Wanted to post this in Help thread, but then thought that this could be converted into a Fairing discussion....

Guys i wanted to know how to make a Fairing?

I read about the fiberglass one, totally confused jumped here

I think a lot of xbhp-ians will be eager to know about it

Can anyone throw some projector lights on this topic?

you would need to make a design in wood or Plaster, whichever you are comfortable in. Then you need to make a die off the design. This will be where the fibre mixture would be put in to take the shape off.

You need three main things for the fairing - fibre, resin and hardener. A correct mixture of all three will give you a strong but light fairing, otherwise its just gonna be hard like rock.

The die in which the fibre fairing has to be made, has to be smooth, and layered with french chalk, and also allowances have to be made for grinding and rubbing in areas like intakes slots, indicator mounts, headlight mounts etc.

The right thickness of fibre and resin and chalk mixed together with the hardener, and evenly spread would take the inner lining of the die and once hardened would make the base of your fairing.

then you need putty to fill up the gaps, Sandpaper or hand grinder to shape the entire thing. Base coat and then paint it up.

Honest suggestion - design the fairing after meeting some of the people who supply the "DHOOM" type of fairing for bikes, and maybe they might make the design you want, provided you get the die.

I know die is a hard word here, mould is actually more like it. Can be made in POP also if you know the design and can work with it.

but i want to give it a try this summer, rather than rushing to collect information in summers, i thought to collect all info and start early

I want to make a fairing for P220
it already has a semi-fairing, i would like to make it FUll n Bigger...

I read that the material that the garden exhibition ppl use to stick in their sticks can also be used to make a model?[ the green colored moss]

and also wanted to know about cooling the engine
engine is air cooled, how can i enhance the cooling
can a bigger oil cooler be fixed?

My idea was to draw small pipes[vents] from, fairing

i cant say about that moss like thing because i worked with moulding long time back. What you basically need in your fairing is a scoop like option, that helps direct the air over the engine, like the inner fairing of the R15, or the fins on the FZ-S. That will help improve the cooling. Also the air must have a exit.

i want my bike to be unique, and i want to learn every aspect of it coz i dont want to waste my time and hard work when i will do it

Well, to be frank, i dont know how to make a fairing!!! But i sure know, how not to make a bad looking fairing.

Engine cooling is a problem, but that does not stop you from rippin your babe. I remember on my last service, the bajaj guy has to fill in the CO by turning off the bike for some time and then firing it up again. waiting for it to cool. Well, you will learn to ignore that.

HERE IS THE CATCH.. Make very sure, you run a secure frame under your fairing and make sure the design bulges out of the current half fairing and not just slide flat without any bevel on it.

This will help increase the air flow within. Make sure the frame is well fitted on the required areas.

Another problem other than heating, that you will face is the distance between the radiator and the front wheel suspension distance. As the frame will run under the radiator (guess it will also be welded to the radiator), so after that no hard stoppies and no ditches for your bike. if you do you will see a mark on the front guard with a nice "tock" sound.

Awesome road presence, some even wonder what bike it is.
You will have a real good feel after you get down off the bike and look at it... keep a cam handy!!

MOST IMPORTANTLY:
Get your fairing well designed, but never over design. THIS decides everything. For me, i designed it myself and carved it out with the sticker guy to create the theme... still have to find time to paint it.
