Exclamation Royal Enfield Bikes Get Pricier from April 2010

"Royal Enfield bikes in India will get expensive from April 2010 when the new emission norms come into effect. The company is currently actively working on upgrading its models according to the new BS III And BS IV norms. “Most definitely the new bikes will be expensive. The new engines will be of a different caliber and that will make them expensive," Eicher Motors Managing Director and CEO Siddhartha Lal. However, he did not divulge any further details about the quantum of hike or the prospective date of hike. Currently, a Royal Enfield bike costs Rs. 1 lakh in India.

The company currently sells Royal Enfield Classic, Classic 500, Thunderbird, Machismo and Electra brands in the country. Royal Enfield Classic 500 is one of the most successful models where the company still has pending orders of at least 3000 units in the domestic market and 2000 units for the export markets. According to the Royal Enfield MD, the pending backlog will be cleared in a span of next five months. The company has already delivered 1000 units of Classic 500 since November 2009.

Royal Enfield plans to invest at least Rs. 100 cr to expand manufacturing capacity. It currently has a capacity of manufacture 60,000 units at its Chennai facility which will be expanded to 100,000 units annually."

But i dont think the Classics will be priced more than what its sold at now. Thats because its already a bit overpriced (but the quality I would say..ooMph)

Guys, Classic 500 and 350 already have Fuel Injection.

Do they still need engine rebuild/ change? Wouldn't an alternative exhaust get the task done, if they're not compliant now?

I remember BI Journalists saying that they were given a stock exhaust and an alternative exhaust for more performance and thump by RE...
So, the stock one, it doesn't match BS3?

Only the 500 is fuel injected. The 350 has a good ol' carb.

You are correct. The price hike does not affect the classic 350, 500 and Thunderbird since they all have the new(er) UCE engine which, I believe, is BS3 compliant.

The news article is referring to the Electra and Standard 350 which had the older CI engines. They have been discontinued and replaced with the UCE equivalents which are priced higher than their older brothers.

I must say the news article was very vague and was surprised that it didnt mention any of this.

May be buddy that apart from the engine part( The FI version has to be tweeked for reliability though its of lowest order as to my knowledge)... They are working on other aspects of even the classics...
Almost every New classic owner complaints of right footpegs scraping the ground...
Backfiring when the new sweeping exhaust is used(though I learnt that its not street legal as RTO has not approved it)...
An open loop circuit for FI which leaves the bike gasping for air at higher altitudes specially during touring...
Air box left open (leading to dirty air subsequently... U guys know what happens next)...
These are few complaints that many Classic owners are facing... AFAIK when I went through RE official forum few had said me that redesigning is under process so please wait before getting one (As I was waiting for the new military green to be unveiled to give an order)

Does this mean that the guys who have currently will have to cough up the extra amount when the bike is getting delivered to us? Gosh! It s been a month since I booked a C350 and the showroom guys have set an expectation of a 4 month waiting i hope my Bullet comes in before May. and hope the price rise is not too much and we get the new and improved classic if there is going to be one!

I don't think You have to pay extra money as you have ordered earlier. To get a clear picture better contact the dealer(My nearest dealer is some 80km ) Hey Price may be a factor to worry and I think maximum of 8-10% will be hiked nothing more than that. But in return m expecting good mileage figures from new norms or atleast very very strong low & midend torque and high end power than available now with top speed increased 30kmph from current figures. Then I wont regreat for coughing extra money
