ah, I won't be in town that time probably... though in that case you could use my bike if you can't find anything else (classic pulsar 180 - still runs good, and took me to Shimla effortlessly)

There are a few bike rental guys in karol bagh, you will have to check with them, but they mainly keep bullets, and give em to foreigners only. You might have to keep your passport or some money as security with them for the bike.

Delhi - Ladakh trip: Bike hire

I'm contemplating a bike trip from Delhi to Leh in July, as part of a larger group. My problem is that I don't think that my FZ16 is the most suitable bike for such a trip. I was therefore thinking of hiring a bike in Delhi.

As usual, the first suggestion I received was a Bullet. But I'm reluctant because of the high probability of mechanical troubles. Also, I'm not used to the right side gear shift of older bullets which are the most likely hire bikes that one would find.

I think a Karizma is better for this job since it's powerful and long legged and won't suffer too much at high altitudes as would a smaller engined bike. The argument I heard against the Karizma is that it would be difficult to find mechanics along the route. That may be true but I think it's far less likely to breakdown than a Bullet.

I would appreciate both opinions as well as info on hiring bikes in Delhi (Bullets and Karizmas).

I would strongly suggest you not to hire a bike if you have a bike of your own. ANY 150cc+ does Leh easily. Yes you heard me right, Easily! Your fz-16 may not be the best bike to do Leh, but there nothing such as "it is not suitable". Infact i have taken the fz-16 offroading a couple of times and I did not find it bad at all.

Hired bikes have a strong probability of dying down on you and giving you multiple issues enroute. For a destination like Leh, I would recommend riding a bike that you are familiar with, and not some rented machine!

I completely agree with you on the reliability of hired bikes. But one of my concerns regarding the suitability of my FZ is whether is can keep up with the group, which would normally be mostly bullets, on both the plains and the hills. I think that on the plains, if the speeds are below 90, then it should be no trouble at all. But once in the hills, with rising altitude, I'm afraid the loss of power will handicap the FZ much more than a Bullet. I could carry a set of replacement sprockets to reduce gearing once I reach the hills but I'm not sure that's practical.

Don't worry so much about the FZ's ability to catch up with the Bulls. Bulls are not rockets and the Fuzzy is no donkey cart.

The FZ has very good low & mid range, great handling, lighter to maneuvor. A good air bucket with a good air filter. All this adds up to give you a handsome bike to ride on trails. Don't worry so much and go ahead on your bike.

Only worry would be how you'd carry your luggage. No tank bag & no saddle bags. Have to tie up things on rear seat.

I must admit that I find the FZ a very comfortable bike to ride long distances. I've done a 300 km stretch with no back aches or sore bums. Also a great handling bike.

One more thing that concerns me is the tyres. The FZ tyres are great on asphalt but not so on gravel and loose surfaces like I imagine many roads on the hills to be. Ideally I would like to fit a more dual purpose studded tyre for the trip but the odd sized standard tyres are difficult to replace with different types.

As for the bodywork, mine are in mint condition and I don't want to damage them. I'll probably try looking for a set of used/slightly damaged ones that I could use just for the trip. Then I wouldn't have to worry about tieing down bags to the seat or the tank.
