  • Which bike to go for? P 220/RTR 180/FZ 16

So friends, here is my long story cut short.
From the past 2 years i have been riding my Honda Activa (bought for sister, abandoned by her after an accident) for rushing to coachings and chilling out with friends whenever i wished to but now when am 18 the same scooter looks funny to me and i feel somewhat embarassed riding it with helmet and gloves (am a big safety freak). For 2 years kept it in pristine condition, no falls or accidents+all services done by me+weekly washing and waxing.

Next month i will turn 18 years and will obtain a valid DL, aftet a lot of problems and persuasion i have got my dad to agree for a bike for me now as my bday present. How can he understand the passion for biking when he passes comments like we have 3 cars, drive 1 why you wanna break your legs on a bike. Got approval from dad and mom to get a bike.

    My preferences:
Am 5 ft 5 inches in height and weigh 66 kgs. Budget max is 80k. The few options which i have in mind and want opinions of you fellow bhpians now as you are the best guys whom i can ask for.
    My preferences are:
    1. Powerful bike- i love fast riding and want atleast a 16-17PS bike.

    2. City rider- Bike will at max go 20 kms daily- may sneak out at weekends but lets leave it at present. A Comfy city bike with good torque.

3.Comfortable for my 5"5 height which is a big obstacle and the bike should be gizmo loaded.

    4. Should have a good resale, may sell the bike after 2 years or so.

    5. Very importance "Good service centres" in New delhi.

    Options am considering:

    1. FZ-16
Drove my friends FZ-16, the engine is torquier and good and stability is great. I didnt like the looks and instrument console, the layout looks odd to me. Also am worried about YAMAHA service centres and resale values. This is the only bike that i could drive for a long 20-25 kms. Its good but the top end was not as i expected.

    TVS APACHE RTR180
Well saw a white menace 1 day and loved it in that avatar. Have not driven a RTR 180 till now nor any friend has it. The common problem i heard is vibrations which is a big dampener, looks wise its fine and the instrument console has a big list of features which is a pros.

    Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-i
Dont know why but my heart beats everytime i see P220 and says, hey that will be your bike one day. 21PS of power looks heavenly in front of 7-8 bhp at present in Activa. When heart finishes, mind kicks in and says, dude you are just 5"5 will you be able to handle this bike? I can manage the added 30 kgs over Activa but height am very very confused. The projector headlamps and other features are very good, even old gearbox problems are solved.
The problem being its very common but hey i can smoke anyone who messes with me.

In my preference when am spending 75k its
    1. P220 Dtsi
    2. Apache RTR180
    3. FZ-16 or FZ-2

As i dont have a DL, i think no showroom will give me a TD. Would they if i turn up with mom in our Scorpio? Do they come home like car TD's? Hows it possible. I want to get my bike the next day i get my DL so i can finally enjoy the moment that i have been waiting for so long.
If i cant get a TD then you mates tell me which bike i should go for, even though am 18 i treat my vehicles with utmost care and drive responsibly on roads with full basic safety gear. Just suggest me from heart, dont think am young so i deserve a HH Splendor

Dude 220 is the right choice for you! Just grab it! Height will not be much of a problem. I have seen many guys of your height ride the 220. It will just take a week to get adjusted to it. And btw you are 18 years of age and you might have chances of growing up a few inches in the future. So don't worry about the height factor.
Regarding the test ride, they don't normally ask for the driving license. You can go along with your mom and they will surely let you test ride the bike.

      Ride safe
      Cheers

Thanks a lot, that has put so much relief i my mind for now
I am big time confused between the RTR and P220, so 1st vote goes in favour of P220.

Regarding the TD thing, will turn up with mom at a nearest probiking showroom to get a small TD and see if i can get it.
Also, whats the gearshift pattern of the P220 and RTR180?

Pulsar 220 is great. i mean especially for long distances but if riding is primarily city riding, I think RTR 180 and even FZ16 would be great. The servicing of Yamaha should not be a problem rather with Pjulsar it would be. Ask FZ owner for tha experience and they will shed light.

I think FZ is the best city bike available in India right now. Very good gearing and good torque all through. If you can make do with the console, fo for it. As for RTR 180, I do not know much. However with Pulsar 220, you can grow in it and if you take up touring later, its the best. Its the best package overall but for purely city riding, FZ is better.

P220s gear shift pattern is one down, four up. I don't know about RTR180, but probably the same. Don't worry about it, you'll get used to it in no time at all.

And yea, I own a P220. Let me try and summarize the experience.

