  • Thumping to Yelagiri, Tamilnadu

    Dear friends,

If Dusshera was the main course for this festive season,we planned for the Diwali's to be better. We, myself & my better half. So, a trip to Madikeri, Coorg was on the cards & likewise, cottage was booked well in advance. Yet what could have been a thumping weekend turned out to be spoiltsport as torrential rain played havoc over all the three southern States of India during that period. Trip got cancelled last minute. Made the estate owner happy with my advance; felt like hell.

But, one more week & here we were, back on two wheels again, riding to a destination far off. This time we rode to Yelagiri (Elagiri, as the Sign Boards read), a mountain town in Northern Tamilnadu. Weather was nice, clear blue sky strung with stratus clouds, intermittent showers of warm sunrays alternating with some cool breeze blowing along. The road was even better, being part of the Golden Quadrilateral. The direction was south-east from Bangalore. Route via Hosur, Krishnagiri towards Vellore/Chennai.

    Road Trip to Yelagiri, Tamilnadu
    Total Distance : 350kms both-ways from Bangalore.
    Date/Day : 13th November, 2010 / Saturday

As usual, the routine bags were packed & loaded on the machine the night earlier. But we were deciding on the snacks. Since it was a rapid plan, my wife didn't get the time to shop, leaving us to go for shopping late evening on Friday after I returned from Office. Result, went to sleep late (something I don't like on the day before the ride). Hence, woke up a bit late (6.00am). Then by the time we were ready, the clock was ticking 7.00am. But somehow, I didn't feel like hurrying; although the thought of returning on the same day was inside the cerebellum.

As we hit the Marathahalli ring road, noticed sparse traffic, so the places started flowing by at a rapid pace, Belandur - Aghara - Silk Board - EC Flyover - Hosur. And then we were on the real highway. I kept a lazy pace of 60 to 70 kph, never exceeding 80, never going below 60; enjoying the twisty highway running between hills & hillocks, sometimes sharing a chat or two with my companion. In no time, the miles clocked away. We had planned to delay the first halt, so we stopped at a hp Bunk some 20kms before Krishnagiri with a Southern restaurant attached to it. Filled our stomach with masala dosa, tanked up the bike & we were back on track again with renewed vigour.

Next cross was the Krishnagiri Toll Gate, then we took the Chennai Road (NH46) & rode straight until after crossing some 40 odd kms, we hit another Toll Gate. Took the underpass a few kms up the road & from there-on, it was country roads for some 22 kms. But, beautiful roads !!

We stopped at the base of the mountain for our first snap. Then covered the 12 hairpin bends one after the another, until we gleaming at a bright waterbody on the top of the mountain. There's this beautiful lake surrounded by a lush green nature park, where we spent some 3 hours chatting away the exhaustion. Then it was time to have lunch in a local restaurant & we headed back for home.

Home sweet home came in at 6.30pm, with some traffic riding through the Hosur road, then Belandur Jn. At the end of the day, we simply couldn't but admire the great roads, that left us totally fit without a single body ache.

      Snaps from Yelagiri Ride ....

      1. Yelagiri Hills ascent road starts here.

      2. The lush green plains of Tamilnadu pose a starking contrast to the red soil dryness of the average Karnataka Plains.

      3. Halt on the 12th Hair-pin bend for a few snaps.

      4. The Iron Horse makes an adamant stance atop the clouds.

      5. The picturesque lake atop the mountains. You can see tourists paddle-boating in the waters.

      6. The blossoms inside the nature park.
