Unhappy Indus YoBike Electric Bike (25 kmph)

YoBike/ Electric Bikes Ownership Thread

Guys, many of you may have to consider a YoBike for your kids, brothers, sisters, ladies, etc. (as many of us ourselves are bikers). So, I would like to share this experience of owning the YoBike for about 7-8 months.

Well, my dad purchased a 250 Watts Yo Bike. It was a very torquey machine. It took some 4-5 seconds to reach Top Speed, some 27 kmph (on speedo) & stayed there all the trip. It was good at climbing uphills too. I had some time with it.

I really loved its picking up speed - there was a slight increasing motor sound, similar to one coming from electric trains, etc.

First 3-4 months of owning it were fine. Later, problems regarding reliability started showing up. For example, it started making squeaking sounds from the rear suspension. Secondly, once the rear tyre punctured and we had to drag it, with the thin tyres getting crushed and wheel rims scraping ground. It was a bad & embarassing moment, as my dad recalls.

But it's tyres were later replaced with fatter ones sugested by company. The 2nd set of tyres were fat & reduced this top speed to 24 (on speedo) something ...

Finally my dad sold it off for some 11,000 /- to an Advocate. Phew! It finally ends here, right? Wrong! Read on ...

2 Months later, the Advocate came back fighting with us - saying that the battery had to be replaced. The Service Centre told them to go to Ahmedabad & get its Battery replaced. Cost of Battery Replacement?? A Shocking Rs. 12,000!

We somehow apologised & settled those blames. But that's how our experience was. From now on, We'll think 10 times before purchasing anything that's same as electric bike!

Benefits :-
  • Torquey at all speeds upto 27 kmph (speedo).
  • Very economical, environmental friendly & noiseless.
  • Can stay at top Speed all trip long (unlike our gasoline friends).
Disadvantages :-
  • Reliability Issues - Like Very Non-Durable Chassis/ Suspension with Squeaking sounds coming from them.
  • Stock Tyres were very thin & puncture prone - Maybe solved now by company.
  • Single Battery Charge lasts not very long (say 10-20 kms).
  • Expensive Batteries have to be replaced after some charge-use cycles. At 12k per Battery set, they are very expensive!

I say that the TVS E-Scooty is much better than this YoBike, based on Bike India Review. Go for it! It's more reliable!

This topic will be helpful to potential E-Bike Buyers, so that they know the basic complications owning it! and I thought there is no better place for it - than the ownership section ...

TVS e scooty is not in league of Yosmart. It has a 800W motor, as compared to yo smart's 250W. Also, you need license and registration to ride any electric vehicle above 500W. Yo speed and TVS e scooty are comparable, and I found yo speed to be superior to TVS one.

But it was shocking to find that the replacement batteries cost 12k. I was told the replacement batteries for yo speed were for 8k. Need to check it again.

12k is bloody expensive for a battery

How often does one have to change it? Any alternatives for it?

@ animeher: Yes, TVS eScooty is much better no doubt but I meant that among electric scooters, TVS is best. I guess it's price (12k) must have decreased by now ...

--
@ samyaza: No Alternatives as it is a 48 volt battery made by the manufacturer or it's associates only.

EDIT: It gave about 25 kms to every full charge. We must have charged it around 100 times only.

Battery lasts Only 2500 kms!?

In normal case a petrol bike needs engine oil replacement at every 2500 KM and YoBikes needs Battery Replacement at 2500KM, engine oil costs 250-350(considering normal oil like active 4t, Power 1), and battery costs 12K ,

Conclusion: I will stick to my Petro bike

Battery shouldn't need replacement so soon. It says on their website it should last some 500-600 cycles. Even if you go 20-30 kms per cycle, so 'ideally' you should need replacement at 10k to 15k kms.

Thus, the final km/re comes to be around rs.1. However in case of bike/scooter, it will be more as it is cost of petrol + oil + servicing.

Not belittling your experience, just presenting the calculations.

Default Electric bike from Hibird

Hi guys. I like Electric bikes.Current bike scenario in india is not very good.most bike manufacturers are stuck with lead acid batteries hence the top speed is not much.just around 45km/hr. but here is a news that will strike you with excitement.A company named Hibird has launched a electric bike that claims that it can reach top speed of 100km/hr and has a range of about 75km on one full charge. It is using the lithium ion batteries which are more advanced than conventional lead acid used by all other bike makers.
I was searching for their website but could not find one.this company seems to be importing the components of the bike from Taiwan and assembling it here and their plant is somewhere around delhi and haryana.cost of bike is 28k which sounds really good.
Any more info on this front?
