Default Kinetic to launch 7 Italjet Scooters in 04

PUNE: Of the seven Italjet scooters that Kinetic Motor (KMCL) is set to launch, some like the 250 cc Jupiter, could easily pass off as performance bikes. “The 250 cc Jupiter is intended primarily for the international market and we have already tied up a distributor in the US,” Sulajja Firodia Motwani, joint MD, Kinetic group, said, showing KMCL’s line-up.

KMCL hopes to launch the Italjet scooters, ranging from 50 cc scooterettes to the performance segment of 250 cc, by September-October to catch the festive season. It is awaiting ARAI homologation clearances for the two models it intends to launch, Ms Motwani said.

“We will bring in two products initially — Jet Set (called Kinetic Euro in the domestic market) and Millenium. We hope the homologation process is completed before the festive season, so we can begin seeding the market,” she said.

The seven-model Italjet line-up includes the Formula 125, 22 hp Dragster, Torpedo 4T, Jet Set, Velocifero, Millenium and Jupiter. These are the international names, and may change for the Indian market.

KMCL has bought complete manufacturing rights for the domestic market from the Italian manufacturer to be able to sell them as Kinetic products.

If exports are routed through Italjet, as they will be for the European market, KMCL will pay royalty to Italjet since they will be badged Italjet products. However, when KMCL exports on its own, it will badge them as Kinetic. This will be for markets in the US and Australia, where KMCL will export directly.

Ms Motwani said the Italian scooter manufacturer has exited these products, hence, whatever they need will have to be sourced from KMCL. Italjet sold 50,000 of these in the European markets last year

These are not discarded products from Italjet. For instance, the Millenium was launched four years ago in 1999,” she said.

KMCL has drawn up a competitive pricing policy for these scooters. The scooterettes with engines under 100 cc, are expected to be priced around Rs. 40,000 and the scooters, whose engines will be over 100 cc, will be priced around Rs 50,000. This pits the scooters against performance bikes, price-wise.

Jet Set, which will enter the market as the Kinetic Euro, will come in 125 and 135 cc versions. It is positioned as a family scooter and is targeted at the domestic market. Millenium also comes in two engine variants, 125 and 150 cc, which KMCL is positioning for the domestic and international markets.

The Formula 125 scooter is intended for both domestic and international markets, while the Dragster, a 22 hp scooter, is not likely to be seen in the domestic market. These two scooters are determinedly macho; the Dragster going for the ‘exposed’ look of a bike.

Ms Motwani accepted that Dragster has limited appeal. With their macho looks, these are targeted at college-going males since scooterettes are regarded as a feminine segment.

Velocifero, a 92 cc scooterette, and Torpedo, a 150 cc scooter, which can also support power packs from 50 to 150 cc, sport retro looks.

Millenium will come in 125-150 cc versions, and is expected to be a category maker. It is intended for the domestic and international markets.
Refuting the impression that KMCL has only Italjet products, Ms Motwani pointed out the Kinetci Zing 80, which it has recently upgraded from 65 cc. It has also replaced the Nova 115 with the Nova 135, positioned against Honda’s Activa and priced at Rs 36,000 ex showroom in Mumbai.

Yeah it has been discussed before. In fact as long back as Jan 04 in this thread

http://www.xbhp.com/forum/topic.bike?TOPIC_ID=2173

And here's another thread on the same topic

http://www.xbhp.com/forum/topic.bike?TOPIC_ID=3272

Also, initially, Kinetic is going to be launching only 2 of the 7 scooters ie Jetset & millennium. Some of the others may never be launched. See the link below for more details

right said biek freak. I guess market is not ripe for all of them anyway. But never know, Kinetic might be interested in launching just a couple as a CKD like Aquila and comet
