I use Debian Sid(apt-pinned) and Ubuntu 8.0.4.1 Hardy most of the time.I have shifted to GNU/Linux almost 100% for many years(7 years).

I may help you my best if you got any doubt with Desktop GNU/Linux.dont hesitate to ask

Here is my Gnome 2.22.3 on Hardy:

^ yes ,the desktop got lot of folders and stuffs.but I used a "trick"("

") to skip them
