Default Pay Rs. 1000 for jumping red light in Delhi

Jumping lights at three "accident-prone" crossings in the Capital will invite a fine of Rs 1,000.

Ignoring red light - the most common of the traffic violations - between 9pm and midnight at the Tilak Marg-Bhagwan Das Road intersection in central Delhi, south Delhi's Bhishma

Pitamah Marg-Lodhi Road crossing and Prithviraj Road-Rajesh Pilot Marg junction, again in central Delhi, will invite the penalty.

The police didn't give any reason for picking the three crossings. But, taking advantage of the low police presence during the late hours, motorists tend to speed.

A week-long trial was conducted at the Bhagwan Das Road intersection before the traffic police enforced the fine from Tuesday.

"Anybody found jumping red light on the stretch will be charged for dangerous driving and fined Rs 1,000. Police will videograph violations before issuing challans," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

Gradually, the same will be done at the other two crossings. As per the motor vehicles act, dangerous driving invites a Rs 1,000 fine and jumping red light Rs 100.

Late hours if you are getting red signal, biker should go to as far to left and wait for green signal. I have seen and faced situations where car and other bikes dont stop and bang from behind. The higher penalty amount is a good step.

Guys, even I fell prey to a redlight violation non-intentionally. Please read it:

I was going smoothly when I saw orange light at the signal. The most common thought was "orange means go slow"... And slowed through that signal but it turned red and traffic from other side started moving and that blocked me... I didn't run away to left side although I could have.

A Lady constable stopped me and a gentleman officer too (ok, non-diplomatically a "hawaldar"). Had to give Rs. 100, plus a hole in my license, plus a lift to the average looking but sweet spoken lady constable to the kotwali & back...

I never saw her again though on that signal though. Maybe she got posted somewhere else.

Excellent move by Delhi Traffic police, this should stop atleast some people from jumping lights intentionally.
