    Death of the Cast Iron
    By Ujjwal Dey

It will be a sad year in 2008. In 2007 Royal Enfield stopped production and sale of 500cc Cast Iron fully loaded Bullets. Previously they had stopped Machismo 350 Cast Iron and turned the brand name into Machismo AVL 350 and then added Machismo AVL 500 (in 2007). Outside India due to various regulations AVL, lean burn and UCE and twinspark are the norm for export Enfields with the stupid left side gear shift. But India, the home and temple that idolises Enfields and particularly Bullets (cast iron is a Bullet, everything else are weird things imitating Bullets) too will see the demise of Bullets.

Bullet Electra, a top selling design and brand of Royal Enfield, is almost dead. No new stock of this cast iron Bullets (neither 4s nor the 5s) is being shipped or sold in metros such as Bombay.Hot Air Cold Love: Death of the Cast Iron

My friend in Mumbai has a 500 cc Cast Iron Bullet with lean burn technology.

It is an export model he bought third hand from a foreigner.

It gives more than 30 KM per litre on Highways.

The Enfield company has the skill and technology to improve the cast irons but they are hell bent on numbers - mileage, sales, costs etc.

That type of perfect Cast Iron would cost 2.5 lakh rupees.
Comparatively an AVL would still not go above Rs 1.18 lakh after all taxes etc.

LOOK AT THE VEHICLES ON INDIAN ROADS - Which State Transport bus, which autorickshaw, how many Trucks - meet the pollution norms ?

Electra gives 35 KM per litre on good open roads and sometimes more if taken care of.

I am not going to rant, I am going to save every penny to get a better Motorcycle - NON-Enfield - because when spare parts prices sky rocket I will keep the Electra as a Showcase item - like we keep good paintings in our home !!!

The last I had heard, JP Nagar dealer in B'lore had stopped taking Electra 4S bookings. A close friend booked from some other showroom in B'lore and it was the only Electra 4S available there. Guess this dealer too stopped 4S bookings after that.

My friend had longed for the 4S since I've known him. Had it been a week here or there, he'd have kept longing all his life!

electra 4S ,acc. to may bulleteers was the last good thing from RE(no offense).
afterwards ,they got LHS gearshift ,RHS brake etc in new models.
but another good think is ,india will get a good "reliable" cruiser with UCE powered Royal Enfield Bullet(replica's  )

The Bull needs to be faster & reliable for the modern era like the new Triumph Bonneville.. i hope its high time RE should introduce a big capacity engine like a 750cc V-twin.. they had a plan earlier.. still in paper? any updates?

Can someone shed some light on the differences between Cast Iron and AVLs?

I had an old article... it is outdated now but you get the gist of the basics.

AVL's are supposed to be more reliable ,but noisier ,get heated very fast ,but survive the heat .
                    UCE ought to be different.

Every time you read the interview of a RE official, they say that they are here to create a cult status here, not sales volume rather they want to build a brand, but are they actually doing that by simply focusing on what's in demand abroad. Indian company working & producing bikes for foreign nationals, that's what RE seems to be at times.

Maybe the newer bikes sell, but as per stats the CIs still dominate the sales scenario, so why is it so difficult to keep them going alongside the AVLs or UCEs. When the 500cc CI went out of production, I had contacted many people area sales managers of various regions & even written to the company for any chance that the bike could be re-introduced as a special edition or on order, but nothing is available.

Bullet enjoys a very loyal customer base, but then the attitude of indifference that they have adopted towards their own countrymen or so it seems, is going to take them nowhere.

May be its time for it to go and be taken of the showrooms... good bye good old Thumper will miss you a lot... but lets see if Like Triumph RE can bring some thing out on the same lines but to mention the New Bonnie has never been able to make a mark the way the Real one did...

any ways its been so long time that the Bullet has been in production... so now the time is for the thunderbird and beleive me i am never going to call them a bullet cause when RE did not call them a bullet the called them Machismo and stuff so why should i be calling them a bullet

                        .

                        Take care
and take care of the thumpers that are out there...

how can we expect from a small indian company(eicher) with their majority chunk of business in commercial vehicles got no infrastructure or interest or overall ability to produce something like triumph has done lately.NOPE zilch.no chance at all.

First of All ,Royal Enfield is a *INDIAN COMPANY*.the foreigner was dead(believe it!) and still is based on India.for something like multi-cylinder motorcycles and new techno thingies will cost the total infrastructure of Eicher as a whole itself! R&D is NOT at all their cup of tea(or for the current gen of Indians sadly!).

For India ,this 350 or 500cc ancient motorcycles are still appealing due to the macho look and the brit bike cult status it somehow got ,thanks to redditch.
Here ,believe me - such SBKs and tourer's with 100s of HP will come into production or sales once we had the death of our mopeds(100cc so called motorcycles) which are for commuter segment who still cannot afford a car(nano?).

it will take at least 50 years or more for the death of "moped" industry which caters to the poor(as in poverty) commuters. then ,only we can expect something for biking enthusiasts.

but by 50 years ,petroleum powered vehicles will be rare and alternate electric two wheelers we can expect .

Yeah I am surprised Enfield / Eicher isn't churning out electric motorcycles of 50cc power - many idiots exist to buy such and call it a "Bullet"
