all i can say is that bike is a freak of automotive history...dang
oke i agree that the triangualr box like thing is what holds the tyre and the frame(chassis) but how is the question and also how does the tyre rotate properly without any bumps..and the last pic also shows that the rear wheel is driven by a chain

that main thing which holds the rim is too large and has a hole in it.
so the bearings are too bike for that bike.
did u see the bearings they look similar
so he made a very huge bearing for the bike and the sprocket is also too big

                gr8 find dude

I remember, way back in '89 there was a sportbike built that way too. Was built by a Swiss guy called Franco Sbarro. It was a technological wonder at that time coz it was a hubless design, i.e. the wheels did not have any hubs. I think it used to be called the Franco Sbarro dream bike. Follow this link. Got some pretty cool pics

Actually, the bearings that he used were from the sets used on Main rotors of Helicopters.

For the ones too lazy tp follow the link given here's an extract from the site?:

"Now for the how. Billy Lane's Choppers Inc. has turned out some wild rides in the past, but this time the guys have outdone even themselves. There's plenty to talk about here, but an explanation of the rear wheel is the obvious starting point. In Billy's words, the easiest way to comprehend what is going on here is to picture that big anodized circle mounted inside the wheel rim is a large, hollow axle. Those machined and anodized chunks of billet aluminum on each side of the bikes tail are solidly connecting that "axle" to a modified and reinforced Choppers Inc. rigid frame. Now, sandwiched between that oversized axle and the 8 inch wide rim is one humongous roller bearing, sourced from deep inside the rotor transmission of, believe it or not , a helicopter. The rim spins around the "axle" on this bearing, and by the way, that bearing alone cost Billy $5,000. Want a hubless custom chopper from Choppers Inc.? Bring a fat wallet."

                            [u]HOW THIS THING WORKS...:</u>

look closely at the wheel. the line close to the outer edge of the rim is where the outer rim rotates on the inner rim while the inner rim is stationary. there just isn't an apparent hub. there are bearings between the inner and outer "rim". the drive rarely gets explained but i believe there is another smaller driven wheel hidden that turns the rear wheel by rubbing on the tread surface. the fron rim is similar. only the thin outer portion actually rotates.
