  • Honda to exit geared scooter segment in India

NEW DELHI: Japanese two-wheeler major Honda said it will exit the geared scooter market in India and phase out its 150 cc model-- Eterno-- as the company plans to focus on the gearless segment.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), the fully owned Indian subsidiary of the Japanese firm, today launched a new version of its gearless scooter Activa, priced at Rs 39,800 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

"We will stop producing Eterno. We will not stay in this segment (geared scooter). Eterno will be phased out," HMSI President and CEO Shinji Aoyama told reporters here.

The company would focus on gearless scooters in the future and with the launch of the new Activa, HMSI is looking at a total of 18 per cent growth in its two wheeler sales in the next fiscal, 2009-10.

Eterno was selling only about 40,000 units a year, which was very small, Aoyama said.

Asked if the company would bring in a new model to fill the vacuum after withdrawal of Eterno from the market, Aoyama said: "We will surely compensate with a substitute, but at the moment the new Activa is enough to take the challenge as it will give 15 per cent increased mileage."

Besides, HMSI is expecting to record 17 per cent growth in the current financial year with a total sales of 10.6 lakh units.

"The Indian two-wheeler market witnessed a growth of five per cent in the current fiscal, whereas HMSI grew by about 17 per cent in the same period and we expect to keep this momentum," Aoyama said.

"For the next fiscal, 2009-10, we have set a sales target of 12.5 lakh units in the Indian market, of which 7.4 lakh will be scooters and 5.1 lakh will be motorcycles," Aoyama said.

Talking about the new 110cc Activa, Aoyama said the company had developed the model keeping in mind the changing needs of Indian customers.

"We are aiming at further expansion of scooter market with new Activa and have set challenging plan to sell 5.5 lakh new Activa in 2009-10," HMSI Head (Sales and Marketing) N K Rattan said.

Rattan said the company will increase add new 100 outlets in the next fiscal to take the total to 750.

Earlier HMSI had said it would invest Rs 300 crore in the next three years for expanding its production capacities, besides launching new models.

The company, which has a production facility at Manesar, has so far invested Rs 900 crore in the country.

HMSI has also planned to introduce a 100cc bike targeting the mass market within next one year, which would be targeted at young customers, Aoyama said.

Not a great decision. Just my personal view, but Honda, when did you last update the Eterno decently?
If you expect people to pay for same old design, then you are mistaken... You want a product to sell well, put in efforts first!

Regarding the Product, it's not everyday I see a Scooter, capable of doing a wheelie, touching 85 kmph, and still delivering 50+ Mileage ...
My friend has one, and I know just how rocking it is!

BTW just my views, object peacefully only please, if you do ...

They had already cut off the supply of Eterno in south. I couldn't get on Eterno when I tried to get one last year. Honda people said that they don't have demand in South.

do you ride an Eterno, my dad owns one, ask people who own one, its a great scooter, if you have ridden any scooters at all, think before come out with such comments, ride a geared scooter and an automatic transmission scooter and you will know, it does sell in less numbers, but it was a lot better than the Chetaks and Vespas we've had, have some respect or research a little before you come out with such statements, its sad that Honda is going to stop producing it !!

Eterno is a one of its kind. Fantastically designed, very balanced and very reliable scooter...

But then, who wants to sell one if the demand is like 40K units a year?

Most people who went for Eterno over the Activa is for the better average and then the better response the geared scoot gives. Honda's take now is that the new Activa 110cc would deliver 15% better average and with a higher cc engine would slightly give better response...

I find it acceptable... but still feel bad for the Eterno!

I have said this before: Business is all about making Maximum Profitability..

Every product has its own life span.. and Eterno has completed its journey.

Maybe an attractive color job, like Dio should have done the trick to keep it alive ...

I still remember, my friend's Eterno, did wheelies on it, was a real reliable machine, still gave 50+ Mileage, and performance was like, great!

Personally, I don't see a reason it should expire, no reason at all ... Good Updates could have saved it...

A sales figure of 40K scooters when Honda was the only scooter (geared) manufacturer in India does say something!! If you dont profit from what you sell, its poor business sense that you continue selling it. Although I know there were many takers for these, the numbers are reducing. Maybe because the choice was limited. No LML, no Bajaj NX5 (name's NX5 right?) to compete the Eterno, so maybe scooter preferring people shifted over to 100cc bikes instead. So I dont think it was a bad move.

No offense to the scooter. I've ridden it, and I hated every bit of it. Maybe its young blood. Maybe when I get older, I'd prefer a scooter over a bike. If you look at it from that POV, its the best you'd ever got!

RIP Eterno. People will nevertheless miss you!
                          You get the point?? :D

There is still a certain section of our population that loves geared scooters, which was the reason for the Chetak thriving. (Read Chetak&Vespa Uncles). But this is both good&bad.
Bad is for those who like scooters, but want gears in them. They may not be satisfied with the scooterettes available. Now that the Chetak&Eterno are also not available, they might feel a bit deprived riding Activas etc.
Good thing is: Now all scooters will be automatic! No one will say those are for girls only, these (geared scooters) are for men.
