  • Additional charges levied for swiping your card is wrong

    Hi guys,

Yesterday I had gone to complete the formalities for booking my R15 from a large Yamaha dealer in Bangalore. I offered to swipe my card for the downpayment for which they said that they would charge the mandatory 2% surcharge. I refused to pay this as I knew that this is a charge which has to be borne by the dealer & it is taken into account as part of the total cost of the product I am buying (in this case a bike). They were telling me that this is a charge levied by the bank for swiping (which is true). I told them that this is not my expense & that I could bring proof if they wanted. Next they tried convincing me by saying, its only 2% its just a small amount. I said fine, I'll swipe my card and since its such an inconsequential amount (according to them) why dont they pay the surcharge for me. After refusing to budge on this, they contacted someone & finally agreed to let me swipe my card without the charge.

Booking done, my friend & I went to pick up a helmet from J.C Road. He found a GP One & wanted to pay for it by card. Same story again, we told him boss, its your expense not mine. He swiped it without asking again.

Point is, fellow bikers, you should never allow any trader to charge you this 2%. They are being greedy & want to maintain their same margins, so they pass on the costs to you. Next time you swipe your card make sure that you dont get cheated. I am attaching an article from Business Line which appeared a couple of months ago. Hope this helps you guys. Cheers !

Exactly ^^^.. when I went to buy a speaker set, and offered my card to charge the amount, the shopkeeper said there would be a Rs. 50 charge on it, when I said, I buy lots of things using my card, and I never had to pay any charges, the shopkeeper replied... the stores where you have made purchases usually have better deals from banks for the volume of transactions, but as he doesn't usually get card payment he can't afford to waive off this charge... and me being a bigger miser (than the shopkeeper).. I rushed to ATM to get cash..

Another time - I had been charged 10% for petrol fill (the only time I used card to make payment at fuel station), which I didn't had a clue of until I got my transaction statement.. I thought of howling at bank on how could they let charge that amount, for which I never signed anything?? and, maybe goto the fuel station... but then thought.. this overall procedure will cost me more than what charged.. so dropped this idea, and kept a note for future..

You could first enquire from the merchant/ the shopkeeper if there's on the transaction or not.. if yes, then don't proceed with the transaction or, turn it into a verbal fight citing this news..

If somehow you are charged, you might try writing to your bank..

It is true that people who don't get much business via cards don't get good deals from the banks. I always tried to confront such merchants that it is their expense but didn't know that it is against the agreement. Thanks for this information.

Some instances when things didn't really work out I managed to get the 2% thing down to .5% & .75%.

I even came across some shops who charge for Debit Cards and nothing for Credit Cards

It is their expense, no doubt. But the 'inside' reason for it is most of them make sales which they do not declare in their tax statements. Card transactions cannot be undeclared&hence they charge the 2%.

As for petrol bunks, 2.5% is the standard surcharge. However, many credit cards are offering no fuel surcharge facilities. It does come in the statement, however it is reimbursed in the subsequent month!

Youre welcome guys. Spread the message is all I can say.

@R15Rocks - Youre right about most of the credit cards not charging this amount for swiping at petrol pumps. I used to receive a lot of sales calls (more than 2 -3 a day) from credit card companies last year offering new cards & all of them had this facility.

At the end of the day its a matter of whether the shopkeeper is willing to take a slight hit on his margins or whether he thinks he can pull a fast one on you.

Well.. In my case, when I tried to use my cc to pay for my card's downpayment, the ICICI bank call center employee at the other end confirmed that for certain types of transactions they do not force the merchant to bear the additional cost.

In general you end up paying the bank fees when you are buying something with maximum discount from a shop.. Mostly I have noticed that if you are paying the mrp or if you are not getting any additional discounts, the dealers absorb the credit card surchage.

Another thing to note is that with most retailers you can ask for a cash discount if you do not get any additional surcharge for using a credit card. This does not work with restaurants or hotels, though..

If you book railway tickets using credit card, then also you will need to pay the credit card processing surchage. Same is the case with many petrol pump and credit card combination, but if you are using your card to fill petrol, then you can find a petrol pump in most areas which will not levy a surcharge for credit card transactions for a given bank's credit card.

Bajaj dealers also told me the same thing when I went to book my P220. I asked them about payment using Debit card just for info. I made the payment by DD later. Thanks for this Neil.

Mates, you are partially true on that. it is right that the Shopkeeper or the merchant at times charge an additinal 2% which is a bit unjustified, but it is also true that the Merchant has to shell out some % for the swipe. Now, when his profit is as little as 3-4% as in the case of a Automobile dealer, it is practically impossible for him to shell out 50% of his profit for your swipe to the bank.
so, they are kind of justified in asking for an additinal 2%, but for some merchant who is making a good profit as in the case of Garments and all, I think it should not happen.
                              Cheers!
