Default FINALLY... Harley to reach India

First we heard about exporting sea food to get Harleys in India. Then there were reports of trading Indian mangoes for the US cruiser. Finally the iconic bike manufacturer is geared up to roll on Indian roads.

The Milwaukee based motorcycle maker had received a major encouragement two years ago when the emission norms were relaxed and the US bikes were given the green signal by the Indian Government. In return US had to allow import of Indian mangoes. However, the bike maker had to reconsider its Indian plans because of the implausibly high import duties on completely built units (CBU).

But you will have to wait till end of this year as Harley Davidson is giving the final touches to its India launch plans, according to sources close to the firm. Most of the big bad choppers will be imported as CBU units, while smaller models like the Sportster 883 will gradually be imported as complete knocked down (CKD) units, making India the third country in the world after Singapore and Brazil to have an assembly line for the American bike maker outside the US.

Sources close the company said that Harley Davidson has got clearances from the government and is exploring to make Gurgaon it's base in India. Talking about the line-up he revealed that initially the Fatboy and another cruiser will be imported as a CBU with a price tag of over Rs 20 lakh due to an astounding 100% plus import duty, followed by the more affordable Sportster 883 which would be imported as CKD and then assembled here.

Bob Klein, director, corporate communications, Harley-Davidson Motor Company said that the company is exploring all options for a possible entry into India. Harley-Davidson continues to lay the groundwork for possible entry into the Indian market and is exploring options for doing so. The firm will have more details at such time as there is information to announce.

News Approved.

@Utpal: The Honda's upcoming scooter thingy is already running on another thread, and hence removed from this particular topic. Posted the Harley picture instead.

When we can have Ducatis, why not Harleys?
IMO, the H-D brand has more following in India than the Ducatis. Wont be amazed if the American company is able to sell a hundred bikes an year here. The CKD bikes will be interesting to see
PS : i hope HD get their riding gear / accessories to India as well. I am a big fan of their stuff. If not the bike, i can still buy their branded stuff

Imagine Leh Ladakh and all those Himalayan trips on a Harley !!
It'd be a sight !!
Lets c if the Harlays breach into a typical Enfield bastion !!

Yeah. It sure is great news for the biking community. They say that they will sell 100 a year? At 2 Million Rupees!!! I have my doubts. There will be some people who will buy. Who will be riding it once a month. Hence not much visibility!

We are a group of dedicated passionate riders in xBhp. Please raise your hands who would be going to put down 2Million INR to buy a HD!
