Tip of the Day

Careful with that leaking water tanker ahead

That water tanker ahead, trailing a stream of ‘precious’ water behind it. Treat the patch as you would the entire road during rain. Even a foot-wide trail of water is enough to cause you to skid and fall.

Default Wobbly Wheels Scooter Rally | September 2012

Motorcycles have ruled the roost here. How about the challenge was taken up a notch? The Wobbly Wheels Rally promises to challenge every rider in the country with the ultimate challenge.

The most extreme spots in the Himalayas. The season of rain, snow and landslides. One tottering SCOOTER. You against the elements. Would you do it?

The Wobbly Wheels Rally will be launched from Chandigarh this September. The rally is meant for adventurers and enthusiasts rather than professional rallyists. There is no fixed route. Teams will have to create their own route from a list of challenges provided to them. There is no ground support on the way making it a reflection of the old world explorers. This is also not a competitive event. The focus is on completing the challenges rather than doing them the fastest.

Registrations are open now. There is an entry fee of Rs. 20,000 per team.

    wow !! wonderful !!

but where will i get a geared scooter from ??
although there is no mention of geared and ungeared, but i think geared one will be better.

they are not providing anything except launch and finish parties, few maps and challenges, then why Rs. 20,000/=

    anybody interested ?

I wouldn't look at it like that. Its the rally entry fee and not a guided tour like the Enfield Odyssey. Its not a price for hotels but to be a part of the experience.

You mean teams pay 20k to be "part of the rally", choose their own routes, pay for their own accommodation, fuel and food ?

Then this is great. Absolutely amazing. Any random guy can cook up a theme, say he is organizing a "rally", prepare a website, cook up challenges, ask people to fork over 20 grands to participate and tell them to roam wherever they want all by themselves.

The entry fee entitles you to the following priceless items:
A chance to pit your wits against fellow nutcases from across the world in the Wobbly Wheels Rally
Access to expert briefings and test riding sessions before the start of the rally
Entry to crazy parties before and after the rally
Detailed Himalayan map and other assorted items to keep you company on the road
Inner Line Permits / Restricted Area Permits for the remotest parts of the Himalayas
A lovely t-shirt to show off and remember us when you go back
What do the above "priceless items" cost ?

    I did read the website.

Unreasonable Journeys will partner with high quality quality non-profit organizations to give an impetus to their efforts in places where our adventures take place. We cherish the places and people we visit and will assist these organizations to maintain the environment and culture of these places and people.
Currently, our association with these non-profit partners will be one of bringing to light their work and the situation in the field. In the future, however, we will be financially supporting them in their fantastic endeavours.
Our discussions with the possible non-profit partners are going on. We will update these pages soon with the details.
Its too vague. Any such event with a focus on charity would have atleast made that part very clear. This one does not. Moreover, I would be much more comfortable forking over 20k myself to a charity (and claim 80G benefits along the way) than go through an event whose organizers are being too vague about it.

Nothing against the event per-se, but to me the presentation looks like someone trying to sell a barrel of snake oil.

PS: Above is strictly personal opinion, and opinions can vary.

Snake oil! A little harsh, don't you think? This is a new format being tried out probably for the first time in India. You don't have to like it but I think it will stay on for a long time.

There are a lot of hidden cost in any event being organized which participants don't get to see. Recce for a 3 week long event last longer than a month. If you have been to Ladakh and Spiti and Kashmir, you know how much you will end up spending over a month of continuous riding. Getting government officials to agree to anything means a lot of work. Ask anyone who has organized even a day long event and you will know how much work and cost goes behind it.

The reason the name of the charity is not listed is because there are last minute hitches. Again something that happens often with events.

The format of the event - no route, no support - is not to cut costs but by design. There is a philosophy behind it and no matter how flimsy it sounds to anyone, that is what drives everything in the event.

As for the price being too high, you are fully entitled to what you think. But just to reiterate, the price is not for individual elements (like a regular rally would do) but for a chance to enter.
