Default Hero Honda to roll out two bikes

Having sold over two million motorcycles and secured 47 per cent market share last fiscal, Hero Honda Motors would launch two new motorcycles in the next one year, a top company official said.

"We will roll out two motorcycles with over 100cc capacity. One motorcycle will be launched in October-November and the other in February-March 2005," Vice President (Finance) Ravi Sud said.

Hero Honda, the country's largest motorcycle maker, manufactures 'CD Dawn', 'Splendor', 'Passion', 'Ambition', 'CBZ' and top-end 'Karizma' at its two manufacturing units in Haryana.

The joint venture partner of the company, Japan-based Honda, would also start manufacturing motorcycles this year through its wholly-owned subsidiary Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI). Hero Honda is 26 per cent each owned by the Munjals and Honda.

HMSI has been manufacturing three scooter models, which have been a runaway success and helped revive the sluggish scooter market.

With Honda setting up a wholly-owned Indian unit, Hero Honda and HMSI had entered into an agreement that the joint venture firm would not enter scooter market while HMSI would not plunge into the Indian motorcycle market till 2004.

HMSI has already announced its plans to introduce a motorcycle this year.

Both Hero Honda and HMSI said the product range of the two companies would complement each other to avoid "cannibalisation".
