SPITI – my 2nd attempt to do it. First one failed because of some unforgettable reasons
So, HERE WE COME AGAIN !! 4 Riders: Me (Classic 500cc) Sandy Singh (Old Trusted friend – Bullet Standard) Virendra Soni (new TBTS) Rolf a.k.a. Sutirth Sanyal (Electra 5S) Day 1 (Thursday – 24th March 2011)Plan was to start around 10AM as both Sandy & Rolf work in night shifts & they want to have some sleep before they start on the mammoth ride. However, Sandy Singh started calling around 7AM or so with comments like “kab aaoge yaar, samaan pack hai mera, jaldi karo”. We 2 (I & Soni) had to start from Noida & supposed to meet rest of the folks at Karnal Byepass. But, Sandy Singh ko Chain kahan tha Then, we thought to give him a call & ask them to proceed & we can anyways catch them on NH1 somewhere. Sandy Singh turned a HAPPY Singh after that call, as now he can atleast start. As soon as we 2 (Soni & I) started on NH24 – there was a horrible jam & those who travel frequently on NH24 can assume how crowd can look at you with all eyes wide open (when they see 2 bikers, with full luggage, heavily geared up). Those anxious eyes !! Got some respite from Jam after we entered Delhi – then, a mast wali smooth ride after that. Met Rolf & Sandy near Murthal. Suggested them to have lunch @ Jhilmil Complex, Karnal & all agreed. Due to mid-week & day time, we reached Jhilmil within no time. Had a delicious lunch there, saw the toss of India-Australia Match. Aussies started batting & then, we decided to touch hills- before INDIA starts their innings. Second meeting point fixed – below the flyover on the start of Ambala-CHD highway. There was a rush to see Indian batting before we make a halt for the day, so we pushed hard. Had some food @ McDonalds in Jabli. I reached Barog & finalized a room before the rest of 3 caught me. Chachu Ka Dhaba – 700/- for 2 rooms (pretty nice for bikers, very good food just downstairs – with TV). Watched Indians beating Aussies & Yuvi performed like a true sportsman. What a match !! Day 1 ended with some beers, an Indian win & 350 kms done on odometer. |

Day 2 (Friday – 25th March 2011)
Started from Barog around 9AM (quite late though), want to meet Khemchand (Royal Enfield Mechanic @ Taradevi & a good friend as well). Got tank up at Solan & then, met Khemchand @ Taradevi RE Showroom. Journey was very good till this point, as expected. Plan was to reach Kalpa by evening. However, all plans went haywire, thanks to tacky road from Shimla to Narkanda. Want to appeal this in public interest: stop taking that route until they make it drivable. 3 hours of latke-jhatke, ass breaking road – our bikes virtually bawled. Had some food @ Narkanda, which was okish. Roads after Narkanda are really a bliss, we reached Rampur within no time. Had a tea, just next to river Satluj. However, by that time – we realized it won’t be easy to hit Kalpa – so, we decided to take a halt at Tapri. Reached Tapri around 6:30 PM, booked rooms @ Tapri Rest House. Had dinner at roadside dhaba (another okish types; 40/- a thali with unlimited top ups of Daal, Kadhi, Rice, Roti). Slept around 11 PM with the sound of river, just next to rest house. One major thing we noticed this day – absence of infamous slush around Tapri J Day 2 – 250 kms. |
