  • [Photo Feature]: Dustom's Turbocharged Harley 1250

Well, you all are aware of usual stuff about Superlow.
Got my bike from Chandigarh, on 3 of march this year.
Since then I have managed 2300km and got away with first service done in delhi.

The usual stuff I guess every one knows, Paint , chorme , fit & finish and nostalgia.
Few things simply do not have a substitute, Harley rumble is one of them, they did not spend several million dollars , getting hundreds of Patents woldwide, specially for 45deg vtwin, crank pin design and valve operating mech.
No wonder despite decades of efforts from japs and others , you can still tell which sound comes from USA amongst several lookalikes and attempts.

But there were some gaping holes in there armour as far as superlow for India goes.
That 99mm of GC was simply too little to go anywhere in India and exhaust provided in stock bike here were simply too quite .

I am a total Diy guy and always believe that if someone can do it , I can do it too and if no one can do it, its always worth a try before giving up.

So past month i have been working on the bike every sunday, and now my super low is a Superlow not stupidly low.
Every one said go for nightster shocks, or get progressives and you will gain 20odd mm of GC, and for authentic sound go for screaming eagle or vanes & hines.
It was like spending another lac buck to make superlow a Harley davidson, which it should have been from the showroom itself.

So here I am with a superlow with 145mm of Gc with stock front forks and proper Harley rumble with home brewed mufflers.

PS: started a thread on tbhp, but guess those guys running a charm school rather than talking automobiles.

This might be a little OT here but..
I was browsing around lazily across the forums at around 1 AM when i stumbled onto this thread and now here I am 3 hrs later, still here.
Did a little digging on you ,dustom_99, on TeamBHP and I found the most epic thread there ever!. Your projects especially the Falcon CRDi is INSANE!!. I mean seriously Hats Off to you. I've just been reading and reading for so long. Its great to see someone in India doing something so ambitious and fun. However, i didn't find anything about it on xbhp other than the 'Who are you' section. It'd be great if you started a thread about the bike on xbhp. I'm sure there would be a lot of people who would enjoy reading it once they find it here. I'll wish you all the best for your future plans.
And about modifying your Superlow, most people here wouldn't dream of modifying parts of their precious Harley's (me included, if i ever get one)by themselves unless it was manufacturer approved. Great to see that when you saw something that needed improving you just got down and took care of it and Tadaaa.. problem fixed.
BTW any plans on pushing the footpegs way front and making the handlebars like the Street bob ? Just a thought.
Please keep us posted on other 'upgrades'.

I plan to upgrade it to 1200cc via a kit from s&s but that would happne only after warranty flashes by.
Best part I like about superlow is its size ,small &classic ,while big bikes are always my dream something like rocket3 , but as everyday ride on crowded bazaar lanes , Superlow is so much more practical, and now with increased GC , you can keep rumbling anywhere you want.

Hey man... saw the vdo and heard your HD's rumble. It seems pretty good. I can't comment on comparison with an original one cause I am a total noob but what I heard was pretty strong rumble. Good job bro

Thanks friend, Now that Muffler and sound is to my liking , Next project is going to be Mini Apes and Engine crash guard. Some Lights and Horn from Vento.
Also did some more work on Exhaust ,Now Hear the American Idle , So much more crisper and Distinct than Aftermarkets.
Some people would like Vance & hines, infact I too like them , But My bike's present sound is crisper and since I have worked to get that sound , I like it so much more.

                    Any way,

That's a h00t of an exhaust note. I can actually hear 'staccatto pottatto stacatto pottatto' murmering out of it... awesome job on those 'music pipes'
                      Way to go!!!

Just one question... how have you gauged the tensile strength of those shockabs extensions? Considering the fact that those extensions will take max pounding by virtue of where they are inserted... it is a matter of worry for me.

I am thknking of investing in either a ninja650 or a superlow 883. But whatever ive read thus far online has scared my family jewels out of their right place.

All Harleys, if n when one goes for ANY extra fitment, make you pay through your nose & @rs3... that's nothing short of daylight robbery.

In that context, whatever u r achieving / attempting is god-sent. I would any day play it safe rather than be sorry & the stupid-low ground clearance on this bike is my biggest scare.

Tsl strength for the material you can get from your steel vendor, whatever material you choose(type of steel) , you can ask him for his procurement reciept which will have a mention of official material grade.
Some simple calculations will tell you how much buffer and wall thickness you need. Incorporate some hefty factor of safety and then rest is experience.

I would say Ninja is a all rounder , and harley would not stand a chance as compared to go anywhere ability.
With HD you get the xfactor and heads turn .
Plus it is pretty nice package, alongnwith there is tons of scope of changing it to your liking and creativity.
On a Harley you never stop smiling , and people know you are coming before you get there.

