagoo – very good inputs – thanks ! I will do some more rides and will try characterize the vibrations better.
So far have been using only BP Speed or Shell Premium, and during my last ride managed to identify the outlets (in Bangalore-chennai route) that stock this.

Adityabhelke – You are correct. The manual suggests to wait only for 3 seconds.

I looked at the Aquila Pro in the showroom, when I switched the iginition ON, the FI light was ON and FI started flashing on the LCD after every 2 second, the sales and service guys say this is normal on the Aquila[ I believe this is not normal, and the light indicates some sensors and not sending signal to ECU]. Can you let me know if this is happening with you bike too? The FI lights get to OFF status as soon as you start the bike though.

pramods - here is what i observe in my bike. once i turn on the keys, just the neutral light glows. FI light doesnt glow, and neither does FI shows up on LCD.
theni set the ignition switch to ON. Now the FI light glows , and also see FI display on LCD - it alternates between FI and 0 (i.e 0 km/h). As soon as i start the engine, the FI led goes off, and so does display of FI on the LCD. i dont see anything in manual stating this as a problem. can you pls point out any reference you have on this ?

Thanks for the confirmation, if you look at the old service manual of Aquila EFI then this is indicated as failure, but the new Aquila Pro has different ECU and mechanism and this seems to be a normal process, I looked at owners manual and there is one line saying if the FI light is still ON when the engine is started then it indicate an issue.

Thanks for the confirmation and no worries, the manual I am referring to, is available online search but its 2009, this is what happens if you refer to old manual for new bike!

I got Black one and have done 250km in 2 days, now waiting for next weekend.

                      Aquila Pro - questions

the review published by yourself is very simple and gives enough inputs for someone contemplating a purchase of Aquila Pro.

I have been floored by the design and the looks of headturner. However, I have a few questions, most important one being the ground clearance. Am from Bangalore and the city is known for its non - standard road humps/ speedbreakers. Will it bottom? Though there is a mention that the humps were not a problem. My second question is more of a concern about the engine getting heated up in lower gears or city riding after having ridden 300+ kms. This points out to a problem of either a thermostat or maybe waterpump. The water cooled, heat transfer systems are supposed to work with no glitches. Having run the bike at 85 kmph there should not be a problem.

Please advise, if you had similar glitches later on. - Subash

I din't like this silencers...Previous ones, which were two as a combo was much better than this single big silencer!!

Can the stock silencers on the Aquila be replaced with after market units such to make it a little more audible.

Thanks. Yes the design is really unique and loved it. Ground clearance is good - way better than the HDs. For comparison - it is only 5 mm less than my bajaj avenger, which has been my commuter bike (+ tourer) the last 6 years. However there is one small catch: even though the ground clearance itself is good, due to the very long wheel base (longer than HD superlow), one still has to be a bit careful. so far in bangalore, i havent had any scrapings, except in one monster bump.

Except for that one instance during my chennai ride, where the temperature overshot and had to stop the vehicle in chennai traffic, i havent had any problems in city riding so far.

The bike show room in bangalore has almost no accessories, forget the mods. i still havent got the rear seat back rest :-( I wasnt too impressed with the service folks either. They didnt sound quite savvy. Also, you cant go for any mods until the warranty period (2 years)

Also, has anyone got the bike registered? I am still on temporary registration (6 weeks since i bought)
