Thumbs up Hero Group looking for design & engineering experts.

Hero Group looking for design & engineering experts

After ruling the roost in the Indian market for decades together in association with Honda, Hero Group, or Hero MotoCorp, is preparing hard to go it alone. The company thus far was entirely dependent on Honda for the technical knowhow on its products. However, the Japanese bike maker will cease to provide any further technical assistance to Hero after the two companies’ agreement officially ends, and Hero Honda’a transition into Hero MotoCorp is completed.
In a bid to become self reliant as regards technology and design, the Hero group is already on a hunt for the best experts. The company is vigorously looking at roping in foreign technical and design expertise to be able to design and develop polished and reliable two-wheelers in-house.
It’s somewhat on the lines of Mahindra taking over Engines Engineering for all their technical needs for their two wheeler business. Hero group may not buy out such a design and engineering firm, but would hire it full time for consultancy for sure.
“Technology acquisition is a long-term process and we are exploring all avenues, including tie-ups and contracts with foreign specialist firms for engines, transmissions and design capabilities,” Ravi Sud, CFO, Hero Group, told The Telegraph.
Companies such as Recardo in the UK and AVL from Austria are specialists in engines, while the design houses could be from Europe or Japan, Mr. Sud indicated, without being specific about whether the company is in talks with any of the aforementioned firms.
Apart from hunting for foreign experts in the field, the company is already on a vigorous drive to hire engineering and product development experts from domestic talent pool.
In the meantime, Hero will continue paying Honda royalty for every product supplied by Honda till 2014. Hero Group will also pay a royalty fee of Rs. 2,480 crore to Honda till the association of the two companies officially ends in 2014.

First they were looking for experienced R&D Personnel and now design & engineering experts. It's obvious that Hero Moto Corp is now serious about its future.
This above-mentioned "AVL" is the same group that provided the 3 valve 2 spark 125cc engine of Flame to TVS, which has very good mileage and exceptional throttle roar in high rpm's. And AVL might be a good partner to Hero.
Let's see what they manage to come up with. As of now, they have enough time but they should be ready with the products much before 2014.

Yeah! Last time they were in news, they were hunting R&D Bosses from TVS, Bajaj, etc.
And somebody from Bajaj was saying that if Hero Honda want R&D people aged 60+, then we can give them a whole darn list!

Bajaj doesn't understand the meaning of senior engineers, world wide engineering innovation is taken fwd by senior and experienced engineers who would have learnt the design in hard ways. All Global Engg. MNCs works outsourced to India were initially handled by young engineers, many companies never made headway in innovation for them, but once they got retired/experienced people into the fold, the results were immediate. Now all IT gaints like Infy,Wipro,HCL,Mahindra-Satyam (dealing with engineering services) have seniors to make things happen faster and as per client expectations. Their value is very high w.r.t innovation and are paid Rs.1000-Rs.8000 per hour of their time !!

BTW coming back to Hero moto, they may tie up with Ricardo or AVL, if they become desperate they may even tie up with some Japs again !!

A robust design can be bought from some reputed firms who spend day in and day out researching small engines (AVL/Ricardo), but what makes success is NOT just design it is about precision manufacturing and metallurgy of key parts. Hero has learnt well the art of precision manufacturing and they can do better in metallurgy compared to competition, as Hero Moto has highest number of metallurgist compared to any Auto company in India.

Well, its only obvious they(or anyone) will look for such experts.
What we have to see is what kind of a line up they will go for and how they will carry their image.