If you are worried about ride hight , simply forget all your worries, I will get you hooked up, I tell you my friend, once you put the hight adopters on, you will not swap your bike for anything, you would not change anything in that front end even if someone was offering you upgrade for free.

Welcome to 4000mtrs club! HD Superlow , where Eagles DARE!

I am not sure how to write a Travel experience , but last thursday our Plant decided to shut itself down for 2 days Friday and Saturday with sunday to follow.
So having unexpected off from office , I with my office buddies were not quite sure what can be done with 3 days in hand.
I suggested to visit Gangotri and goumukh glacier, To cut the long story short , not many were willing to have a sore butt specially when Gangotri dham is still in winter shutdown mode. It opens up only on 15th of may.

3 of us took the chance , and I took even a bigger risk taking a Harley Davidson SUPERLOW to a place where I already knew not much of a Road exists and if i land in some kind of bike trouble , no one there would be able to attend to a Harley. Specially when every place beyond Uttarkashi gets in Winter lock down mode till mid/end of May.
I did not have crash guard fitted , and havind been to Gangotri several times before I knew ho easy it was to put down bikes on slippery shushy /Icy roads there.

I knew it was going to be special .
When Legend of a Name in the world of Free soul and Rebels was to Bow in front of Birth place of HINDUISM!
The meeting of the Legends was never going to a Usual Story.
A place as Mystical as Gaumukh and Gangotri , where Ganga was called upon earth by Maharishi Bhagirath , Where Lord Shiva took Ganga onto himself, only to split it into 3 streams namely Bhagirathi , Alaknanda and Madakini to save earth from shear force of Ganga's decent from Heaven.

Its a Place where people not believeing in such stories suddenly find their lives Transformed.
Where one realises that the question if these stories are true or not become less Important , And ganga giving Life and livelyhood to billion people is explored.
Where Pay-packets , status and style all suddenly loose there charm and one is lost in the shear beauty of a Sacred Pure river coming into this world through the gates of heavenly huge Ice boulders .Click image for larger version

                              Route Taken
Chilla(Rajaji national Park elephant reserve) - Rishikesh - Narendra nagar - Chamba - Tehri dam- Uttarkashi - Harsil - Maneri-bhali Power project - Gangotri.
Total 350+km one way. Out of which 320km of cruves and tight hairpins.

Our journey was greeted by Jumbo tusker in Rajaji ji, who was crossing the road at about 70-80mtrs, when he decided he was not enjoying being clicked.
                              turned and charged us.
Having being used to a Pulsar , in panic I started a standing 180 only to realise halfway that this was something much heavier, thankfully I did not put down the bike and found myself facing away from the boss of the land!
But by then I guess the tusker was putoff by Baffle less V-TWIN and he halted , turned and carried on with his usual route.Click image for larger version

We carried on uneventfully till Uttarkashi after which things became much tougher.
Cold, rain and absence of road made progress slow and grinding.
Roads in Interiors of Uttaranchal are very different from ones you find in J&K or Himanchal. They are twister , tighter and lot less flowing. its more like stop go climb sort of route.
As very very few lost souls visit Gangotri and Yamnotri , not much of tourism has developed.
Both these sites remain under winter lockdown from Sep to May end every year.
Although BRO and ITBP station themselves at Harsil , but due to very young and dynamic nature of these ranges in uttarakhand Building pukka road is almost a futile excercise every year.
so for most part of the road, they just blow away land slide debris and clean the remaining sluch / boulders by crawlers. They open the foad for traffic as soon as there own trucks and jeeps can pass.

We managed to make a few clips which will be on Youtube shortly, one of them is here, rest will follow . Where Harleys Do not Go.3gp - YouTube

                              Few things Worth Mentioning
                              1. This 883 is an absolute tractor in First gear, Point it anything , it will deliever .
                              2. Because torque is in abundance in low revs , it is much much easier to manipulate and control power to rear wheel through clutch.
Most of the Indian bikes need to be revved to get into healthy torque zone. Problem is Highlighted when a steep slope is to be dealth with , which is slippery or has slush/ice . On a revv happy engine , once the tail starts wagging it does not give you time to make corrections. Once it goes from under you, It goes!
This superlow despite having almost semi-slicks was a lot forgiving and gave time to react because throttle is on almost Idle position while climbing such a slope.
When the rear breaks traction, motor suddenly does not go mad with fuel injection and gain revs causing the tail to get out of control.
                              3. With Increased GC Superlow was atleast as good as lighter indian motorcycles on this terrain if not better.
                              4. I did not hit the underside or mufflers even once, All the chorme is as good as new still.
                              5. No rattles or abnormal noise, except the Jiffy stand spring has started making sound while engaging it. Probably some lube is all it requires.

Few more pics from phone camera,
