  • Importing a Superbike in India

    Hi guys,

I need info on this. I am planning to buy a bike here in the Netherlands. Most probably a R6 or CBR600. I wanted to know that when I come to India what are the formalities that I need to do if I want to ge the bike there. I mean the applicable taxes etc. and also the rough estimate of how much it costs to get the bike there?

    Thanks in advance.

Vishdes, firstly you will have to own the bke for a minimum period of one year before you bring it down.
You will get a depreciation of 10% for each year, maximum depreciation being 70%.
For example if you buy a 2008 bike for say 10000 usd, and bring it down in 2010,k you will get a depreciation benefit of 20% being 2000.
So the import duty that will be charged will be applicable to 8000 USD.
If you need finer details, just ask, and i mostly should be able to answer most of it as i know two people who have brought down bikes after their stay in the US.

i have to ask isnt it better to buy local in india instead of all the heachaches of importing

the sbk scene in india has vastly improved over the past 2 years or so

Best way I can figure out right now is TR and in CKD. Otherwise a normal person cannot import it (even if you pay the duty).
Locking the front and flipping is the worst experience you could err experience.

Why do you say that? If you have an efficient C&f agent, and are not violating any laws, i dont think it should be a hassle to import.

There are no major headaches if you have the right contacts. At first i too used to think its a complicated process, but over the years i have realise that it isn't that big an issue to have something brought down and cleared.

The sbk scene in India has definitely changed over the last couple of years. The number of imports you see now is probably 10 times of what you wold see say 4-5 years ago, a lot of this is due to Dhoom. But apart from the R1 & MT01 being officially launches, there isnt much the two wheeler industry has done to cater to the enthusiast.
99 out of 100 imports you see around are illegal baggae imports, which was not the case till early 21st century.
Baggage imports have their trademark shoddy jobs, sometimes levers not being set perfectly, a wire hanging, disconnected cables, this wasnt the case back in the day as most bikes were brough down in 'one piece' on TR, the only hitch here was that bikes were undervalued, but definitly not to unbelievable values.

At similar price point, i would like most others try and import a four year old bike from abroad, than pick something up from the local market. The infrastructure the 'reputed' sbk mechs have here is a joke. They are seasoned, but ae not always bang on with the troubleshooting process.
So basically if you have a chance to bring your 'owned' bike down, and its working out to a similar price that you would pay for in India, do not bother thinking twice. That extra bit of hassle would be all worth it.

                      Hi Fellow XBHPians

I am a long time member of XBHP(Before it crashed too) and never really post anything here but loved to read the first impressions here and other stuffs.

Righ now I own Enfield Lightening (535 CC) and Enfield 500LB (500CC) and now looking for a sports bike in the 600 - 750CC(Suzuki's come in this figure too) range (Not for a litre class bikes right now).

I just love the YAM R6 but it is freaking expensive, I have a budget of 400K ... I am trying to stretch upo 500K. looks very unlikely though.

Man these bikes are too expensive because of 120% duty + Transport changes.

What do you experienced guys suggest ?.. I probably lost hope that I will ever see any 500+CC sports bike to be launched in india in my lifetime say as CKD to have minimal duty on them ( eventhough I am just 25).

                      Awaiting you replies eagerly.

                      --Rgds.
                      Another biker from Bangalore !!

You cannot import a 600cc bike i guess. As per govt norms bikes more than 800cc are allowed to import.

govt norms say that above 800cc can be sold by companies after getting it verified by the ARAI(?)...
otherwise any vehicle can be imported by a person with an import license after paying the 121% tax but there is a lot of paper work and under the table deals involved..no idea about bike sthough but thats teh procedure for cars..i am assuming it is the same
check out some of teh automags this month i think one of them has an ad about importing vehicles..

Why is the man who invests all your money, called a broker?
