  • Suggestions for south india ride:munnar to kanyakumari and nearby

    Hi all,

I'm Pranay from Pune, well I've finally found some time to chalk out a ride from Coorg to Munnar through ooty. I have the pune-coorg-munnar stretch planned with about 4 days left in the bag.So now I'm getting greedy and thinking about Kanyakumari as well.So I need some suggestions and any news on road conditions from munnar to kanyakumari.

Infact if there are any other not-to-be-missed roads or places nearby or along the way,I'd like know about them too.

    Thanks for the help.

I don't know what you ride, I assume you ride something that does 100+ Kmph comfortably to say below...
D1 - Pune - Kholapur - Balgaum - Hubli - Davangere - Chitradurga - Tumkur - NICE - Krishnagiri - Salem - Bhavani - Perundurai - Dharapuram - Udumalaipet - Marayoor - Munnar; after Perundurai, it's all 2 laned road & Marayoor is half laned forest road that is equally bad with overall 1300+ Km in one day that easily takes 18 hours with ONLY fuel breaks
      D2 - Rest may be???
      D3 - Munnar - Devikulam - Theni - Thirumangalam - Virudhunagar - Kovilpatti - Tirunelveli - Kanyakumari
D4 - Kanyakumari - Tirunelveli - Kovilpatti - Madurai - Dindigul - Karur - Salem - Krishnagiri - Hosur - NICE - Tumkur - Chitradurga - Davangere - Ranebennur - Haveri - Humbli - Dharwad - Belgaum - Nippani - Kholapur - Satara - Pune. Pls try to ride to Mumbai & we can congratulate you for your successful saddlesore attempt

So many, where do begin with?

My 2 cents - Atleast...use Google maps to do your homework, before you post any question here!

My 2 cents - Atleast...use Google maps to do your homework, before you post any question here!

I ride a 2007 Pulsar 220,I don't think you read my post correctly,I mentioned that I've already worked out what I want to cover during my ride from Pune to Munnar, routes etc."4 days left in the bag" meant I'll be in Munnar with 4 days left before I have to be back in Pune.

Since, google maps will only show me routes back to Pune,I wanted to know if there are any particular stretches which are worth visiting only people who've visited before would know about.

Anyway,I'm thinking of heading to Kanyakumari and stay a night , then following Nh 47,nh17 out of there returning along the west coast past Mangalore and then rejoining nh 4 at hubli to pune. Not sure about the state of Kerala highways though.

Ok, that pretty much eases your ride then

I hope you've chalked out for Top Station in Munnar; instead of KK, try visiting & riding through Pollachi, Anakkatti, Anaimalai & plan your return to NICE via Wayanad - Bandipur - Kanakapura - NICE & keep 2 days to enjoy riding through Thamarassery tunnel or Vazhikadavu ghats from Munnar to Sultan Bathery (Wayanad)

          Route - Munnar - Adimaly - Kothamangalam - Perumbavur - Angamaly - Ernakulam - Chalakkudy (can visit Athirapally waterfalls) - Thrissur; Thrissur - Wadakkancherry - Pattambi - Nilambur - Vazhikkadavu - S.Bathery; stay a day; S.Bathery - Gundulpet - Mysore - Kanakpura - NICE - Nelamangala - Tumkur - C.Durga - Haveri

PS - Sry that I stuffed out too much above without getting into details as it's hard to type physically for now. Pls do get back if you've questions on the above to debrief

Re: Suggestions for south india ride:munnar to kanyakumari and nearby

@aargee: oh yes, Top station is definitely on in Munnar.

Anyway,I should've started with details of the plan I'd already made.

While coming down,I'll be leaving NH4 after Ranebennur and get to Coorg through Chikmanglur and so on(day 1).

I'm also covering S Bathery-Gundlupet on my way down from Coorg to Ooty (day 2).

From there Ooty-Pollachi-Munnar seems pretty straightforward.(day3)

One of the reasons I want to use an alternate to NH4 as much as possible is because I've been on it too many times, even the Saddlesore was on it.So I want to avoid it as long as the other options aren't very pleasant to ride or wouldn't fit in the time constraints I've got.

I must say I like the Route towards Thrissur you mentioned,I could just as well join the NH 17 there and return.

Is KK not worth it? The only reason I wanted to go is be able to cross it off my checklist.

You physically couldn't type because you're hurt? I hope not.

              ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

@aditya: Will check out if the Jog falls route fits, don't really wanna touch bangalore for the reasons mentioned in my post above.

Good; plenty of options to enter; try the Sirsi & Jog if you can, would be good

Since you're already visiting the places worth doing, yes, you may add, but, if I were you, I'd do the Western Ghats like Punalur, Shencottai, Ambasamudram, Kalakkad

Re: Suggestions for south india ride:munnar to kanyakumari and nearby

Thanks for the help man.I' think I'll stick to KK this time and check the very interesting Western Ghats route you've mentioned on another ride to Kerala specifically.

By the way, sorry about your hand and making you type .I hope the recovery time left is short now?

Meanwhile,if there any good cheap/budget places to stay in the following locations(nighthalts) you(or anyone else) could suggest that would be great.(Couldn't find a thread for it)
                  Chickmagalur
                  Madikeri
                  Ooty
                  Munnar
                  Kanyakumari
                  Mysore

First hand recommendations would be a great help in selecting a place instead of me roaming around.

Thanks again for all the help, its enough actually, kinda feel guilty asking details like hotels etc.

^^^ Nothing is going to be cheap this time of the year; foremost thing being, try to see if you can find an accommodation first

                    Munnar - Suatha
Mysore - Krishna (nr bus stand)
Maikeri - Plenty, not sure which one to suggest
Chikmagalur & Ooty - Not sure if you can even find an accommodation
                    KK - Plenty again
