  • New bike-i need suggetions.

    Dear all,

I am working with bank in Kerala.i am using bajaj pulsar for the last 5 years (2004 feb model with round light). My office is 150 Kms away from my home,so i used to travel every weekends.150 kms without a single stop and average speed maintained is around 80kms/hr.

I was really comfortable with this bike as it was a no problem bike
Before 6 months riding became very difficult due to some sound from the engine, clutch and some gear shifting problems.i got serviced and landed with 6000 rs.from there my pulsar shows problems and i have to spend around 1500 rs every month.Last week i found some smoke from the silencer and went to workshop and he said that piston has to changed and will cost around 4000 rs (i dont belive it will land in 4k).i cant afford more bucks to workshop every month. So i decided to sell this bike which clocked 1 lac kms.
    • I am looking for a bike which will be very comfortable and consistant in 90-100 kms/hr.
    • Milage around 40 kms.
    • Excellent braking.
    • No engine vibrations.
    • Can run 150kms without a single stop
    • Looks.
    • Comfortable seating.
    • Great pick-up.
    • Price MAX 70k.
    Bikes in my minds are,
    • BAJAJ PULSAR 180-2009 VERSION (is latest version engine is smooth?)
    • HONDA UNICORN (high priced bike.value for money?)
    • HERO HONDA XTREME (no digital mtr.will the new painted versions last long?)
    • YAMAHA FZ (will it be good for long trips)
    • SUZUKI GS 150 R.(any news)
    • APACHE (REJECTED BECAUSE OF VIBRATIONS at higher speed).

I hear that K&N filter, synthetic oil etc will increase performance. so i also want to try in my new bike.

So please suggest me a bike. It will be with me for the next 5 years.

      Increase your budget a bit...

I would suggest... Since you are already going to spend 70K... then increase the budget by say 5000 Rs. and get a Pulsar 200. And I am talking about the new version. It should give you a decent mileage... and can easily cruise at 100km/h without much concerns.

Why to increase budget by 5000Rs? Coz as I can see you have one of the option as FZ16... Which is in similar range of P200.

Now between P200 & FZ16... I would recommend P200. Simple answer... No replacement for displacement on long rides. Period.

I will not recommend 180.. Since if you can just 5000Rs. more.. why not go for bigger cousin. And its one time investment. And look at it this way... You will use the bike for atleast 3-4 years. So decide now so that you dont get to repent later.

And if you dont want to go for P200/P180/FZ16... Then Unicorn is the answer I say.

Why not GSR150.. Since I am doubtful about After Sales.

All the best for your decision. Dont forget to take a test ride of each option.

Choose between the GS150R, Uni and the new 180.

Uni is the smoothest but also the slowest, unstressed at 80 ish speeds.

GS150R's 6th cog should help ur highway riding.

Test ride the new 180 too.
When everything comes ur way, u r in the wrong way ;)

looking at your requirements of 90-100 kmph average speed , i doubt any bike will give u 40 kmpl .
From ur requirements i Think the nw P180 seems good .The engine is further thweaked and smoothened ,is powerful , new p200 looks .Only thing is that due to clip-ons and rearsets it wont be comfortable .

For comfort wise Gs 150 is good and is a nice new bike .

Fz aint good above 75Kmph and though Rtr doesnt vibrate at HIGHER speeds , it does have a very sporty position and will cause problems if u looking for comfort .

oh yeah ,it is recoomended to shift to synth. oils only after 5-6K kms on Odo

if the Suzuki has good service in your area then go for the GS 150 R.

              • BAJAJ PULSAR 180-2009 VERSION (is latest version engine is smooth?) No, no I don't think Bajaj refines engine like Honda and Suzuki.

              • HONDA UNICORN (high priced bike.value for money?) Yes yes.. go blindly.

              • HERO HONDA XTREME (no digital mtr.will the new painted versions last long?) Good bike if u can live with the flashy red stickers. but we have Uni and GS, better than this.

              • YAMAHA FZ (will it be good for long trips) Engine won't be smooth as Uni and GS. since u need to travel so long continuously, confirm with owners about the comfort. Don't just get fooled by looks.

              • SUZUKI GS 150 R.(any news) Have a look at ownership thread. If u have service centre within your reach, I recommend this bike over everything. 6th gear at 90 kmph and u will feel like flying in heaven.

Let us know what you think.

Your requirements are making me suggest ZMA or R15, but you have ruled out both due to the price factor.
Hence I suggest you go with GS 150R.

I doubt that a Uni is comfortable at speeds of 100. 80ish would be more its speed.

CBZ Xtreme is an option I would look at but the only problem is the ridiculous coloring and decals.

New P-180 is also an option. Looks good, good riding position especially with the 220 clip ons. Mileage should be around 40. Speeds of 90-100 is comfortable. Engine is much more refined than your old pulsar for sure.

                      +1

If you can increase your budget 15k more, go for a ZMA. Otherwise GS150R is the bike for you.

                        Unicorn

Unicorn is the answer for your requirements....
you could easliy crusie around 85-95 kmph and will get an average around 40-45km as i my cousin use to get......super smooth even at top speeds....smoother then GSR150 after 6000rpm onwards according to Bike India...Highly comfortable as you sit in upright position...Excelent tourer... etc....
                        So go for it...

since you travel mostly on loong roads and highways, try to get a bike as torqy as u might get in your budget...

If you can wait, than brand new p200 are just round the corner...

else go fir the ever reliable pulsar 180....

forget uni...it should not even be a choice with its ultra sluggish engine..(considering all the current listed bikes by you)

GS, xtreme and FZ are all good but on highways torque and power plays a very vital role so try to get a bike which is the most torqy in your budget!