              Pros:
              * Good road grip, the new tires are much better than the earlier ones.
              * Great power and capable of doing a continuous 80 - 90 km/h without a sweat.
              * Brakes are decent, not out of this world but when handled properly will stop it fast.
              * Headlights are great even in stock form, can't beat the projector low beam for visibility.
              * Gearshift is smooth and hardly ever misses a shift, no false neutrals.
              * Great VFM

              Cons:
              * Engine is not very smooth (still better then quite a few others), fairing tends to vibrate.
              * Mileage might not be what you expect, can be anywhere from 30km/l to 45km/l with a lot of people getting around 40km/l.
              * Service centers can be a pain to handle at times, but treating them with respect and building a friendly relation with them helps.
              * People tend to single you out for a street race, posers hate the P220.

The two disadvantages i find with FZ is the only 14PS of power and the tacky instrument console. The bike will not only do city drives, maybe once a month a long 400 kms trip to chandigarh and back where i think FZ will suffer due to less power compared to RTR and 220. Sorry if i hurt anyone but i think FZ is not vfm for me.

I down 4 up, so how do engage neutral in 220? Slight upward press when in 1st gear? Was asking as if i go for a TD it will look embarassing to ask from salesman. At present my ride is gearless so it will take some time.

Yeah, headlights is the best i want in my bike. In am area streetlights are not also lit and its very dark to drive especially with non existent light of a Activa. I have seen the 220 lights, have a great thrrow.

                Cons:
                * Mileage might not be what you expect, can be anywhere from 30km/l to 45km/l with a lot of people getting around 40km/l.

Well anything above 35 is a boon for me, the way i ride the Activa it returns a shameful 28-31 kmpl and with 4 litre tank am back the pump within 10-15 days. 40 kmpl will be a blessing for me, am a student but can manage 35-40kmpl from the bike. Anything below 30 and i will be sad.

Regarding street race, it will be a big problem, cmon then who cares if i buy the Fastest Indian i have no reason to worry but i personally avoid such races whether am in a car or on a bike.

Neutral is a slight push up from 1st or a very gentle push down from 2nd. I generally find it easier to get to neutral from 2nd. From 1st the resistance of the gear box makes it hard to push just gentle enough to get to neutral, it tends to overshoot and go into 2nd. (Not a bad thing, since you generally want it to go into 2nd.) From 2nd down, there's not as much resistance and thus it's easier to get neutral.

As for the street racing thing. I personally don't do these things that why it's listed under the cons. But the P220 seems to bring out the worst in people who see it.
I despise the ***** who pull up next to me and try to provoke me on a damn crowded road. Then they realize I don't bite and they zoom off barely missing the cars they over take and generally risking their life and others in the process. (Ugh, helmetless roadkill. And it's no matter what they drive, splendors, apaches, activas....)

The P200 is the beast out of the trio. But the RTR 180 will also be a hoot to ride owning to the smaller dimensions and lighter weight. I strictly suggest going for a test ride before deciding. Test ride all three machines!!!!

My offerings to the gods of speed -

                    - KTM Duke 200

Wouldn't recommend the p220 simply because you're still to ride a geared bike forget a geared 21ps power bike that isn't noob friendly. Plus your height and weight are things you should consider when buying a bike that weights nearly 1520 kgs. I'd suggest you stick with the basics. Get your DL first and take it easy. I'd recommend you get a RTR160/Fz and learn the curve first. I am not trying to be condescending here but have seen far too many young rider fatalities. Just my thoughts.

For me, now it will be a very very close call between RTR and P220. Though odds are in favour of 220, still i have a element of doubt. Yes, TD will be done for sure shortly.

Yeah, it does. Somehow i am attached to this bike when my dad hasnt even owned a Bajaj for years Something from inside you know

                          Thanks for your concern wheelspin.
The biggest hurdle for me is if i will be able to manage a P220 as its heavy at 150 kg. Am looking at a TD now and convincing mom to go with me The only little exp i had is with my uncle's Platina when he was in Delhi.

I dont want to go for FZ for sure, i kinda hate the instrument console and tank shape. IF i had to go for a Yammy it would have been an R15 for sure, dad will not agree for it seeing the superbike looks it has

Yes, young rider fatalities are there. Due to irresponsible drivers, cutting through cars. When am in my car and see them cutting through left and right, i wonder whether i would do the same thing when on my bike. Havent done it till now in 2 years of ridin the activa.
RTR will be compact and nice for my physique but heart says its a P220.
If its not P220, then it will be nothing else than a RTR for sure. Searching for a probiking showroom near Dwarka.

I am inclined to suggest the RTR 180 to you but you are looking for resale, which TVS bikes don't have.
If your heart beats for the 220, you can very well go ahead with it. Well maintained Bajaj bikes are a pleasure to ride, though there are only a few of them. Don't worry about height&weight, its riding skills that matter, not size!
                            Quench my thirst with gasoline!

Well Reale factor is very important as i might head abroad in a year or two if the need arises i will have to sell the bike.
Why is TVS resale poor? I have heard that there are frequent niggles in the P220 for which many times one has to visit the service centre which isnt good in itself.
Things like malfunctioning autochokes and noise from rear disks, are vibrations level acceptable in 220?
