  • After all the hype of launching of 500cc from Honda, will we be getting this instead?

After all those debates, it seems we won't be getting the 500cc. Instead it might be the cost effective 400cc from Honda. I for one is purely disappointed.

Source: Honda plans new 400cc range | Hell for Leather Hell for Leather

CBR500R/CB500F/CB500X. The motor is being developed for the JDM and Southeast Asian markets where 400cc is an important tier within graduated licensing. The 400cc motor shares the 470′s 67mm bore, but drops stroke from 66.8 to 56.6mm.Released to the Japanese press today, the engine is visually very similar to that of the 500 range, clearing sharing clutch and generator covers, plus cases. It seems reasonable to assume that the 400 range will mimic that of the 500s, same bikes, smaller capacities to fit domestic license tiers.

The CBR500R promises to be a bigger, better, but still accessible, friendly take on the CBR250s successful theme.

The new motor appears to be a sleeved version of the 470cc twin in the CBR500R/CB500F/CB500X.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Honda should clue up to one thing: Whatever they want to do, they should do it quick. They are out of time, since their competitors are already lined up with equivalent products.

As for the 400c twin: if the power dips below 40hp, don't bother. Unless they can price it level with the competition, not above it like they do now.

Honda is flooding the market with bikes and all varieties of engine capacities

          250cc, 400cc, 500cc, 600cc, 700cc

This kind of reduces the exclusivity of their products. But, if they want to sell mass market products, why bother about exclusivity!

Now it definitely looks possible for the 400 cc twin engine to come to India.. maybe it might take some time.

But am also certain that if it comes, it would be priced close to Rs. 3 lakhs.. the CBR250R with ABS itself is close to 2 lakhs.

To me this bike looks like a commuter in sports bike fairing - a 'sporty' commuter if you may (read mediocre).
Honda you got the most powerful, tech laden, maniacal bike in MotoGP and all you can give us is this? Where's your heart? or is it just about numbers now?

I suggest you go watch the 500 Trio Intro video on Youtube.
They are yelling and screaming it out that it is a user friendly entry level bike for people of all segments (naked, adventure, sport). They never said its a track oriented supersport.
If you want a MotoGp replica you should be looking at the RR's not the R's. And there is no way in hell the 600RR's will enter India with a CBU price tag of 12lakhs.. nobody will buy it. The 500's are already capable of a 0-100 in the 5-6 second range and topout at 192... more than enough for the Indian junta imo!. Keep in mind.. Indians are fuel economy conscious which is why the 250R was detuned for our markets in the first place.. This is another instance and a result of our own mentality.
The 500R returns 20kmpl on hard riding and 25-27 on any given day according to owner. The 400 should be able to do it better with better midrange torque than the 250.. while staying within the 3 lakh mark. That way it can distance itself from the 650 price tags and still carve a market for itself.

Can't agree more with you Nitesh,

In India its all about Kitna Deti He, and the 400 will make lot more sense compared to the 500

yes, i completely agree, at the moment we dont have a 400 CC bike in indian market ...so it will be good, better to have something affordable rather than nothing at all or something which is too costly.

                          Duke390, CBR400, P375 ..... the future looks great....

I think its a good idea. Atleast Honda and Bajaj are going ahead, rather than sitting and watching the game, like TVS/Suzuki/Yamaha.
Now a price below 3 Lacs(for the ABS) would be more easily achieved.

There are some valid points. but:
Its not about RRs or the top end tech and ultra sharp equipment, 500 brothers and these looks a bit relaxed (not just looks) and regular bikes, it don't have aura of a quick fun bike (something that dukes manages to have with singles) . This is my personal thinking.

These 500/400 twins will be great for touring. And 400 will help them price it away from 650s. Another thing is a large mass of riders in India are tired of singles, still they finds Ninja 250 small. so a 400 from honda makes sense.

By the way middle weight super-sports are coming this way, next year Daytona (and Street triple, though naked got some serious stuff) will come, the we can see many stretching from a N650 or GT650. Its obvious, irresistible.
