  • Honda to launch 100cc to challenge Splendor in the next two months

Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) are planning to launch a 100cc motorcycle in the next two months to take on entry level model in the commuter segment the Splendor of Hero Moto Corp.

This move was forthcoming from Honda, as it had earlier in the month announced its target of being No. 1 by 2015-16. The bike will be cheaper than the Dream Yuga, which costs around 47k, while the Splendor costs around 42k.

Honda is hoping that the better fuel efficiency of this new motorcycle will be the USP for its sales to increase. The target is to price the motorcycle as competitively to the Splendor as possible.

HMSI is planning to manufacture 6 lakh units of this motorcycle in FY 14, along with the Dream Yuga, Honda is hoping to sell 1.2 million units annually in this segment, making it 30% of total sales of the company.

YS Guleria, VP (sales & marketing) at HMSI -

"The 100-110cc motorcycle market is a very large market and with our existing product portfolio we have a limited representation there. We have said this before, we would be expanding the Dream series going ahead and we will be launching new products there. We can't comment more than this at present."
This motorcycle is probably the reason that Honda was so confident of becoming No.1 in the market, as announced at the launch of the Honda CB Trigger.

That's good news - we can just hope it's not a scaled-down Dreamyuga (which itself was a downscaled Shine) or a decade-old design.

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

I don't understand Honda. Every time they launch a commuter, they act as if it will defeat the Splendor.... Then again, they will plan for a new product.
Even Dream Yuga was supposed to be a "new era" for Honda, but...

... maybe another Dream Yuga can do the trick?! I find its design alright, and maybe a capacity downgrade might help its cause.

And no, I'm not suggesting what Honda should do. Because frankly speaking, we're all unsure what will actually work for Honda... Slightly lower pricing, and spare parts' availability will definitely help, but "the Question" still remains... will it be enough to beat Splendor & Discover?

I have a doubt; If they rename shine and unicorn as dream 125 and 150, can they beat discover's Indian sales figure?

No manufacturer will be able to beat the historical records set by the CD100/Splendor derivatives. The sole reason being erstwhile Hero Honda's timing. They entered the market at a time when the only players in the market were fuel guzzling 2-strokes. They revolutionized the market with their fuel efficiency and their silent, smooth engines (comparatively speaking). They had no competition to face and sold in millions.

Today, the market is entirely different. No manufacturer has a market-changing product in their portfolio. May be an all-electric bike (not a scooter!) with performance matching a regular 150cc bike at an affordable price range (60-70K) will change the market as drastically as HH did.

Honda is trying to undo something it had helped in developing.
recently my uncle from rural area was getting a new bike
              me-go for dream yuga
uncle-splendor is the best,it has got better mileage
me-no dream yuga has got better mileage and better power
              uncle-but still splendor is superior
              me-*facepalm*

splendor has got hordes of indian who trust it just because its a splendor.they wont hear anything else...hmmmm..splendor would make a good election symbol then

That was a rumour which ended up as a flop joke! The fact is, small diesel engines are not at all viable. And with diesel prices all set to hit the roof, the overhead cost is not justifiec

5 years is the minimum time required for any model already launched or "will be launched" to beat splendour .... reliability, trust, faith needs year to build.

totally agree with you....honda is even thinking of beating hero in numbers and they think can snatch hero's crown by 2016 which according to me is just a joke because its not possible to beat hero with in 3 years. Interestingly they have forgotten bajaj completely like they have captured number 2 position for lifetime, however I strongly feel bajaj is just a shade away from honda or you can say one good product in place of platina or a refreshed platina can do the trick.

+1. The market is no longer what it used to be in the eighties. A simple analogy:

1980: A bride's father looks for an "engineer" who is working in some company and looks decent.
2013: A bride's father looks for somebody who has graduated from IIM-A, who works in a Fortune 500 company, who is posted on-site in the US and earns 7-digit monthly salaries.

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

You mean "downgraded", right? If HMSI are really sticking to their manifesto and launching a new product every quarter then we, the people, are all eyes
