Deras Dam (Orissa)

Starting time – 6:30 A.M. Odometer reading – 0 KM

• Rohit – Royal Enfield Thunderbird
• Deepak – Yamaha R-15

Passion to Ride and Explore is what Drives BULLZzz around and that’s exactly what led me to get up at 5:30 AM in the morning. For all those late latifs out there with whom I share a common interest of sleeping away to glory will understand how difficult of a task it is to get up so early in the morning, but some Wise Crack once said “No Pain No Gain” and so I finally got up.



I reached Infosys Gate No 1 at about 6:30 AM and to my dismay I found absolutely nobody there, so I carefully parked my BULL (Thunderbird) and called Deepak, after about 3 or 4 Rings on his cell I saw Deepak appear out of the slightly foggy ambience, a typical hero type entry on his mean machine (R-15) but as he came closer and closer a hint of concern and seriousness was becoming very evident on his face I immediately sensed that something was wrong and quickly started scanning his bike, but I could not find anything wrong. After Deepak was done parking his bike he showed me a cracked spot on his Front Left Cowl and a big scratched patch on it, adding to our worry was the Horn which had stopped functioning. And so with a heavy heart Deepak finally decided leave his Anarkali behind and Parked the Devil inside Infosys Premises. With the emotions sinking in we started to call everybody else, soon Ranjan came then Soumya ensued. After realizing the fact that this will be the strength of the group for the day we started off towards our destination for the day Deras Dam.





With Deepak behind me on my BULL, I started off cruising at around Forty to Fifty Km/Hr soon realizing that we were left far behind by our fellow bikers, quickly making me realize that it was not Brute force of the Thunderbird that was needed for the day but just crude speed. Soon after the slight alteration in my Driving Mindset, we (Me and Deepak) quickly caught up with Ranjan and Sowmya and started following the road towards the Dam. Seeing Soumya and Ranjan just cruise on that rough road confirmed that they excelled in the art people know as Driving. I unlike them was very new to such Roads and was finding it rather difficult to drive.

We were soon welcomed by single-lane metallic road as the rough Kaccha road momentarily ceased to exist making the drive much easier. After a few minutes stop near Nandan Kanan for a cup of Tea and a discourse on Bikes (But Of course) we carried on with the journey. Since the roads after a small rough patch were good we switched from Cruiser mode to the Hardcore Rider as our BULLZzz stud Sunil likes to put it. Soon we were going at around 80 KM/Hr and after about 10 – 15 minutes of hardcore biking we took a right turn and entered a village. The road inside the village was quite muddy, narrow and without any speed breakers making the road extremely prone to accidents thus making us very cautious. Soon we were welcomed by a sign pointing left clearly suggesting the itinerary for reaching the Dam. It took us some 10 odd minutes to reach Deras once we were out of the Village.

After parking the bikes in a Haphazard manner I started to move on. After having a small Discourse with the Guard or Security Soumya splurged out some cash and handed it over to the Guard. After a while I could see Soumya taking out his mighty Sony Cybershot H9 for some shots of our Lovely Ladies in Red flaunting their curvaceous bods no speculations people I am referring to our bikes over here. So after some lovely shotzzz of our Ladies (Bikes) we started moving towards the Dam.









The Dam boasts off a scenic locale accompanied by a vividly colorful and lively ambience. To our astonishment we could see the Dam brimming with water which actually was a lovely surprise. Soumya Our photographer for the day quickly took out his camera and started clicking following a very professional approach using the Grid feature available on his Cam meanwhile I could see Ranjan cursing his Canon A720 IS for not having a similar feature; I on the other hand was happy clicking shotzzz using my nifty Nikon Coolpix S7c. With some breathtaking pics for our budding Orkut profile we trekked around the dam and made our way to a small guest house on top of a Hillock just in the vicinity of the Dam. We were immediately spellbounded by the breathtaking view from the top of the Hillock; with a sought of an immediate reaction we took out our cams to satiate the Shutterbug inside us. After reaching atop of a elevated hut just beside the guest house I was dumbstruck by the beauty of the place which led me to cogitate and conclude that GOD is really creative. With the cool breezes gushing past me and being amidst beautiful scenic locale I could not help but start introspecting and retrospections ensued. Strange effects nature has on you, it mentally transports you to a totally different place. With those soulful moments with nature over I started looking for my fellow riders who were still busy clicking away to glory. Soon they joined me atop the elevated Hut. After a discourse on typical Guys topics, we made our way down the hillock towards the Dam.





On the way down we deduced that since we had a lot of time at our disposal we could visit Nandan Kanan enroute our way back to Infosys. And with the next destination decided we were faced with the mammoth task of gratifying our Pangs of Hunger (famously put by Sunil) as we were famished. With absolutely nothing in the vicinity to gobble down to temporarily subside our Famished Temperament we decided to move on.





On the way back to Nandan Kanan I started exuding the confidence of a seasoned rider as now, I was familiar with the road and what exactly lay ahead of me. With my bull demanding me to unleash its full power, I floored the throttle and let my bull almost roar like a Lion. With the throttle fully floored I began to truly appreciate the 350cc engine that a Royal Enfield boasts of royally. Totally bowled over by the brute power of the bull I failed to notice our arrival at Nandan Kanan.



After gratifying our hunger we went inside Nandan Kanan. If I go about chalking down our experience in Nandan Kanan I would have to sit here for the whole night. So not going ahead with penning down those memoirs, I will continue and try chalking down the culminating stages of our trip.



With Nandan Kanan completely captured inside our nifty Cameras we began our way back to Infosys, on the way stopping only for lunch. On reaching Patia Chowk we bid adieu to each other and went our separate ways. I left Deepak at Infosys Gate no 1 and made way to my Room.

With the beauty and vividly colorful ambience of Deras still lingering at the back of mind I started to make arrangements to fall flat on my bed. As I lay there on my bed contemplating I could not fail to realize that the trip had left its mark on me that was not going to fade away quickly. This trip will always be close to my heart as this being my Numero-Uno trip with BULLZzz.

My geography maybe poor, but only after reading Nandan Kanan I figured that this was happening in Orissa. It would be nice if you could give reference points of distances from major landmarks which will give us an idea to people who are not from the East.

Thanks for sharing. Quite a few guys touring in the east these days and sharing. Good to see the passion spreading.
