  • Need suggestions on 100 cc commuter bike

    Need to purchase 100CC commuter bike. Hows Discover 100 T or Honda Dream Yuga? I particularly liked the specification and look of the Discover 100T but not sure about it as its a new launch. Mileage and maintenance is also a factor. Plz suggest.

    The FE on both bikes would be very close to each other but the Discover 100T is perceptibly faster.
    Advice is a form of nostalgia.
    Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

              I was in exactly same position as you are, some 20-30 days ago. Please bear with me, as this would be slightly longer post

              First I thought, why 100 cc segment bike when more powerful 125cc/150cc bikes are there... I analysed 95 % of time I am driving in traffic conditions not allowing me to go over 50 KMPH safely. This can be very well served by 100cc bike. Morever, I have car to take me to triple digit speeds far far safely than bike. Second requirement,I would like to have bike with very good mileage . 100cc engine has to put less effort than 125cc/150cc engine to give you more mileage. So I decided on 100cc segment. No doubt, 100cc bikes are lot cheaper than 125/150cc bikes.

              Now my choices in 100 cc segment were Hero Splendor + , Discover 100 T, Honda Dream yuga and Honda Twister. I removed Splendor + ...as it didnt had disc brake, no electric start ( Splendor Pro has electric start but I avoided pro series engine as reviews of pro series are not that +ve), I didnt liked paint scheme/stickering done of Hero bikes. Discover 100 T looks very good in photos....but it didnt appealed to me much when saw it in flesh. No disc brake is also big negative. Morever, it has just launched so not much reviews available. Now I was left with only two choices : Dream Yuga and Twister. Honda Dream Yuga and Twister shares same 110 cc engine, difference lies in fact that engines are in different state of tune in these bikes. Twister makes little more power than Dream Yuga. So from here onwards, it is one's personal like/dislikes that whether one wants stylish bike( read Twister) or simple non sense bike ( read Dream Yuga ) . I opted for Twister for following reasons :

              a. It has disc brake version model.
              b. More stylish , seriously you will not feel like sitting on 100 cc bike. It feels lot like sitting on 150cc sports bike.
              c. Paint scheme is better than Dream Yuga ( personal choice this is ),
              d. It has been in market for more than 2 years so Honda would have fixed all issues reported from market.
              e. Twister has tubeless tyres ( even Dream Yuga has tubeless tyres )
              f. Honda reliability

              When I was waiting to take delivery of my bike, there was video running in Showroom highlighting features of Twister. As per Honda,Honda has employed some of technologies from its high end sports bike into this bike....like long inlet manifold, offset crank shaft, high lift cams which as per Honda makes it out of league from other 100 cc bikes ( I think I spelled all of them correctly ). My experience with Twister has been awesome till now, do post if you need any other inputs on my ownership experience with this baby Honda.

                But Twister has some -ve issues as being reviewed in some sites, like chain issue, parts availability issue, excessive price of parts and poor service. Is this all real?

                  Chain issue: There is no issue as such with chain. Since it is open chain, Honda recommends cleaning/lubricating every 1000 KMs. It is not big deal, many bikes come with open chain these days.

                  Parts availability issue: Never heard of, Honda dealership/spare parts shops network is quite extensive . you can look at authorized workshops/spare parts dealer near your area at Honda Site.

                  Excessive price of parts: Consumables are quite cheap like air filter is some where around 150rs ( to be replaced every 15000 KMs), spark plug around rs 90. Since my bike is new I cannot comment on it. But what I read from reviews etc is this......Parts could be on higher side when compared to hero/bajaj but they do last longer also.

                  Poor service: This I feel is dealer specific. On weekends, I can see bike MELA outside bajaj/Hero/Honda workshops. How this rush is managed is dependent on workshops. In one area, you can find very good Hero service and in some other area very bad service. Same holds true for Honda too !

                    I drive around a 15kms radius including my office. Do bajaj bikes last only 2-3 yrs?

                      ^^ Not really - but Honda is generally known to be more reliable compared to Bajaj with significantly less issues. We have a 1st-gen Honda Shine in our family which has completed 7+ years of service without a single major issue. I'd advise you to choose between a Twister or a Yuga, based on your personal preferences. If you prefer sporty looks, you can go in for a twister. The Yuga is more of a mature-looking bike.

                      Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

                        I don't know when people will get rid of this herd mentality.

                        Let me give LIVE examples.

                        1. Honda Dream Yuga --> ridden by my cousin.

                        So much for Honda reliability. Piston busted at 12,001 kms on the ODO within a year.
                        Did he maintain the bike? Nope. Did he get it serviced? Only 2 services in 12k kms.

                        2. Pulsar 220 --> Anant (Antz.bin)

                        ~6 years, ~60k kms. No issues with the engine. Regular maintenance and parts replacement (brake pads/engine oil/sprocket etc) were taken care of in time.

                        3. Pulsar 220 --> Krish

                        3 years, 60k kms. No issues. Parts changed - same as Anant.

                        Still do you think Honda is better?

                        Honda makes refined engines. That's it. Now, all depends upon maintenance.

                          True. No bike manufacturer can have such road presence ( in terms of bikes sold ) if bikes last only for 2-3 years. One of my friend used to get mileage of 35 KMPL from his splendor and splendor has reputation that its engine will survive nuclear explosion . Ask him about bike service , and he will reply whats need ????

                            our admin antz.bin has one old pulsar which is still in good condition....
                            its not that they dont last you have to a lot of maintainence of bajaj bike but here cost of spares is low as well...
                            money required for maintainence will be same but the frequency is more in bajaj bikes...

                              OK. So all comes down to the maintenance.
