TVS and BMW Motorrad's first motorcycle to be a 250cc

    Source : Overdrive

Synergising strategies have been quite generously adopted by the automotive industry. The idea is that if you sell the same product under different brands with minor tweaks to give them separate identities, the product wins a wider reach at a fraction of the cost of developing another all-new model. Another advantage is division of skill sets during product development.

TVS Racing began developing a 250cc motorcycle that company sources tell us will be launched by the end of this financial year. With BMW entering the picture, expect further development to be carried out in Berlin if the prototype results in the first joint product from the co-op. Company officials say that a new model from the co-op is at least 18 months away, but if the already in-the-works 250cc motorcycle is up to BMW standards, expect a quicker launch date.

That is good news. I'm sure BMW and TVS will both benefit from this venture and hopefully we soon see what they come up with...

BMW's attempt to enter the <500cc market in Europe with their C1 enclosed scooters (125/200cc) was, sadly, short-lived and far from a success story. Its odd looks put off most 'classic' motorcyclists. But, looks aside, it was an incredibly innovative and practical new concept aimed at urban riders and commuters. In most EU countries you could ride the C1 without a helmet, safely and legally...! Plus it came with a big storage box and, in place of the storage box, there was the option of a pillion seat kit!

I'm not saying that there should or will be another C1..., but it sounds like there's more innovation on its way, and it's happening in India, on a bigger level and in a much bigger market. Exciting times for Indian motorcyclists....

For those who haven't seen it, this was the electric version of the C1 which came out in 2009. (Personally I don't think it looks bad at all, better than the petrol version.)

Well this is probably what TVS is talking about. But I hardly think that it is anyway near the BMW standards. Lets wait and see...Click image for larger version

When the first product is out, probably 250cc as rumored, i would like see how this bikes refinement fares with Honda. I mean BMW vs Honda in lower cc segments. If its good then we can expect some rubbing off effect on TVS products.

Does anyone else remember the TVS Velocity concept that was showcased a long time back? It was an orange colored street fighter

Maybe that could be our model?

Bajaj currently has got 47% stake in KTM..

..regardless of the stake there is an agreement/alliance between KTM and Bajaj (signed in 2007 by the two) that they'll co-develop and manufacture motorcycles in India and sell them everywhere. Doesn't it sound somewhat similar to the current TVS-BMW agreement..??

Anyone with slight interest in Motocycles will always draw parallel the current TVS - BMW agreement with the Bajaj-KTM one.

Thats not exactly Bro... whatever the move by TVS people here & outside speak that TVS following bajaj!

seems I'm so late to reply

Coming to the topic, as the sources say TVS & BMW would co-develop motorcycles in the range between 250cc to 600cc. we dont know whats going to happen.

whereas with the KTM Bajaj relationship. KTM actually develops 125cc to 1200cc bikes and since bajaj has stakes it would use the design or fetch design drawing for mass manufacturing for both KTM & bajaj brands(now Duke 200 & KTM 200 engine based 200Ns). actually bajaj has its hands only in cost effective manufacturing of KTM designs. not the technical thing
thats quite evident from pulsar 220 being low powered(as is based on Kawasaki platform) than 200NS & 4 valved 135cc bikes which differ from 4 valved KTM 125.

One more thing is that BMW didn't come here to India targeting TVS. but BMW went to all desi manufacturers plants seeking alliance. If BMW got inspired with hero or Bajaj, it would have made an alliance with them.

TVS was also looking for some foreign collaboration(triumph/aprillia) to develop above 250cc bikes(& currently TVS developing 250cc on their own).

what actually happened is, TVS with its superb manufacturing line, racing expertise, commitment to engineering & the best in country R&D works. TVS had impressed BMW much than any other desi manufacturer & finally won its alliance. it may fell I'm exaggerating, but this is what happened & BMW officials were so impressed after seeing the engine assembly unit of TVS

Now the question is, will TVS engineers work with BMW engineers in both technical & manufacturing front for motorcycles in between 250cc to 600cc. or go by bajaj way by looking after cost effective manufacturing of BMW engineered bikes.

Its too early to judge, that TVS follows bajaj strategy.

Heard that bajaj is fiercely looking to buy the controlling stake of KTM, if it does. I feel the bajaj branded bikes would have an edge over KTM branded bike.
truth is stranger than fiction, everywhere!!

Some more excerpts to sustain the momentum of hope for touring enthusiasts:

Sub-500cc BMW by 2015 - Motorcycle news: New bikes - Visordown

Talks were there about a Chinese manufacturer who produces tourer bikes, presumably ideal for Indian condition. Folks expressed their sadness for the unavailability of a capable tourer in the Indian market (I know Karizma personally, so let's not go there!)
If this news materializes, I guess hardcore Indian tourers will go bonkers - plenty to speculate, namely engine size, cylinders, price, power output, and comfort etc. But before we roll up sleeves, let's wait for an official announcement.

The scoop is a 350cc enduro is confirmed and a 500c roadster is on its way. An online auto-mag reports that BMW has already sent 6 bikes to TVS in India for testing and supplier setup.
