1) for looks 2) less weight 3) lower maintenance
Absolutely right on all 3 reasons. Besides, tubeless tires were first tried on alloy wheels. But subsequently BMW brought in trick spoke wheels that allow to mount tubeless tires. But again for road & track use alloys are the best. The regular bikes have aluminium alloys, while high end bikes incl BMW have magnesium alloys which are even more lighter.

Today for any of the bikes that are called dirt, off-road, adventure touring etc, they all come standard with spoke wheels for a variety of reasons. Firstly, if many of you know when you want to do extended off-road riding, you will first drop the tire pressures (In the GS from 36psi to about 20psi), so basically the wheel will smoothly roll over tough & hard rocky surfaces following their profile giving you better handling and less chances for excessive bouncing around and resultant wheel damage (alloy wheels can crack or bend too much under such use). Secondly since the spokes absorb a lot of shock with their movement, the damage to the rim will be minimal, but even if a couple of spokes break, you can still continue your journey, while a spoke wrench & hammer can do the job in most cases to straighten your wheel. Lastly, except the BMW 1200GS and also now the Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 & a couple of Moto Guzzi models, all other bikes with spoke wheels come with tube type tires, so off road if the tire gets damaged/punctured, you can still fix the tube and maybe put a small piece of rubber or something from inside and temporarily fix the damaged tire and continue on till you find a tire shop which would simply be impossible on a broken alloy wheel/tubeless tire. Ofcourse, punctures are easy to fix on tubeless tires, but then each has its own pros & cons. Thats where BMW were innovative enough to introduce spoke wheels that can mount tubeless tires, so kind of - Best of both worlds!

^^ thanks man, so spoke wheels are used for offroading because they can absorb the impact better than alloy wheels and they can handle the stress better than alloy wheels. also if alloy wheel gets bent or crack, we have to replace them, but in spoke wheels we can repair it and also change spokes, so maintenance is easy in spoke wheels. this makes them better suited for offroading.

thanks man, ......thanks a ton..

2013 BMW R1250GS Adventure Endurance bike caught testing!

The BMW R1200GS has been the bike of choice of many globetrotters. The bike has proved its capabilities on numerous occasions.

Now, BMW is updating its popular endurance bike with a much larger engine and other improvements. The 2013 BMW R1250GS was spotted doing its testing rounds recently. For the first time Asphalt and Rubber has managed to get hold of the clearest images of the upcoming endurance bike from BMW. BMW seems to have gone with their usual horizontally opposed twin-cylinder air-cooled configuration. The R1200GS has been using BMW’s air-cooled engine for quite a while now and could be upgraded into a liquid cooled motor on the new model.

That said, expect modern rider aides and other electronic gubbins on the new 2013 BMW R1250GS. The new model also comes with LED headlight among other modern enhancements.

Default Single-sided swingarms

Ducati, BMW, and Honda, among others, chose a single-sided swingarm for racing purposes. Bikes with this feature can have the rear wheel removed much more easily, for tire replacement purposes. Ducati and Honda primarily use that feature for their road-racing bikes, where the ability to quickly swap a worn rear can mean a racer can actually stop for a pit stop during a 20 minute race and still be competitive. For BMW, it was their desert racing, where the single-side swingarm means the rear is easier to pull off when caked with mud without the need for messing with axles, chains etc.
