NFO announces Voice Of The Customer Awards 2003 for motorcycles

Company press release, October 9, 2003
New Delhi

First the customers evaluated them. Now it was a momentous evening for the motorcycle manufacturers – the same customers handed-over the coveted trophies to the highest ranked motorcycles of the 2003 NFO Voice of The Customer Awards.

NFO Automotive’s inaugural 2003 India Motorcycle Total Customer Satisfaction Study (TCS) ranked motorcycles in their respective segments for Total Customer Satisfaction. The models with the highest customer satisfaction ratings were: Hero Honda CD 100 SS in the 'Standard' segment; Hero Honda Splendor in the 'Executive' segment; Bajaj Pulsar in the 'Premium' motorcycle segment and Royal Enfield Bullet Electra in the niche ‘Cruiser' segment.

At a glittering awards function held at New Delhi today, the awards were received by Mr Pawan Munjal, Managing Director, Hero Honda Motors Ltd. for the No.1 Bike in the Standard and Executive segments and by Mr Sidhartha Lal, CEO of Enfield Motors for the No.1 Bike in the Cruiser segment and by Mr Nitin Kochar of Bajaj Auto for the No.1 Bike in the Premium segment.

The 2003 Motorcycle TCS is the third syndicated study introduced by NFO Automotive in India following the 2002 four-wheeler TCS and 2003 Dealer Satisfaction Study. NFO Automotive is a speciality division within NFO WorldGroup, a leading global market research and consulting firm and now a part of the TNS Group.

The Motorcycle TCS study is based on responses from over 5,400 motorcycle owners surveyed this year based on their experience in the first three years of ownership. Analysis focussed on the performance of 30 motorcycle models (including model variants) in the key areas of sales satisfaction, product quality, performance and design, after-sales service, brand image and cost- of- ownership. The Total Customer Satisfaction Study is based on NFO TRI*M, NFO WorldGroup's proprietary Stakeholder Management System. The NFO TRI*M Index score provides a measure of the relationship strength that a given model or brand enjoys with its customers.

The Total Customer Satisfaction Study was conducted in the various motorcycle segments to provide comparisons among similar groups of motorcycles. Customer evaluations were captured at three distinct ownership periods: 1 to 6 months, 7 to 18 months and 25 to 36 months respectively. This helped in understanding the difference in satisfaction levels during initial ownership, in-warranty and post-warranty ownership periods. The motorcycle TCS study was conducted early this year amongst customers in 16 centers including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Delhi & NCR, Gorakhpur, Hyderabad, Indore, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Mumbai, Pune and Surat.

Said Rajeev Lochan – General Manager NFO Automotive. "The industry average TRI*M index score is 77 indicating that most manufacturers enjoy a reasonably strong relationship with their customers. The overall score is impacted by high ratings on brand image and product related measures, while satisfaction with after-sales service and cost of ownership is relatively weak."

Hero Honda achieved the most consistent TCS performance with three of its models CD100 SS, Splendor & Passion recording a score of above 80. In the premium segment that has high expectations from customers the Bajaj Pulsar rates well across all aspects of ownership experience and particularly in the area of vehicle styling. In the niche Cruiser segment the Royal Enfield Bullet Electra rated well on areas related to performance and design and cost of ownership.
