A bigger , less teeth sprocket and a lean mix
= more Mileage [i doubt 40+ in city ,highway is sure above 40 on stock] top of 140+ sluggish acceleration, hot engine.....

Comparitivly ZMA-R is a more reliable and maintenance free bike but
if you are looking for a bike with mileage 45-50 please dont go for ZMA-R.
You will get a mileage around 45 only in highways and that too only if you ride very sanely . For normal cases (mixed riding) you can expect 35 in city
and if you are ripping on highways it can even drop to 32-30 .

For your purpose and needs i suggest Suzuki Gs150 or Honda unicorn or Cbz Extreme . (Yamaha Fz is also one of the most reliable bike you can get but it may not always give the mileage you expected ) .
All the above three bike can satisify your crteria both in mileage and relability . I can vouch for that as my freinds are owning them for years.
so ask your freind to test drive all the three and find out which one he feels best for him in all departments including looks.

so within your budget(85 K max) my suggestions are (in prority order)

1. Gs 150 , HH CBZ Extreme , Honda Unicorn - ALL three will give him required mileage and will be relaible and it will cost only around 68 so he can use the rest of the money for getting riding gears or save it for other uses.

2. Yamaha FZ - Is one of the most relaible bike out here . really an enginnering excellence (expect for the under powered mill and speed consoles) . - This is a relaly good choice if you are ready to sacrifise
a little bit on the mileage side. It will cost around 72 K only(max).

3. Karizma - R - This is a comfortable , relaxed ,relaible , maintaince free bike and really powerfull and never feels sluggish for your freind. he will be thrilled on the low end torque and will be enjoying the performance every time he ride this.Even after years it will serve you without any trouble and will give you peace of mind and later after 3-4 years you will have a good resale value due to HH brand. If you are in to touring or highway rides your love with the bike willl increase day by reach an inseperable state. It is so much comfortable on touring and powerfull . any but on the mileage side he has to compensate for the performance. - This also falls in your budget but you have to spend your entire amount to get this bike leaving an empty pocket for riding gears and other expences.

4. P 220 - This also falls in your budget . In terms of performance nothnig beat this (within your budget). Got really really good projector headlights that inspire confidence to ride the bike at night even on unknown roads.
Mileage will be better than Karizma if you ride sanly . In terms of performace this is the best your money can buy . All you have to do is take care of the ride more , spend more time in checking/maintaining the bike ,Spend time in maintaining a good contact/realtionship in PBK , put some extra efforts in ensuring that PBK guys are replacing/solving your problem ,some times shoot a mail to bajaj to bully the PBK guys and get the work done . But if you have that much pataince the P220 is will pay you back in double , it is capble of erasing all these memmeries from your memeory once it is ridden with its brutal power and mind trilling top end .

But i suggest you to take any one of the 150 cc s lised above for your freind. 150 cc is the best suited for his requirement.

^^^Very nice analysis & detailed info....Thank you.

Choosing FZ need to sacrifice Power as well as Mileage ...which @TS 's friends want most.

HMSI's Unicorn is the most perfect in this scenario.

HH,honda and even suzuki bikes are comparatively maintainence free...As for the mileage factor, moving to higher segment makes no sense...The hunk, unicorn,GS are relatively good in the 150cc space when it comes to maintaining a perfect balance between performance and FE...ask him to have TR and then decide

If your friend goes for either the uni or the Xtreme tell him to tear the warranty card immediately on delivery and strongly advise him not to set foot in the SC ever again then only i can say the hondas are reliable.
