You can keep to NH2 from Calcutta to Varanasi. From Varanasi you can move onto Lucknow. Or you can stick to NH 2 till Allahabad. And from the Allahabad bye pass you can turn right towards Lucknow via Rai Bareilly. But these roads are not safe after dark.

After Lucknow, you can go to Delhi via bareilly which is a crowded, two lane road; or you can stick to four laners by coming back towards the NH2, ie Lucknow to Kanpur and then kanpur to delhi.
